Never turn your back and RUN from a bear. It can trigger their prey response. Remain facing the bear, and calmly back away from it. Never go into the wilderness alone, and better yet, always bring a form of protection: Our hands and feet might as well be the equivalent of a back scratchers for an animal of this size and strength. Any time I see a bear I immediately think of the tragedy that befell Timothy Treadwell and his partner, despite them being very (perhaps too) confident around bears.
