Bridgeport and Town of Lake aka Back of the Yards were Lithuanian communities early in the 20th century. St. George's was the first Lithuanian parish in Chicago. I remember performing at the International Amphitheater in the 5th and 6th Lithuanian Folk Dance Festivals in 1976 and 1980. There was a general merchandise store st 3322 S. Halsted that was run by a friend of my father's and next door was a parcel service to Lithuania. Both of those businesses moved to Marquette Park in the 60s. The last remaining Lithuanian establishment in Bridgeport, Healthy Food Restaurant, closed just a few years ago. Halsted still had streetcars as late as 1954.

I grew in Hyde Park from 1972 to 1980 and trust me, Hyde Park has changed. Today it resembles the failings of the rest of the City of Chicago. It's just another PIT of Chicago neighborhoods. Glad I left. Bret Harte, Kenwood High School, 1655 East 55Th Street.

Great nostalgic trip back into the past, I appreciate your post. The old Hamilton theater near Crandon, the Jeffery just west of Jeffrey. (I saw Lawrence of Arabia there the night that Kennedy was shot.) Shirk's Little Store just west of Stoney on the north side. Oak Woods where Kennedy got more votes per capita than any other place. John's Meat Market between Champlain and St. Lawrence on the south side. Thanks for making the gray matter stir! ex of 7145 Euclid many, many decades ago!

I lived just off of halsted and wolfram (in lakeview right after lincoln park) for many years, loved it, miss it.

In the early 1950s my dad worked for Van Cleef Brothers, a division of Johns-Manville at the corner of 79th and Woodlawn. The the company and building are both long gone - I think the location is a parking lot today.

Only if Lake Michigan was just further east, there would be east side of Chicago that resemble the northside of Chicago

I grew up on Halsted street in the 50's and 60's. On the NW corner of Garfield Blvd that was LeMecs restaurant. Just north of that is now a grocery store. That used to be Colonial Savings Bank. Right across Halsted was the Halfield theatre. At 63rd and Halsted there was a gigantic Sears department store. That area was loaded with stores, restaurants, and theatres. It rivaled downtown. Sad to see when so many factories and businesses left the south side. There were jobs for everyone and those empty boarded up buildings had many black businesses. That time will never return.

Loved your video!!! I lived not far from Cabrini back in the day and I have lots of friends from Cabrini. I remember when Dantrell Davis was taken, it was so sad. Not to mention all of the innocent lives that were lost there. I pray for peace and for all of the people of my beloved city!!!

The south side was a whole vibe back in the day

It's deplorable that the theatres and shopping district of East 47th Street are gone. At 12:00, the Stock Yard district is dwarfed by stacks of truck containers, which were loaded with junk merchandise imported from China.

Thats Ravenswood Elementary School on the left at Paulina, not Montessori.

I lived on Ave O and Ewing Ave.

Many of those signs and billboards were there long before I was born and I’m no spring chicken. My two favorite food places in the video were Fat Johnny’s and Rainbow Cone. I miss those days in the old neighborhood. Thanks for this
