@@ImperiousImages Thank you. I hope it is clear.
I have this lens (and many other MF Zuikos), and use it on a OM-D E-M5, with the original Oly adaptor. Once you get used to the crop-factor, it is a GREAT lens. In fact, they all are, and on M4/3 the weird stuff at the edges more or less disappears..

Great slideshow. I noticed your photos are consistent in terms of color. Do you shoot in default jpeg or do you apply a color profile? Maybe a video on your philosophy of editing/photo culling would make a good video.
@@Michelle_Wellbeck I shoot in Raw and use Lightroom to convert to jpeg. Lightroom is set to use camera settings when converting. I usually use auto white balance and standard picture control. Sometimes I increase saturation a little in Lightroom. Thanks for watching and your comments.
Fantastic little lens. A real sleeper. One of Nikon's best vintage lenses for sure. Super, razor sharp. I updated to the 180 F2.8 AF and wow, that's next level (It's even better than the 105 2.5). It's much larger though. I then sold the 200 F4 and even while I sold it, I knew I would regret it.....Sure enough, I did, so I bought another one haha. It's just too darn handy and nice, not to have!
@@Warrior_Resisting_Colonialism I had the 180mm years ago. I agree, excellent lens but heavy. The 200 is much easier to handle. Thanks for watching and your comments.
Why do I always find myself being drawn to images produced by sonnar lenses?!?
@@Democratiser For years I shot with the newer 105, but more recently I seem to prefer the older version. I may change my mind next week. Thanks for watching and Happy New Year.
@ Indeed! Happy New Year!
Hi Jules and thx a lot for this comparison. I am more than glad for you to do it as I suggested it in some of my past comments. In fact first of all true that it s difficult with UA-cam to evaluate the sharpness of these lenses so thx also for’putttingbthe original jpeg , I will have a look. About bokeh you seem to consider bokeh is better if the shape of the lighted points are well round. It s perfectly respectable and your comments in this way are true but honnestly I don t think that some cats eye lighted points ruin a picture… and can even give some character to an image. Finally your video shows that old ( and cheap !!!) lenses are not bad at all and except the advantage of the autofocus in some conditions it s true that it’s sometimes difficult to justify the price of these new jewels… which cost. Thx again and eager to see more comparison next time !!!
@@philmtx3fr Thank you. I always appreciate your intelligent comments. The way out of focus highlights look is a matter of personal preference. I prefer perfect circles, but maybe part of the reason is need to justify spending so much on the Plena. Happy New Year.
@ lol for plena ! This essential is that you are happy with what you buy !
Hi, good work! I am only wondering why you haven't included the Nikkor 105mm f2 DC, a absolute masterpiece of lens design. It's for sure one of the best lenses ever, across the board. I am working since many years with it and am still always stunned with the results from it. And, used with my Z8 it puts Plena to the shame... Happy New Year to you 🎉
@@KarloFio Hi Karlo, simple reason, I don’t own or have access to the DC. I understand it’s an excellent lens. Thanks for watching. Happy New Year.
@julesvuottosphotofocus4696 Thank you for a kind response 😊 I wish, you could get hold of a 105mm D2 DC, or maybe even 135mm DC in the next year. All I can say is, using one of them you can't imagine anything else attached to your Nikon. 105mm DC stays on my D850 and rarely comes down, stay well!
Bought my first camera in 1978 it was a Nikkormat FT3 and later a Nikon F, still have them both and they work perfectly. Left photography in 1985 after gaining experience with 5X4 and 10X8 formats as well to pursue other business interests and returned to photography in 2005 with a D70 and later with a D7200. Accumulated quite a few lenses over that time and still happy shooting with DSLR cameras primarily in the automotive sphere. Mainly do shows. events and racing. Recently returned to film using my trusty vintage Nikons.😄
Thanks Jules for this facilitating comparison and all the other excellent content you have presented this year! Have a good new year and looking forward to seeing more from you in 2025!
@@lumenlarry6197 Thank you. Happy New Year.
Amazed how well the older lenses perform. If you don’t require autofocus they are good option. May lack a little bit in sharpness and may be a bit more abbreviations but as we all know composition is king!
@@tomallen6073 I agree, but may I add lighting. Lighting and composition, in my opinion, are the 2 most important things. Thanks for watching and your comments.
I purchased a 85mm f/1.8 in 1971 and still own it.
@@TeddyCavachon That is an excellent lens, but the lens that was tested in this video is the 85mm 1.8 Z mount for Nikon mirrorless cameras. Thanks for watching.
I’m tempted to take a look at the same aspect using various Micro-Nikkor lenses like the 55mm/f2.8, 55mm/f3.5, 60mm/f2.8, 85mm/f3.5 and 105mm/f2.8. Of course the subject and various distances will be very different. So much emphasis is placed on bokeh these days that I’m sure I’ll find surprises in how they differ from old Takumar, Helios, Rokkor and other brands. Thanks for this video and happy new year!
I have some Takumar's, Rokkor's and Canon manual focus lenses as well others. I will get to comparing bokeh on them at some point. Thanks for watching and Happy New Year.
The 50 AIS looks scary compared to the non AI. They worked a lot for sharpness & other technical qualities and managed to make a dead lens...
Love your Nikon lens videos 🙌 thanks 🎉
Thank you. A lot more lens videos coming in 2025.
Very interesting, only if you closely scrutinize the older AIS lens vs the Z series, I really didn't see much of a difference. No doubt the Z lens are superior...sharpness, CA, contrast etc. but unless you only photograph test charts the AIS lens really held up well. Thanks for these videos....Happy New Year
So much depends on distance from subject to background. I agree it wasn't a big difference between lenses, except for the Plena. Thanks for watching and Happy New Year
Hello Jules, well you proved that the Plena was the Bokeh king (or queen) for sure. However, more importantly, I am amazed that the older lenses measure up as well as they do to the newer Z mount lenses. Anyway, congratulations on an excellent year of UA-cam videos. Wishing you and your family a Happy New Year!
Yes, it wasn't surprising that the Plena was the best. Happy New Year to you and yours as well.
Thank your for this post. Right from you I see a Nikkormat and left the Nikon F (on mini tripod). As I owned them all in the 1970s/80s, my estimation - plus the downsized Pentax M series - is a little bit different: Just like the Olympus OM the Nikon FM offers interchangeable focussing screens: here the items K, B, E, also for the Nikon FE; later the FM2/FE2 came with brighter screens and you can put them into the FM/FE bodies, too. Just like the Nikkormat the OM-1 has the shutter speed dial at command. However, at the FM the aperture ring on the lens is just nearby whereas with OM lenses you must overleap the focussing ring. That's all matter of taste. The starting bases of both systems were in principle different: Nikon had its well estimated pro system and only wanted to downsize the prosumer/amateur line far off the 'heavy duty' pro- like Nikkormats. Olympus started into a completely new era of a camera conception which should become a consistently downsized pro system. However: Neither Olympus nor Pentax were able to satisfy pros who got often disappointed - just like me - about the lack of liability compared to the 'hardcore' Canons and Nikons. I agree that the OM-1 has a much more 'nicer' appearance, and I got some right at their outset in 1973 (one silver, one black, later the same with Pentax MX). Especially the tiny motor drive with the removable battery pack seemed to be an attractive highlight, but this accessory failed due to defective build quality for the sake of which I parted with both Olympus and Pentax but have been sticked with Nikon to the present.
I can't believe the d810 still holds itself after 10 years I have a d5300 and it still punches above my Sony Nex 7 except for video but my got the d810 was an impressive cam for its time
Ordered a BR 2A from eBay and will give it a shot, I have many manual Nikon lenses, the commonality of the 52mm filter thread if a real advantage! Thanks.
@@tomallen6073 That is one of the many great things about Nikon.
It would be interesting to see at what ISO you can replicate the grain from HP-5 in your Nikon digital camera and even other models such as the Sony a7’s. I’d wager it would be similar to 6400 on something like an a7V …
Great video 🎉 What do you recommend for a flash
@@stebanjr831 The FM does not have TTL flash control, so there are many hot shoe flash units that will work. A Vivitar 283 will be perfect and you should be able to find one on the used market. They were very popular when the FM was first introduced. Thanks for watching.

Great explainer video!
Thank you, I always try to give a clear explanation, I don't always succeed.
My first fullframe dslr. After that many more like the D800, D810 etc.. but the D700 is still a great camera.
@Ton-x4r It is still great, but the newer full frame cameras are better. Thanks for watching.
So if I am hearing you correctly, The D lens and previous models work on high MP cameras but the image quality suffers. I must conclude that we should any use G lens.
@@davidbrown2806 It’s not image quality that suffers all that much, it’s that non G AF lenses will not autofocus on Nikon mirrorless cameras. The latest Z mount lenses are superior to most of the F mount lenses, but you will not notice much difference unless you print really large.
👍🏼👍🏼👌🏼
No one should be talking about Film v Digital unless prints from both cameras are compared. Anything else is unacceptable. Film must be hand printed in the darkroom like it was meant to be. Image from digital must be printed to the same size then compared side by side NOT on a computer screen. Only an imbecile does not know that when you scan film you are comparing scanner technology which is out dated by decades. It is fake news to publish a comparison between a scan of a film against a digital image. UA-cam has duty to ban fake news
The legend lives on!
This plus DXO or Topaz is the GOAT
There are actually two versions of the original Nikkor 50mm f2, in 1959 the original standard lens was the Nikkor-S 5cm f2 which has an extra element compared to the later and more common Nikkor-H 50mm f2 which was introduced in 1964. The Nikkor-H is more sharp and contrasty, but the earlier Nikkor-S has tons of character and a great vintage rendering.
@@laservampire Thank you.
As someone who has way too many cameras I am going to not buy any new cameras. Well, maybe a lens or two. I have used Canon for years and have many great Canon EF L lenses. I also got a Nikon Z7 and discovered the Fringer EF-Z adapter and it works just great with my Canon lenses on the Z7. All the automatic functions work just great. I had been looking at Z mount lenses but the prices stopped me and really couldn’t justify getting another 70-200 in Nikon Z when I have a great Canon 70-200 f2.8. Fringer has really saved me some money on lenses.

Merry Christmas from the UK , I was taking some photos this afternoon with my D300 and my very recently purchased Nikkormat FT having found a roll of TMAX 100 , as far as I can tell the light meter is accurate when compared with the readings from the digital camera with the same lens & settings . I have found the camera & lens videos very useful and would not have bought the FT if I had not seen your videos , Thank You
Merry Christmas Jules. As far as what videos to put together, I started watching you for the reviews and "how to" videos with older cameras and lenses. Not sure you have one, but I have a Nikon F and an F2 I purchased on Ebay. If you have one, would love to see something with them. Also, have you ever replaced all the seals on an older camera. @@starscream25 The best way to learn and keep getting better is to do exactly what you are doing. Take your camera everywhere. Thank you for watching.
Yes, watching on Christmas. I got a few lenses this year against my better judgment. It might be interesting to spot differences between the old and the contemporary lenses in the most common print sizes. The question of what we get when we pay more I find interesting. Obviously, we get much more in the photo-taking experience (and that matters a lot), but what about in the prints of the coffee-table book variety?
@@CP23798 Thank you. I will get to lens comparisons early in the year. Merry Christmas.
Several years ago I bought a D700 with a very low shutter count for $400.00. That freed up some money to buy better glass, and WOW! If you couple a D700 with the best possible glass you will have a bargain setup that can go toe to toe with most of the latest technology. Not so much with sports, but for events, weddings and landscapes, the color pallete of the D700 will blow you away. I will never sell mine.

bought the Nikon F with the eye level finder about 13 years ago, sparked enormously my interest in film photography again. for a couple of years now, I wanted the F2 but prices on eBay are way too steep, as with many other brands and models of film cameras. a few weeks ago stumbled upon a fairly good condition silver F2 with a fairly acceptable price tag while browsing thru our local flea market and everything seems to be working like a charm. went back home smiling from ear to ear 😅. happy man indeed.
