Hiking on the AT, Gathland State Park MD Sept 2017
Переглядів 2497 років тому
Short two day hike on the AT near Boonsboro MD. Entered at Gathland State Park and exited at South Mountain Inn.
myself and afterburner just did this cw during the polar vortex. two nights single digit temps. Ice hike! when you go cw you can camp at pleasant stream and rock run. double plus plus good. ccw lets the shelters come into play. cw also has steeper climbs if you want a workout. just saying. if going in the winter take pleasant stream road. marten road or hillsgrove rd are way to dangerous. can be icy.
BEAUTIFUL video, thank you, well done.
Very nice filming of your Otter Creek trip. Looking to go there soon. Could you share what trails you utilized for your trip? Thanks for any info you are willing to share.
I don’t think there is a mountain lion in the area. Was he smoking a funny looking cigarette? 😂
Wow the trail wasn’t cleared well. Did any ticks hitch a ride?
If I remember correctly, we didn't have any issues with ticks on this trip. I don't remember pulling any off of our pooch either.
It looks like a great hike. What phone company are you using and how much of the trail had service?
Did you guys do the trail CW or CCW?
It looks like a nice hike. Were the trail markings good?
There were a few places along the trail that you really have to pay attention. Most of it is marked well
can you spell IGNORANT,Backpack much?
Nice enoyth))
Nice Videos, This is really my favorite channle.:) .🌴🌴🌴excellent ☺️☺️☺️👍👌👍👌👍 🌴🌴🌴 🌴🌴🌴 🌴🌴🌴 🌴🌴🌴 from: Otter Creek Levy 133
Thanks. Hopefully we get back out soon
I really enjoyed your video. When you camped at Sones Pond, you showed a very small creek. Was it a good source to replenish your water, or was it mostly stagnant? Thanks.
I think the creek was further down the trail. Maybe 30 minutes from sones...at the time the water had a nice flow, I imagine its pretty good throughout the year.
How far away from trails do you have to be to set up camp. Can you start fires at a random makeshift camp?
There are quite a few camp sites along the trail. They are pretty easy to spot. I think if you are makeshift camping, I think you have to be 100' or greater. I rarely make a campfire, its a lot of work to manage and ensure its safe before going to bed or leaving the site.
@@caspersadventures4656 thank you sir. Another question would be the firearm policy. Isn't West Virginia open carry state. I'm from Maryland and would like to bring my handgun for protection, unless the park itself doesn't allow it?
@@tmoss017 Perfectly fine to carry. The park follows WV firearm laws. Best resource would be the USCCA map.
nice vid! did this trail in September. What's the song at 34:00?
Trespass by Gunnar Olsen
What happens when someone else comes along to use the shelter? Do you leave your hammocks up and become shelter hogs?
In all of my time hiking, I rarely run into anyone at the same stopping point. Dolly Sods is the only place I can think of that I have seen multiple hikers in the same area. With that being said, if someone stopped at the shelter and wanted to camp, I would take down my hammock and make room. We got really lucky on finding these shelters, we had tornado warnings throughout most of the night.
Did this back in May but hiked it in the opposite direction. Great weather and even better trail. Have enjoyed following your channel and checking out some of the nicer loop hikes in PA.
Nice video. We hiked it in 2018 south to north.
you think its feasible to complete this hike starting friday evening and ending sunday afternoon?
Absolutely...we took some pretty long stops due to the heat and humidity. If the temp us cool enough, I imagine this could be done in a day. This was a great hike!!!
landscape mode makes for a much better viewing experience
Agreed. Check out more recent videos.
wildreness
jay stol here again. your campsite at 34:42 in the video. how far was that from the lookout with the rattlers? you know what's funny? i remember seeing you guys there, but never saw that site before that, and i've hiked the BFT five times. hopefully it's not too far from the lookout, but let me know!
I'd venture to say around a mile or so, I don't remember it being that far away.
Great video
Great views. Were you hiking in the heat wave? I did this trail last year, its one of my favorites.
After checking the weather, I'm guessing the heat index was above 110. It was hot and humid.
Definitely in the heat wave. It was one of the hottest times I can remember being out on the trail!
I can't wait to do this one
This is one of my favorites. The views are unmatched.
@@caspersadventures4656 I've heard there is really only one single major uphill
@@trail_time it depends on your starting point. The south end starts with a 2 mile climb and a few more climbs throughout the hike Starting at the north end, I think it was just 1 real climb to speak of. I remember it being much harder when we started at the south end.
Great vid. I have also had horrible luck with weather.
Your weather looks a lot like what I had at the end of the same month. Nice Vid!
Oh Moxie so sleepy at the end just like me
😃 she usually spends the next two days in bed after hiking.
@@caspersadventures4656 Haha same here
Great Video! I have been also trying to get on this trail for 2 years but every time I plan to we get bad weather and hike another trail. Planning it again for the end of July with my daughter. I was also looking a camping at Sones pond, How were the bugs at your campsite being so close to the pond?
The bugs at Sones Pond weren't that bad. The mosquitoes were much worse further into the trail. If I go back, I would try and camp along the river. Hope the weather holds and you can make it out.
I've always wanted to hike in there, so thanks for sharing! Nice views of the trails and waterfalls. Good thing I'm used to bushwhacking. Reminds me a lot of the Cranberry Wilderness, but maybe even a bit more wild.
Overall this was a beautiful hike. It was about 2 miles that were really rough. As long as you pay attention, the bushwacking parts are intuitive. If you like cranberry, I would absolutely recommend hitting this trail.
At 57:34 if you had turned left and walked out just a bit you would have seen the actual vista. It's a nice view if its clear.
We scoped it out, the cloud cover was low. I bet the view is amazing when it's clear.
Nice video. I have only done part of the north loop using the side trails but I plan to do the complete loop soon. Thanks for sharing.
Was this actually in May? There are no leaves on the trees... Looks more like Fall...
Spring came late to PA in 2018 :/
Definitely May
My family used to belong to the cabin with the 'heated outhouse' .. trust me, it wasn't hahaha
It's a cold, stay-in day; am enjoying yours (and other) adventures in central PA on youtube. I think you and your family would enjoy the Quehanna Trail by itself or as a combo with Moshannon's local district trails that weave in and out the Quehanna Wild Area.
Did you hear any turkeys gobbling during your trip? I want to do this loop this coming spring and hunt/fish as part of it. Should be prime turkey area. Thanks for any info.
We saw turkey tracks about 2 hours into our hike and then again on the 2nd day, we were looking off of a knob. We saw plenty of deer and a coyote.
@@caspersadventures4656 awesome, thanks for the intel!
Did you start at the Masten Ghost town start? which way did you head from there?
We started at the campground up from the ghost town, there was a big chimney. We started there and went straight up the mountain away from the ghost town. Be careful when crossing the makeshift bridges right before the ghost town.
that was awsome
I camped at that "higher" campsite at painter's creek. It was amazing having my own little open area. Bears walked past the campfire area though.
Great video! Looks like you guys had a blast! The pinchot is my stomping ground but I tend to only hike it in fall and winter because of how over grown it is in the summer. Painter creek is my favorite camp site. Thanks for the video!
This was a ton of fun for 2 new backpackers.
Zero get it big boi
Beautiful place! glad zero made it ok lol
How much did u guys hike the first day, my group hiked 17 miles
do loyalsock lollipop loop if you havent
We're doing Pinchot trail next, I will look into the lollipop loop, thanks for the suggestion.
Trying out lollipop in August. Thanks for the suggestion
Casper's Adventures awesome! You'll love it. Worlds end has a visitor center with bathrooms and free phones to use outside. Lots of scenery change and some good elevation changes. Have fun dude!!
How was the road getting to the trail head, I know in the past it has had some damage, hard to drive in. I'm doing this trip in a few weeks. Nice video ! Thanks for sharing
The road was fine. I imagine closer to the trail head it could get pretty nasty if there was a ton of rain.
My girlfriend and I ran into you guys twice on this hike! I was wondering if you were going to post this to UA-cam. Nice talking to you 2! I see you found the shelter. Did you see the water supply?
This was so much fun! Found the shelter and the water source, just like you described. Did you all stay at the other shelter or camp closer to the river?
Glad you found the water! It was easy to miss. We found a great site near a small stream before the river at rock run. We had and awesome evening at the campsite😄! Sometimes I can't believe this is all free. It was a few miles past the shelter. Hiked out in the light rain in the morning. We are getting ready for our next adventure to the Smokie Mountains next week. Hope to run into you again 😀
one of my favorite hikes. hiked this five times, never gets old!
i always wanted to hike roaring plains. maybe this spring, but fall would be better with the leaves changing color.
I enjoyed the hike quite a bit. As far as lookouts and views, this hike challenges the West Rim in PA. I would absolutely hike this in the fall just to see the difference in colors.
Parker said awesome
the "rubber trees" are rhododendron. welcome to west virginia :)
