Raising Junior Episode 19 - Refuribishing a rear axle and differential
In episode 19 we start the assembly of the mechanical parts of the car. We started off with the rear axle. We took the casing apart, cleaned all the exterior and interior components and gave them a fresh coat of paint. The tired old brakes weren't good enought so we repaced the discs and wheel cylinder pistons.
The rear axle s the original 1300 so unfortunatly it doesn't have a limted slip differential. The planet and pinion gear were in great shape so we didn't feel the need to replace them

    It has been over 25 years since I've done this sort of thing, I have done rotisserie restorations of 750 series Alfas and three Jaguar XK-Es. Now I am looking at a 1970 GTV, a straight and complete but very rusty car that needs everything. I am hoping to get it for under $2,000, I know parts alone will run well over $15,000, probably over $20,000. I'm finding this series to be very instructive, it brings back many memories. It has been suggested to me that rotating engine stands make a good beginning for a rotisserie, with a pair of those and some salvaged pipe I should be on my way. I added a worm gear drive from a winch so that I could rotate the cars just by turning a crank, makes life easier.

      @@3ducs thanks for the interest in the channel, glad you're finding it useful. I think its better to spend more in a better shell without missing parts than finding one sub 2k, when these cars rot they rot deep down to the structure, if there is severe rot in the firewall and scuttle it's probably too bad to save. Classic Alfa and other suppliers stock an amazing variety of parts for cars of this age but not every repair panel is available, that's why we made some panels our selves, also the cost starts adding up. As for the rotisserie, I could have gone the engine stand way but a friend made his rotisserie with lots of ground clearance so I copied his plans :) btw the car still isn't done 8 years later but we're in the final assembly stage, this week I started fitting a new headliner kit

      @@raisingjunior6389 Thanks for your quick reply! On the plus side all the parts are there and the car is straight, not dented. It's a 1750, fuel injected. The car was last registered in 1984, I don't know how much of the time since then it's been outside, a fair amount of it. I live close to the car, 20 minutes, I'll have another look this week and check the firewall from inside, the scuttle looks good. I pored over the Alfaholics catalogue, it's quite thorough. The Jaguars I restored needed floors and bulkheads, pontoons, door skins, the lot. I have gas, MIG, and resistance spot welders, air compressor and sandblaster. My house has a walkout basement that would make a good shop, climate controlled year round, the car would be right under where I now sit. I know it would be a big job but I'm looking for just that thing, a challenge. If you'd like I'll report back on what I find this week and if I made a deal for the car, it has a motivated seller, health issues.

    • @raisingjunior6389
      @raisingjunior6389 Місяць тому

      @@3ducs that sounds like a good deal, usually sub 5k cars in Europe are glass donors only but there are still good deals to be found out there. That is a very desirable model too. There is an older thread on the Alfa BB forum, called French blue restoration something along those lines, which covers a lot of bodywork. I used this thread as a reference to check how panels are welded together etc. Best of luck, hope it's a good base, if you have any questions feel free to ask here or on Instagram @raisingjunior if you're on it. I post more updates there

    • @3ducs
      @3ducs Місяць тому

      @@raisingjunior6389 When I pitch my offer to the seller I will point out that beyond the glass and engine/drivetrain there is little of value in the car without someone willing to spend a lot of money and time. I'll go see him tomorrow, wish me luck! He may shoot me down and all this will be for naught.

    Pleased to see a completely renovated rear axle assembly - great work. The only aspect that caused some consternation was the painting of the wheel rims complete with the old wheel balance weights - which will undoubtably need to be removed and others reattached once new tyres are fitted and wheel assemblies are re-balanced.
