    I always use a high nutrient compost tea with biochar, have also had good success mixing it with dry mix of greensand, epsom salt, chicken poop, blood meal, and wood ash as a topping. He should bury a large amount of pine bark and pine fines in the biochar area along with a compost tea application. That would get things rolling.

  • @tomh4591
    @tomh4591 14 днів тому

    maybe biochar would be best applied with a swale system to maintain nutrient run off...or at the bottom of a hugle system or something along those lines. probably terrible on top, but good in a THICK soil system like freakin terra preta, lol.

    The spineless nopal is so cool! This is a really unique tour, his veg game is strong. You have to soak your biochar in manure or urine or compost to charge it up before applying it. That also balances the ph.

    • @StacksUrbanHarvest
      @StacksUrbanHarvest Місяць тому

      @@MomoKemonoTTV That's different than cucamelon. Bitter melon is usually eaten when it's green or early yellow, but it can also be eaten when it's ripe. As it ripens, bitter melon becomes tougher and more bitter, and it turns yellow-orange in color. To reduce some of the bitter taste, you can soak the fruit in cold water and drain it. You can also try salting the bitter melon and rubbing it in, then letting it sit for 30 minutes.

    Great video! Succinct and to the point. I’m just a home gardener not looking to be certified organic so I have used PT GC for my raised beds for many years now (post 2004). When we moved back to AL in 2010 I did a lot of research into this subject and spoke with our local extension office which provided me with additional resources to look into. The end result was that I landed exactly at the same conclusion that your excellent video points out. I did not use a barrier on the inside of the raised beds but instead, I built them in the fall and allowed them to sit out over the winter and filled them with soil in early spring. My thinking was that I would allow the treatment to leach and dissipate over time. The extension office pointed me to research that showed that any leaching happens just a couple of inches from the wood. Even with using PT wood, I need to replace my old beds and build new ones this fall. I will try the plastic liner on the sides facing the soil and see how long it lasts. Thanks again for your video and I appreciate your non-condescending approach to presenting the subject matter.

      Along with the in-depth version, I recommend the latest cover crop episode linked here. In it I talk about cover crops that are known to help control RKNs. ua-cam.com/video/tKpgyy7LaVQ/v-deo.html

    I possibly have root knot nematodes...I read that tillage may help..wonder if trendy no till is everything its cracked up to he

    • @StacksUrbanHarvest
      @StacksUrbanHarvest Місяць тому

      @@brianramsey3824 Tilling won't help. The beneficial fungi in the soil are easily damaged by any kind of soil disturbance, whether it's a chemical or tilling. My two most recent episodes get into nurturing the beneficial microbes to create more competition for the "bad guys".

    • @brianramsey3824
      @brianramsey3824 Місяць тому

      @StacksUrbanHarvest some say it will which would make no till counter productive. I guess I don't feel like I've messed my soil up I have raised beds. Haven't done a lot cover crops but do a lot of chop and drop. And this year and other years I've tried to do no til. Basically everything that I read that can help prevent RKN goes against what is trendy now with keeping old biomas in place.

    • @StacksUrbanHarvest
      @StacksUrbanHarvest Місяць тому

      @@brianramsey3824 Yes, biomass, and all of the techniques that help build a healthy soil moves you in the right direction, along with chitin. Last year, I used quite a bit of insect frass, which has chitin, and in June, when I pulled up my tomato plants, I didn't find one nematode knot. None! So soil building, and chitin really works if you just keep working with it.
