Prok American Persimmons Review Excellent Flavor and Texture
Prok is a productive and delicious variety of persimmon. Larger than most American persimmons, Prok is thought by some to be a hybrid of an American and Asian persimmon but I'm fairly sure it's 100% Diospyros virginiana. Hardy in zones 5-9 Prok makes a large tree like most other American types. If you are thinking about growing Prok or any other Diospyros virginiana make sure your garden can accommodate a 20-35ft wide tree before planting. If space is an issue and you live in zone 7 and up go with an Asian type they are more compact but less hardy so not an option for anyone in the colder parts of the world.
American persimmons are a deer's favorite wild fruit and they will come from miles around to visit your trees. This is great for hunters but can limit your harvest if you are growing them for you to eat. One good thing about persimmons is one tree produces so much fruit once established that there will be plenty to go around.

Rare Kira Kaki Black/Blue Asian Persimmon tree

Do Huk kam, Kuro, or kira kaki produce black fruits? I grow all 3 and after growing them for several years with multiple harvests I can honestly say none produce black or blue fruits. These wasn't offered by some fly by night ebay seller either...
Persimmon Review and History Meader and Osage American Persimmons
Переглядів 2,6 тис.3 роки тому
American persimmons (Diospyros virginiana) Meader and Osage. Both are 90 chromosome astringent persimmons meaning you must wait until the fruit is soft before eating. If you eat an unripe persimmon it will be like getting deodorant in your mouth and it lingers for several minutes. They are both heat tolerant and cold hardy in most of the US, zones 4b -9b. American persimmon trees grow into tall...

Your latest to ripen? What other varieties do you have; Prok is regarded as pretty early for an American!
About what week do they ripen for you and what zone are you?

Ok love your video, i'll get me a gomi next time I see it at big box store ... used to always see it
Wow! Thanks for that last comment. I've been really searching to trying to figure out whether my seedling has a possibility of being self-fertile. I was told it's a seedling of a variety that's bigger than typical wild varieties and these seedlings typically but not always are self fertile. Wasn't sure if that was accurate.
Are the persimmons labeled fuyu at the grocery store actually yates? Cause that's what it looks like as far as I can tell,
No, you'll never see American Persimmon at grocery stores since they have to be dead ripe off the tree and extremely soft. You might see at Farmers Markets occasionally or for sale on FB Marketplace from local growers, but you should pick it up that day, or within a week if refrigerated.
Which varieties did you graft? And where did you get Autumn Olive stock?
I'm looking for seeds or plants of this Prok persimmon if anyone knows where I can get some!
It needs to be a grafted plant.
I sell grafted prok and 5 other varieties for fall shipment
Awesome, I am going to try grafting some Goumi onto AO this year using young 1- year seedlings of AO and grafting low to the ground. I tried a few grafts years ago but none took. Are any of these grafts still alive 5 years later?
Not sure why people mention in their videos, about chromosome types instead of just using the names consistently, unless your a specialist trying to cross breed these it's mix matching of the descriptions.
"Yates is slammin'." That's what I like to hear while waiting on my grafts to get old enough to taste.
Since Yates is an American Persimmon, why not grow it from it's own roots, instead of grafting, why not just propagate from one of a Yates limb? So if it happens to die back, it will only die back to itself?
@Peter A persimmons as a general rule are very hard to root as cuttings or layer. That's why you don't see any nurseries offering own root persimmons. Grafting is the easiest means of propagation.
Nice form
Excellent
Am I stalking the right person? Do you have Actinidia polygama plants?
I did but cats killed them, They just kept at it until they died.
@@MrShaneerdy Cats are such a PITA sometimes. I'm sorry for your loss.😔
Sorry I didn't say this last year, but this video helped me a ton. Short story is I was out of gardening for well over 25 years, day lilies advanced a ton in that time, some of the ones I got were simply not setting anything. I did wonder if I would be able to get the petals off before the next day, since I thought that could be the problem. I just wasn't sure how to do it right. I messed up a few and gave up. Then I happened to run across this video. Turns out I was being too careful and light handed. This worked so much better.
That is a monster.
Do you know where I can get 90 chromosome seed?
I didn’t think Meader persimmons were that big! I’m planting Meader throughout my orchard to help feed my poultry in the fall and winter, so this is great to see. I’ve read that Meader has a long fruit drop-September to November. Has that been your experience?
To me the American persimmon is the king if I wanted crunch I would eat an apple.
update video ua-cam.com/video/VCFCaUMIxRk/v-deo.html
I will do an update soon. They do have black on them but it's not like the pictures show or people claim. It is more like how Hachiya acts sometimes and honestly may be related to or a seedling of Hachiya. Even the brilliant Fall foliage is on par with Hachiya's foliage.
I think I know what you mean about how some kaki have patches of black on them as if they got sunburned or something. That happened to some of my Nishimura Wase, and Saijo. Good to hear it has good fall foliage too! Some that had bright red leaves here were Cheong Pyong, Miss Kim, and Giombo. Others turn a darker maroon or crimson color.
@@HuyNguyen-ut1kd exactly but it has a little more black than Coffee Cake and Saijo. Hopefully I'll have time to do an update tomorrow.
@@MrShaneerdy One Green World is offering a black persimmon from China. It sold out pretty quick. Not sure if it's the real deal. There's another one out there called Huk Gam, which is also supposed to be black, that some are growing, but the fruit everyone's getting is orange.
Has the color changed at all as they further ripened to black? Looks like a good persimmon if you want lots of fruit at least! Hopefully they taste good.
I have no idea what my persimmon is but it definitely has a wonderful flavor. I think it's wild.
I have been trying to reach you. I'd like some information on 3 pomegranate varieties that you have.
Hello Alan long time brother. I hope all is well your way, feel free to email me with any questions you have.
So if I’m just getting my first seeds now in mid September in southern VA, would you plant now or wait til spring
You can do them now
missdeeva2266 is right you can go ahead and sow them but I would get to it and not wait too much longer if you do decide to do them now. you can see your hardiness zone here planthardiness.ars.usda.gov/ and your first expected frost date here www.almanac.com/gardening/frostdates these will help you better decide if you want to plant now or wait until spring. young seedlings can handle a little frost but don't like a freeze.
Awesome! Thanks for shining some light into my life!
What is goumi
Beautiful collection. Lovely labelling too.
Sorry for not posting any updates. Between work, family, hybridizing, and taking care of the garden it's hard to find time to do much else. For anyone interested in seeing some of my seedlings I uploaded a few photos here garden.org/lists/view/ediblelandscapingsc/?catid=3944 Thank you everyone for the kind comments and I wish you all the best of luck on your seedlings. Happy Hybridizing
How long does it take for a plant from seed to blossom?
Anywhere from 8 months to 3 years.
I have a question do you just take the seeds into the dirt and let them sprout or do you germinate them first?
I direct sow the seeds in the pots but you can sprout them first if you want. Either way works really well.
@@MrShaneerdy What time of yr are you doing this?
@@HandcraftedintheFoothills I'm in zone 7b so we can Fall sow or Spring sow. You just want to give your little seedlings about 5 weeks of growth before freezing temps set in. If you are in a really cold part of the world zone 5b or colder I would wait until spring before starting any seeds. Good luck and thanks for checking out my video.

Sorry for the late reply. I will post a video next spring of how to remove the seedlings from the pots and transplant them in the garden.
What kind of soil and top soil are you using?
Hi, Thanks for your video. What fertilizer are you using for all persimmon tree? How did you name that and what material are that for non erasable tag?
I only use compost on my plants and the tags are called impresso tags but they went out of business 2 years ago when the owner passed away.
I grow sempervivums as well. They excellent carefree plants. Mine are 20 years old. I repot mine every 5 years. I just grow mine in shallow wide bowls and in regular potting soil.
Excellent sound advise. I am also a grower of hemerocallis!
Awesome video you have two green thumbs! First plant you showed can they grow well in zones 8B?
Daniel, that is Gorgeous! I'd love to know the stats on that one.
Thanks Leslie, it's still just a single fan right now but next year I hope to have some stats on it. It's pollen fertile but have not set any pods on it.
Daniel, Wow. I think this one is a keeper! Features you pointed out plus add in two different shades of a slightly smoky lavender with the pale yellow throat providing a good contrast and the white line extending down the petals. Thinking of introducing this one? Randy/GA
Thanks Randy, I doubt I'll introduce it but as it grows I intend on sharing it with others. Right now its still just a 3 fan plant but the fans are super fat.
Great work! Hope your still doing this effort for the day lily community.
Daniel, Impressive collection of sempervivums. You have done a great job of organization and labeling. They all look healthy and happy. Saw a few that i would like to try myself. Do you obtain most from S.M.G. in Oregon or other sources? The cultivar "Zulu" is one that seems to be unavailable anywhere now but once S.M.G. did have it on their website. The overall very dark color, almost blackness of "Zulu" is intriguing to me. Great video and thanks for sharing with us. Randy/GA (verderandy)
Hello Randy, I got most of my collection from fellow members on garden.org. Its a great place to meet new friends and the classifieds section is a great skource for plants at a very good price. SMG is good but I try to support fellow gardeners when possible. Its good to hear from you and I'm glad you liked the video.
Daniel, had no idea goumis were nitrogen fixers. Very informative video. Are goumis worth eating fresh? How would you rate their flavor, sweetness/tartness?? BTW great fruit set on the persimmons! verderandy (Randy/GA)
Goumis are very sweet when ripe but like persimmons they are astringent until ripe. The easiest way of telling when they are ripe is by the color they will change from glossy to dull like blackberries do when ripe.
Daniel, Good to know....perhaps goumis should be in my garden? Appear to be easy growers and ripen early. Now to find room. verderandy
I found this one in our woods, now it sits near my back door. It's still holding up and looks like I may get about 2 or 3 more years out of it before it starts to rot.
No this one isn't one of mine. The hybridizer did a great job with the colors on this one. unfortunately I lost it winter 2017 to rot. For the most part daylilies are hard to kill but every now and then one will not want to act right for you.. Peggy Imrie was one of those for me.
Daniel, Wow! Some very nice cultivars here.....especially the ones tending toward blue and lavender. Randy/GA
Daniel, Is this one of your creations? Randy/GA
Daniel, Never thought of a stump garden. a good idea if you have a stump on hand. Randy/GA
