De Havilland Dragons and Dragon Rapides in Canada
Переглядів 6775 місяців тому
The first de Havilland DH.84 Dragon arrived in Canada in 1934 and the first DH.89 Dragon Rapide arrived in a year later. Of the latter, 16 were assembled and operated in Canada by companies including Canadian Pacific Airways, Quebec Airways, and the Globe & Mail. On wheels, skis, and floats, these aircraft were an economical and relatively safe way to fly in the 1930s and 40s until post-war, pu...

The American's outright fear of the Arrow was the cause for it's cancellation. This fear was the result of the unannounced incursion into US airspace - over an airbase. By the time the base scrambled their fastest jets - the F-86 Saber - the Arrow turned and accelerated away from the pursuing jets (that could juuust make Mach 1.1) exceeding Mach 1.7+. The American had nothing that could touch the Arrow. Zero. Nada. Now, Eisenhower regarded Canada as a Pink nation, that would sell the Arrow to a variety of nations belonging to the very young NATO alliance . And though loss of market share was a concern, the biggest issue was the threat of the technology falling into Russian hands. So Eisenhower call Diefenbaker and old him to cancel the program and destroy the planes - or he would do it for him. The American President threatened invasion if we didn't destroy - not just end - but destroy the Arrow utterly.

My grandmother was a court stenographer in the NWT in the 70s and a lot of her paperwork and tapes made it into my father's basement after she passed. After he himself passed in 2022, I was helping my mother go through all of this and I came across a thick file on 'Panarctic'. This had copies of the accident report, pilot's autopsy report, exhibit reports, and all of the death certificates (as far as I could tell). I am sure this is all part of the public record but it just didn't feel right to dispose of it so I have it. This of course led me to your video.

Thank you for the best ever engineering description of a Messerschmitt 109, in all its aspects, servicing design, and the clever engineering solutions that the German engineers employed especially when you compare it with allied aircraft of that timed. That i have ever heard of on You Tube or anywhere else and that includes " Greg's automobiles channel " who is highly detailed and respected, but i get lost in all the technical detail descriptions and I can't follow him easily. But your descriptions of all the technical details of the 109 have been truly much easier to follow understand and adsorb so brilliant too. I have immediately subscribed to you r channel and enjoyed every minute of your video's thank you so much once again.

The Canadians can't understand that aircraft are like pistols that are made to fire a new bullet. In the Avro Arrow casse it was supposed to launch the new at that time genie missile. By the time the Arrow prototype rolled out for testing, actual American made aircraft flying the genie missile were arriving at squadrons. All the other facts such as the size of the business called Avro or what happened to the products doesn't matter.

A fabulous recounting of that tragedy Dr. Skjenna. I can see your intensity and emotion after all these years. From 1976-79, while working on an Adeco Heli-hoist Rig out of Rae Point, I had the privilege to fly on CF-PAK a few times until it was replaced by the PWA 737-200. Flying from YEG to CZRP over the Monument to flight 416, always brought a thoughtful silence of respect, to every northern resident and worker onboard.

I am not sure your comment about the allies allowing Germany to keep their munitions after the first word war is correct. As I understand the treaty of Versailles stipulated destruction or handing over of all munitions, going as far as mentioning the Fokker DVII by name. The German Fleet anchored at Scapa flow was due to be handed over to the British but the Germans sunk their fleet "on mass" in one go rather than hand it over. The only aircraft that where allowed where unpowered gliders for sports and recreation,
