Fly Fishing on the Rifle River: A Perfect Day of Relaxation
Переглядів 136Місяць тому
Join me on the Rifle River for a day of fly fishing that was truly good for the soul. It was one of those perfect, warm days where I floated down the river in my canoe, wet wading, casting a line, and catching a handful of small trout along the way. More than the catch, it was about soaking in the peacefulness, getting some 'water time,' and clearing my head. Even if you weren't with me, I hope...

I’m thinking of sacrificing my sewing machine 🤔
Excellent review, as always! Thank you, David! I just ordered a BVK SD lll+ for a TFO AXiom 2x: 9ft 10wt rod for saltwater fly fishing in SW Florida.. O'Neill's Fly Fishing in Delaware has them on sale right now for 50% off!
It sounds like you scored a great setup! Catch you later 😎🐟🎣
I soak mine in hand soap overnight then rinse clean in the morning. The speed and slickness can't be matched. i would have some concerns what that product may do to the chemical structure of the line itself.
I'm going to try the soap over night cleaning. I could see how it could soften and lift the dirt off. In my previous life, (when I had a job) I was a plastics engineer. The cleaning additives in armor all are chemically the same as what is used making fly line
Nice video bud, I've always wanted to fly fish. Just got back a couple weeks ago from salmon fishing. I'm down state
Sorry about the delay getting back with you. Salmon fishing on a small river like the PM is a hoot. You get to fight the fish, current and all the woody debris. Tight lines 🐟
Oh my goodness, I felt that fish off feeling before.
Utter disappointment 😥😥😥

Sally Fields head Cement. 😂Freudian slip 🤦♂️✝️📿🧎
LOL 🐟🐟🎣
Thanks - nice reviews. I am an angler and fish biologist and find myself trying to spot fish in low light (Western Washington in November). For me, light amber/yellow gives the best contrast. I don't want to spend a lot because they are easy to lose, but I also wear glasses so I need fit-overs. My go to is: Eagle Eyes Fit-Overs - currently $41.96; my recommendation for those who don't need fit-overs is Flying Fisherman Buchanan rectangular for $23. Just as good visually. They seem to only come in women's but the fish don't care. Like other plastic lenses they scratch easily
Thank you for the info, I get lots of requests to do a review of fit-overs. I might have to put that on the "to Do" list. 🎣🐟😎😎
@@GuideRecommended Great - looking forward to it. The selection seems slim.
Let me know when you're in the Muskegon area and I am there.
Thanks for the invite 🐟🐟
Looks like snagging.
I need to get one in the net.
San Juan Werman size 8, won’t work
Okay, 👍
How do you like your NuCanoe Frontier 12 kayak? I've been considering purchasing a 12' version of a NuCanoe w/casting stability bar or another brand of kayak. Also, what are your thoughts about having a kayak powered by pedals and line management? I live in SW Florida and saw Joe Mahler, a SW Florida Fly Fishing legend, fishing from a NuCanoe Frontier 12 kayak w/casting stability bar on UA-cam. Keep the great videos coming! Thank you, David!
The Frontier 12 has been bulletproof for me. Very seldom do I cast from it through. I'm mostly in shallow rivers so I pull over and wade to fishing spots. I do paddle about 70% of the time standing in order to look for fish. I like fishing in some of the less popular small rivers so this canoe is perfect.
@@GuideRecommended, thank you, DAVID!
Matching your hat color to the lens colors was a nice touch. Very tasteful and subtle.
It wasn't planned, just random hat selection. Tight Lines!!! 🐟😎🎣
i will be up there Saturday through Monday. going there and the Betsie. thanks for the video. gives good confidence.
Tight lines - 🐟🐟😎🎣
These are actually some of my favorite glasses, but i have to buy 2-3 time a year, because the lenses just aren't durable. Once i get even the tiniest scratch in the main field of view, theyre done for me. I love the color of the brown/chartreuse lenses. I prefer my glass costas for lens durability, but the frames seem to be a major weak point for me.
I haven't experienced durability issues, but I have so many sunglasses the KastKings do get set to the side quite a bit. Great comment I appreciate the information.
I have been a dedicated Costa fan using only their 580 glass in green mirror for very bright days. However, my FAVORITE go-to is their COPPER (non mirrored) for contrast and colour enhancement...the pop.. In the Maui Jims, what are the main differences between the Bronze & Rose colours? I am a long haul driver, so glasses are worn for HOURS in varying light
I'm surprised you don't like the gray tints more. Grays usually hve the best protection in harsh light. (the color does get muted with gray) You are experiencing some harsh sunlight conditions on the road. I absolutely love the copper/bronze tint, mostly because the best fishing is in lower light conditions. (early morning and later afternoon) If you get a chance read up on VLT (visual light transmission) It is a measurement of how much light passes through the lenses.
Nice!!! Looks like your doing fantastic hooking up with big black streamers in their faces. Nicely done, nicely done! Missed the Pere Marquette this year, I won't miss it next early Fall. Ill have to look you up next Sept. I need to rent a kayak next year. I usually wade it, gets quite limited.
There are a couple places in town that rent kayaks. The PM is so beautiful, getting a Salmon on the line is a bonus. Tight lines 🐟🐟😎
What on earth?? Is the tippet breaking? 10 pounds is really thin for salmon... Better luck next time
I should have a 15 pound tippet. I knew better, but this was a prove out trip for more fishing in the next few weeks. Thanks 👍
Great video David and thanks for sharing. I always wanted to go to the PM but never had anyone to go with me. Dont know how I missed your invite but I would of tried to go along. Sorry but looks like you had a good time. Enjoyed your hook ups. Well maybe next year look me up. Tight lines and continue what you do I enjoyed it. Thanks.

@@GuideRecommended Thanks Dave. That is the crazy part I have been a subscriber for a good while maybe over a year or so and thought I was on the newsletter but did it again. Dont know how I missed it but it would of been fun. Where are you located? I am in Pa. do you ever come this way to western Pa. Thanks again and tight lines
Great video are you buy indian bridge?
Hi Mike, I'm not sure if it is called the Indian bridge, but it is the RR bridge over the river.
Beautiful river and always a great place to spend time fishing. Just got back Saturday and my luck was similar..... low, clear water with fish spread out and spooky. Hooked several, landed none. I switch to my 5WT one evening and went after they trout below the salmon. I caught two very nice Brown Trout just as the sun dropped behind the trees. Take Care
A good call switching to the 5wt. I saw so many browns in the dark water behind the gravel. The PM is a special place. 🐟🎣
Here's the link to my Fishy Friday Newsletter 👉👉 how2flyfish.com/
That is amazing. I'll have to check it out
The Smith Hooksets are AWESOME!!
Hey you are in my neck of the woods!
I love fishing on the PM, you've got to get on the river! The salmon are just starting to move in! 🐟

that looks like fun, wow.
I've got to get some of them in a net.....oh I forgot my net. 😂😂🐟
nice water. how can I find out how to get on the river to catch one of those big salmon.
I talk about the details in my Fishy Friday newsletter. Heck I invite folks to come along with me!
Beautiful water, beautiful surroundings, lots of big fish, yeah, you are living the dream.
I'm always looking for folks to go with me!! 😎🐟
@@GuideRecommended I am too old, too crippled up, and too far away. The best I can do is watch you live the dream. Thanks for the offer, and best of luck to you.
Smith isn't willing to give an honest answer as to where their sunglasses are manufactured. There's only one reason why. They know that $200 is a little "hefty" for their chi-com built products.
I'm going to look at the box mine came in. From memory they make sunglasses in Utah, Italy and China.
I have had the exact same vise, with the bobbin rest for years. I bought mine new, when they were 112.00 dollars, and it is just as good today as it was when I bought it. Thanks for the great videos, David.
The Peak Rotary is a great vise. A buy once and use for a lifetime vise. Tight lines, catch you later! 🐟
I know this is an old video from seven months ago, but I have a quick question. I want to make an eight week fly rod for catfish how do I know what size or millimeter rod carbon fiber rods I will need.
Fly rod blanks are sold with the weight described. Shop for an 8 weight. Tight Lines! 🐟
thinking of getting a 4w foundation. would it be wise to get a 5w for trout 14-20"? or could a 4w handle it? Thanks
Thanks for the note. Either a 4wt or 5wt should handle 14 to 20 inch trout. I'd lean more toward the 5wt though. The Foundation is a "fast action" fly rod, so you might want to overline it. Tight lines, catch you later! 🐟
When was this!? I was just there!? 9-9-24
I posted it from the river an hour ago. Floating M37 to Green Cottage. Catch you later 🐟🐟🎣
Great video! Which one of these glasses has the best hat compatibility fit woudl you say? I often have trouble finding a pair of inexpensive glasses to fun on the sides of my head with a hat.
The Fishoholics and Flying Fishermen have a smaller frame that should work with a hat. Catch you later! 😎😎
High N Dry has a relatively new product called Paste Floatant that works well to help with keeping flies and the tips of fly lines and leader butts floating. As it's name suggests it's a clear silicone paste.
Thanks, I'll have to check it out. One of my guide buddies love's frog fanny. I'll get some of both and try it out! 🐟😎
While not budget at double the price limit here of $99, if anyone is looking for a premium fishing sunglass at a ridiculously good price, go to your local Costco and get a pair of Costa sunglasses at more than half off. My Costas have the best polarized lenses for fishing of any sunglasses I’ve used, they are very comfortable, come with a sturdy case, and the anti-scratch coating on them is more durable than any other sunglasses I have owned except a pair of Ray Bans that had glass lenses. The most effective anti-scratch coatings are those on glass lenses, but that pair of Ray Bans I used to own was so heavy that it became uncomfortable to wear after about half an hour.
Costa makes amazing sunnies!!! Great tip about going to Costco! 😎😎🐟
Good video: I have been using the micro swivel for years, not only when casting the large poppers and streamers but also, I use them when fishing smaller flies and poppers; they are a must, just as the tippet is essential to cut down on knot tying. Thanks for sharing
With poppers and grasshoppers swivels are the best. I've been trialing them with my euro-nymphing rig as well. Thanks!🐟
David, that is a double thumbs up from me.
A perfect day fishing.
What a beautiful river. You are right, everyone needs a little down time and alone time. It is good for the soul and helps make the needed repairs and gets us ready to face the world again. I wish I was up there on that river, easing my way down, in no hurry, catching a fish now and then. You are living the dream, David. Thanks for my virtual tour of Rifle River. All of the best to you.
Thanks for the comment, an amazing float down the river. No worries, beautiful weather and a handful of fish. Truly a blessing to be outside!!! Catch you later! David
Thanks for the reminder to get out and fish. Nice video😊
Thanks Dale, packing up now for a little float tomorrow. 🎣 😎
Where can you find it
I used to make those. I stopped a couple years ago. 🐟🎣
how can I find some clip on fishing glasses???
Ugh.. sorry I've never really looked for them. 😎🐟
Great review! THANK YOU! I've never owned a pair of polarized. Just a well put together video. :) Now to pick between amber and gray. Eh? At these price point one of each!
Thanks for the comment. If you've never used polarized sunnies fishing, you should try some. Even if you just borrowed them while fishing. Tight lines 😎
I bought today moui jim H449-01HCL HUELO 24 Iam Rajesh in India
Good deal 😎. Those are fantastic sunglasses.
Bought the fishoholics, and they started cracking on 3rd trip out. Very cheap brittle plastic...shame they did look good
Ugh...I would contact the folks at Fishoholic. They have always been very responsive when I asked questions. 😎
This vise is an amazing vise especially for the money. I started tying on this vise 25 years ago and still have it. Granted I currently tie in a regal revolution the last few years. I will always go back and tie on my peak.
Regal makes good vises, I tied with their traveler a couple years ago. The Peak is a solid value packed vise. I'm tying up salmon flies now. 🐟🐟
Great video! One thing that you did not mention is warranty information. Also, customer service if you ever had to contact them. Thanks again for the great video!
Great point, Costa has been very responsive.
David, I like all the recommendations you have made on products you find value in. Thanks again
Thanks for the comment. Catch you later. 🐟🐟🐟

Thanks for the video. I think I’ll go with the smiths. The costas make everything look like you’re wearing sunglasses, while the smiths appear to keep things more true to their natural color. ChromaPop for the win.
I do love the Chromapop. More natural colors. I've been playing with the Hooksets from Smith and I really really like them. I'm thinking they're my new favorites. Tight lines!
@@GuideRecommended Unfortunately I actually got a pair of Costa 580g Permits today in mirror blue. They’re great, I just had my mind set on the Smith’s. However, couldn’t find a store that carries Smith Optics for the life of me, and this was a purchase I really didn’t want to make over the internet! The hooksets are actually the pair I had settled on prior to realizing I can’t get them locally.
