Hey there! I'm Kathryn, an architectural technologist and arkitekt MAA in Denmark.
I've noticed that architecture is often presented as this mysterious field, where geniuses create their vision with the stroke of a pen. Likewise, architecture and design educations are often competitive for access, and oftentimes not accessible for the average person.
This is a channel that aims to break down these barriers, and explain concepts, history, and theory in ways that everyone can learn about, whether you're a history buff, looking to remodel your home, or a kid that wants to figure out if this is the field for you. I hope you'll enjoy your stay, and maybe feel a bit inspired along the way.

I didn't quit architecture. I diversified.
The intense amounts of work I had to do as a young architect made me feel demoralized, especially when clients expected me to work for free (or for extremely low compensation). In the last year, I discovered what I wanted to work with, and how to thrive under these conditions. Which also meant I haven't been creating content. But I'm working on that

Disclaimer: The blue and green spirulina, and red algae pigments in this video were gifted to me as free samples by Spira Inc. Ratio: 1/2 cup milk 1/4 cup vinegar 2 tsp baking soda pigment of choice! doesn't have to be algae. Traditionally you would use a borax in this recipe and heat the mix to speed up the reaction but I chose to use a more kid-friendly recipe in case anyone wants to do it wi...

You are asking for an easier way to stay hahaha
I feel you! I left the NYC design scene to have a healthier life but it has also been a challenge flipping to bio design… ❤
My daughter is applying to Cornell. thank you for your video. Which School in Denmark did you attend?
Those links go nowhere. Would you plz put down the recipe here, or fix the links? I'd love to learn more about this , and try it at home with the kiddo!
Appreciate the clarification but are the dupes as durable as the true yaki-sugi?
Thanks for this info. I think I'm going to use the term 'Yaki Mokuzai' as this seems to translate as 'burned wood'.
Thank you so much for this! I'm so glad to know what it was meant to be called.
This is wonderful, I particularly appreciate you going under the different types of seaweed
You did so Well on your danish pronounciation :D but I felt that so much as a german Living here xD
It’s been amazing watching you grow and diversify your craft all of these years. You’re an inspiration! ❤
Please share the recipe link. The link page is gone..T..T
I'm about to blow torch some planks to make some raised beds. It preserves their life so thats why im burning all sides.
I wants to make binder from seaweed
Hi can u give something
You're so cool
HAHAHHAHA the notebook from the seaweed plastic video
You are also in a field that does not pay well.
You much of went to a rich high school, mine didn't even have a foreign language or science class really, literally all we did was practice taking a state test all year so the district could get funding. "no child left behind" awesome.
It's not that deep.. lmao 🤣
What is the tinished product used for or what can it be used for?
I hate how YT has now put "play" & "scroll down" buttons right in the center of all short vids. Is there nothing I can do to get rid of them?! It makes it hard & at times impossible to read or see things that are integral to fully understanding the short! All the text near the bottom of the shorts for channel name, subscribe button, video title, hangtags, & the music track is frustrating as it is & now they have to add MORE visual obstructions & distractions? The developers/ designers or whoever they are who make these changes to YT apparently don't give two hoots about YT users' satisfaction or experience & it makes me wonder if any of them even use the mobile app or mobile site at all.
What are the small particle things you put in it?
Less rambling, more info
This is unnecessary
🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:47 *Sustainable architecture involves more than just adding green features like trees; it requires considering the materials used and their environmental impact.* 01:26 *Greenwashing occurs when sustainability claims are exaggerated, leading to confusion about what truly constitutes sustainable architecture.* 02:09 *The short lifespan of buildings, combined with the use of non-biodegradable materials like styrofoam, contributes to environmental waste and degradation.* 03:04 *Styrofoam (EPS) is commonly used for insulation despite its negative environmental impact and poor recyclability, highlighting the need for more sustainable alternatives.* 04:32 *Current building practices prioritize cost and aesthetics over sustainability, leading to unsustainable structures and practices.* 05:16 *Understanding the sources and end-of-life destinations of building materials is crucial for promoting sustainable practices in construction.* Made with HARPA AI
🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:03 *The building sector contributes to 40% of global carbon dioxide emissions, highlighting its significant environmental impact.* 01:12 *Greenwashing blurs the lines between what is truly sustainable architecture and what is marketed as such, often through exaggerated claims or superficial green features.* 02:09 *The short lifespan of buildings (averaging 50 years) leads to wasteful disposal of materials, contributing to environmental degradation.* 03:04 *Styrofoam (EPS) is commonly used in construction for insulation despite its negative environmental impact and poor recyclability.* 04:32 *Current building practices prioritize cost and aesthetics over sustainability, leading to unsustainable structures and practices.* 05:16 *Understanding the sources and end-of-life destinations of building materials is crucial for promoting sustainable practices in construction.* Made with HARPA AI
Please collect algae from a pond, and turn it into bioplastic, and use the plastic to manufacture a bag, and call it a scum bag. Thanks and you're welcome.
so i will start calling it yakimatsu instead since i mostly use pine. great! Or i can use the norwegian term "forkullet furu"
I'm glad I came upon this video while searching this technique. Thank you for the cultural lesson. I will be burning pine with a blowtorch. Americanized Yakimatsu.
As we
Thank you for this fantastic explanation. I am currently building a house in Ireland , clad in Japanese larch, could you please give me the translation for this? Thanks again with love from Ireland
Great video!! 👍
Would you recommend studying in Europe over studying in the US based on your experience?
Supper happy to find you channel !! Also landside plants like grass and cowdung has wild potential of use as biomaterial, like they do in India ! This same poo that overfertilize rivers and seashores like in Bretagne
We are both in the same boat. But I did RIBA Studio and now work as an architectural apprentice working towards part 2 exams. My education and experiences as a technologist strategically placed me. My advice for anyone wanting to get into architecture is to do an apprenticeship.
Fascinating, thank you!
Thank you for correctly calling it Yakisugi. ("grilled cedar".) Yep, cedar. I know there's some dispute over exactly which conifer, is involved. Here's a Japanese carpenter making a repair and near the end of the video is adding some to the exterior of the house. ua-cam.com/video/yjcqeItTdxA/v-deo.html He's using cedar and about thirteen minutes and thirteen seconds in he calls it yakisugi. When they are "grilling" the wood, there is also a specific side they use. The side of the plank closest to the center of the tree is the side that is burned. A Japanese carpenter would consider that the back or bottom of the plank, and in most cases in the interior would be the side you don't see. But on the exterior that side is burned and faces out.
You're lit
That bit at the end, lol ok. Seems we need to tell Italians that the Chinese own pasta now since there's no such thing as cultural exposts, two or more versions of the same things can't exist at the same time, and something, something cultural appropriation, time to give China back a _huge_ number of things, but at least the French get to have cars (even though people think Germany was the first). Or we can accept no one owns culture, language changes over time, all cultures are subject to misunderstandings and mistranslation, then therein, thereby, and thereafter collectively grow up.
melt it into the plasticiser!!! GOOD IDEA WITH THE HONEY THATLL WORK!!!

I hope this is not one of compulsory studios because I'm not able to make a physical model tbh.
Hi Ms. Kathryn. I am located here in the Southernmost of the Philippines, specifically in the BARMM region. We are the top producer of seaweeds here in the Philippines and I would really love to focus my thesis for my master's degree in Chemistry on seaweeds with the aim of furthering its application. I am fascinated with now I discovered other applications of bioplastic on the manufacturing of utensils, in replacement of synthetic plastics. Using bioplastics from seaweeds is obviously more sustainable. Where can i personally reach you? Hope you can give me insights. Thank you!
there is also an American and a European tradition of preserving barn wood with fire
are you studying architecture at TuDelft without knowing Dutch? I'm genuinely curious because I want to study architecture there but I don't know Dutch and I'm pretty sure the Bachelor's degree is only offered in Dutch
I was thinking the same thing, we have to be fluent in Dutch for the bachelors :(
Thank you so much for your videos! I’ve been trying to learn about making my own paints, and specifically in ways that use more natural materials…I learned so much from this video! Thanks!
Your videos are really nice
