Take a quick look through my indigenous Bonsai collection just after some light rain. All the trees featured are native to South Africa and are still developing as Bonsai trees. Comment below which trees you would like to see more of. Cheers #bonsai #bonsaitour #bonsaigarden #bonsailife #bonsaisouthafrica
Hie there quick question ,I've never made a bonsai before but I really want to make acacia bonsai as I have so many semi hardwood seedlings at the back of my house....problem is I'm not sure how to start them off and do I remove the tap root to begin with???please assist😊😊
Why can't i get back buds from my young Olive tree planted in the ground for future Bonsai ? Whereever i cut the branch i get the buds right below where i cut the same branch. I want buds further back on the branch Already appreciate your reply and guidance and 🌲🌲
I have an Acacia tree and your video was the first video i came across. Easy enough to do.
Where are you obtaining the trees ?
Hi , where did you obtain the seeds?
Goodday reader. I've got my thorn tree seeds between pieces of toilet paper. I keep it damp. Is this correct to keep them damp and not standing in to much water(drowning? ) I will plant them in soil as soon as they germinate. Beforehand, I've e put them in boiled water overnight. Any alterations? Cobus🐳
Hi Cobus, I have mot tried this method with the accacia seeds, but in theory, that method should work. Make sure to keep the paper moist the entire time. Once they germinate and the small tap root pops out, you can put in soil, and it should be successful. Keep me updated, would love to know if it works. Cheers
hi can the tree handel frost we get black frost where i am in south africa
Hi there, I am not 100% sure. These trees are currently in Limpopo, so i have never had a problem with frost. I have seen this species of tree growing naturally just outside of Johannesburg, before Hartebeespoort.
I am a new subscriber and would like to know what time of the year do you re-pot? And also how do I get my acacias to grow thicker stems? I just started Bonsai.
Some trees respond better than others at different times of the year, but generally, durring spring and summer is a good time to repot, but wait for the full moon 😉 Let me know what trees you are thinking of repotting
I have different acacias and some ficus trees.
I have several growing in my yard and was thinking of bonsi They are not as old as yours still brown or green not sure what kind it is
Message me on Instagram
How much sun do they need after they have settled into the grow bags?
They will be able to tolerate a good amount of sun. I would suggest 3-5 hours of direct sunlight and then semi sun the rest of the day.
@@thebonsaimerchant2030 Thank you
What soil do you recommend when growing from seed?
Howsit Dylan, any soil that drains well will work
Very good job
Can’t here it

Hey BM, I have a fever tree that I want to turn into a bonsai. I know the Acacia's have a tap root, how can I prune the tap root. I've heard that if a Acacia's tap root is broken off the tree is pretty much going to die? What would be the best time to prune the roots?
Hi Armin! Thanks for the message. Interesting question, I love Fever trees and have tried to train them as bonsai multiple times, however, without any success. It is strange, they do not like their branches to be cut back. When you prune and trim, like you would with other Acacia trees, the branches tend to die back. I have asked the question to other well established growers, and no one seems to understand why. I have only ever seen one successful Fever tree trained as a Bonsai, and that was by Mr. Johan Ras, and even he said, after years of growing bonsai, he does not know what the trick is. With regards to cutting the tap root on Acacia trees, it really depends how old the tree is and how well developed the roots are. I would not suggest cutting the tap root of a tree that is younger than 24 months. The best time to repot and to cut back roots is at the start of spring. If your Acacia lost its leaves over winter, when spring comes around you will see small buds popping up on the branches which develop into leaves. Once I see these buds showing themselves, this is when I repot my Acacia trees and have had the greatest results. You can also repot them through out the growing season, no worries. I have just had best results and growth doing at the start of spring when the buds start to show themselves. Hope this information is helpful! Please note this is just my opinion on how to go about it, other growers might have different methods and opinions. Ultimately, its all about trial and error and learning. Cheers
Thanks for the video. Very interesting, and some good techniques. I also enjoy the Monkey Thorn just as you do.
Thanks Chad. Monkey Thorn Bonsai are awesome. Easy to propogate from seed!
Nice collection love what you are doing. Love to show you my collection. Nice
Thank you for the comment Henry. Please get in touch with me via email, bonsaimerchantza@gmail.com. Perhaps we could arrange to meet up. I would love to see your collection.
What soil do you use, is it normal potting soil or specialized bonsai soil?
Thanks for the message. It is my own mix
Nice tree Does this plastic pot have drainage holes?
Yes it does. All Bonsai trees should be planted in pots with holes. I drilled the drainage holes myself
Are you sure that this is a Camphor Laurel, Cinnamomum camphora, as it is nothing like the Camphors that we have here in Australia? They are an invasive weed tree and we have them everywhere, Your tree looks like a quince or pear species. .Whach species of Cinnamomum is it?
Hi there Rod Leys! No, I am not 100% sure on the species. I was under the impression a Laurel and a Cinnamomum Camphora are the same species. The tree featured in the video is definitely Cinnamomum Camphora. Thank you for your insight.
yeah thats the real camphor bonsai and it smells so good even from a distance . i hv one too.
@@thebonsaimerchant2030 thats a real camphor tree , i have one too , camphor is extracted from its roots. and i hv made a bonsai as well , it smells so good , the sign of camphor tree is their leaves smell like camphor.
Mantap mantap bahan yah👍👍👍
Beautiful Trees....👍👍🌿🌴🍂🌱
Thanks Phillip! They are beauties!
She's and absolute beaut of a tree. What is the age estimate?
Difficult to tell. I reckon at least 20 years, if not more.
👏🏼😍this is awesome!
I'm glad you think so!
Is this a camphor loral?
Hi Benjamin! It is indeed!
@@thebonsaimerchant2030 now is it still alive lol they are everywhere in Australia although the small collectable ones don’t have bark like this.
@@horanbenjamin yes it is still alive and doing very well! This tree was about 20 years old when it was collected. That's why it has all that character.
@@thebonsaimerchant2030 Can I as where it was collected? Please?
It’s got a great bark on that trunk. Good choice! 👍
Thank you. I agree. It is a beauty!
Boet, I enjoy your videos and wish you posted more often, but , my necks a bit sore after watching this :) you need to get your camera the rite way round LOL
Lol, you're correct! I made a rookie mistake when I recorded that video. I have got more videos coming soon. Stay tuned!
Love the indigenous trees!
Thank you Mark
Enjoyed watching , thanks for sharing
Glad you enjoyed it
Hi there, what is your soil mixture?
Hi George. It really depends on what I have available. Typically I use home made compost from grass cuttings, kitchen waste and shredded paper, mixed with river sand. If I am planting a tree that requires plenty drainage, I will add gravel stones. The main goal is to ensure there is good drainage, which can be determined by how long it takes for the water to start draining out the bottom of the pot. Hope this helps.
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Nice finish
Epic sprint!
are you south african by any chance ?
Yes, I am.
Thats pretty cool . Love the videos man. May i please suggest if you can share some more knowledge please. when you do certain things to give a reason why. For eg. In the 2nd part you mention after the re potting you will keep it in the shade for a week. I would like to know why and so forth. I have actually more questions about of bunch of stuff you do. Just to be bit more informative about the reason you do stuff. Personally i would appreciate it a bunch. Yesterday i got 3 acacias from a friend the trees are about 10 years in age . It needs a repot and alot of love and i dont want to do the wrong things and potentially hurt the trees more than it is
Thanks for your thoughts. I will try and do that in the future. I am still learning the whole UA-cam thing and getting comfortable talking to a camera. Most of the stuff I do with my trees is based on shared knowledge from other growers and personal experience of what works best. Most of the time I don't have a evidence based reason for what I do. The reason I put the trees in the shade after repotting them though, is because it is a traumatic experience for the tree and it it gives it time to recover. When exposed to sun it will continue to try and photosynthesize but the tree is still in shock. If you have any questions you can message me on instagram @bonsai_merchant_za and hopefully I can give you some advice. I am no expert in bonsai, I am still learning. All the best with your new Acacis
@@thebonsaimerchant2030 thanks for the response, and most definite im going to take you up on the offer to DM you, appreciate it

Hey BM. How long after the repot will you wait to feed? Or can you feed it right away after the repot?
I mixed in some organic guano pellets with soil, but I will wait a about a week or two before feeding with my liquid fertilizer
You have great conditions for bonsai. I had some bad frost damage this year. Freestate
Yes, you are correct. Here in Limpopo it stays nice and warm!
