These Mic Cables Look the Same but Sound Different & How to Achieve Lowest Noise Recordings
You brought up an interesting point with the shield actually harming the sound. I've never thought of it but it kinda make sense - it may have a similar effect to cupping the mic with your hand (not nearly to the same extent of course, but maybe just a bit). I think the only use case where using such shield is really beneficial is when using figure-8 mics. John Petrucci from Dream Theater mics up his cabs with sE Electronics VR2 ribbon mic on live shows and he uses a similar shield to block the sound coming from the stage.
Thanks a ton for the review.

Love your advice. Audio is perfect.
Thanks for listening!
There’s a remote input on the side, can I use generic remote control to start the camera too?
Quite possibly, but I'm not familiar with a compatible remote control unit for this camera that plugs into that port. If you know of one that works properly, please let us know.

Great video. Fixed my problem. Still can't figure out what's up with my bgrxt opteka grip though, lol.
Great advice there Barry. My lock skills are one of a number that have been useful in civilian life too. That you demonstrated just how easy it is to get past an inexpensive lock will be appreciated by anyone with valuables to protect.
Thanks!
Just received mine today. After watching your video, I feel a bit confident in connecting it to my vehicle's battery.
Great, let me know how it works for you!
Thanks for a great presentation Barry. No glitz & glitter, just calmly and clearly detailed. Loads of real information without unnecessary padding. Regards from the UK.

excellent review
I appreciate that, I hope it helps you make a good decision!
When I worked in radio as a broadcast engineer we used carpet that is fire rated for vertical installation on the walls of the studio.
Did you leave the door open or closed when you ran the vac?
I had the door closed for the greatest vacuum and deepest cleaning, but that may increase the risk of damaging the vacuum sensor slightly. I never have damaged a vacuum sensor however.
@@Barry-Watson it is easy to pull the vacuum hoses off the sensor before vacuuming
Should I use this as a trickle charger while the battery sits idle for 3-4 months?
Sure, put the charger into a motorcycle or maintenance mode for full time battery monitoring and top off charging as required.
@ thanks for the quick response. What’s the difference between the std and motorcycle profiles?
The other modes do one charge cycle, and then the charger stops. In maintenance mode, the charger says it's off when complete, but the charger continues to monitor battery voltage and will restart as needed to keep the battery maintained for long periods.
I’m glad you mentioned the sound from behind you, that’s forgotten a lot.
Yeah, that's why I think these shields have limited effectiveness.
I love Foxsur 12/24v 150ah or 200ah

Thanks -- It's amazing how much ash gets caught in the crevices. I usually blow it out when I see the performance decline, or after burning about a pallet of pellets.

Sometimes I get tired of waiting for my interface's 48v to turn on and off before I switch mics. Some people say it can kill a mic to plug and unplug with 48v on, but others say that it's a myth and doesn't harm the mic and it's never happened to them. Have you actually heard of 48v destroying a condenser mic while plugging or unplugging? If so, what part of the mic breaks? Should I really go through the power off process every time?
The potential issue with just unplugging phantom powered mics would be the three terminal connections not making contact at exactly the same time, or making intermittent contact causing power transients, causing power applied to the microphone on only one line for a moment. How, or if, that would impact the microphone's electronics would depend upon that specific microphones design. I think the chances of damaging most microphone this way are very small, but at the cost of an expensive condenser microphone, is it worth the risk? I have un/plugged hot microphones many times, and have never had an issue. However I recommend turning off phantom power briefly before connecting or disconnecting microphones since it’s a simple habit that adds an extra layer of protection. The most important thing, I think, is to make sure the channel is muted and gain turned down so when you turn off or unplug the microphones you don't get a nasty transient pop through the system.
Barry, thanks for the vid. I was asking myself the same question, what's the big draw on Convoy lights? I don't believe the CONVOYS come with batteries, or chargers, which is an investments, so that increases the price, and the 20 step UI. Why? I guess I'm missing something🤔
Some of the convoy lights are sold with batteries as an option. Value is a personal decision, I think they offer high quality product at a price point lower than most of their competition. As with most any product, you have to determine what's most important to you in terms of features, quality, and price.
@@Barry-Watson Thanks, its obvious that they are held in high regard! Appreciate the quick reply!
Barry this was just excellent, Thank You ! :)

Can I use this timer to control an actuator, in order to open and close my door multiple times a day (with a delay of about 1.5 hours between the opening and closing each time)? Example: door opens in the morning, stays open for 1.5 to 2 hours, then closes? Same thing in the evening? If so, how do I wire it? I'm a noob.
There's more than one way to do this - let me suggest a simple approach. The actuator has internal limit switches when it is fully extended or closed, so you could apply power full time to the actuator and it will stop when it reaches travel limits. So we just need a circuit that will apply power to the actuator to extend, and then reverse the polarity when we want the actuator to retract. You can do this with a simple DPDT relay. Lets assume 12v DC. To use a 12V double pole double throw (DPDT) relay to output 12V and reverse polarity periodically with a simple timer, you would need to wire the relay to switch the polarity of the voltage sent to your load. Here's how you can set it up: Relay Configuration: A DPDT relay has six pins: two for the common (COM) terminals, two for the normally open (NO) terminals, and two for the normally closed (NC) terminals. The relay's COM terminals will be connected to your 12V DC power supply. The NO terminals will be connected to the positive and negative outputs going to your load. The NC terminals will provide the reverse polarity when activated. Wiring: COM 1 connects to the positive terminal of the 12V supply. COM 2 connects to the negative terminal of the 12V supply. NO 1 connects to the positive terminal of the load. NO 2 connects to the negative terminal of the load. NC 1 connects to the negative terminal of the load. NC 2 connects to the positive terminal of the load. Timer Control: Connect a 12v timer to switch the power supply to the relay's coil terminals to activate the relay periodically to open/close the activator.. The timer will periodically activate and deactivate the relay. When the relay is deactivated, the load will receive the 12V output (connected through the NO terminals). When the relay is activated, it will switch to the NC terminals, reversing the polarity to the load. As I mentioned this isn't the only way (or maybe the best way) you could do this, but it achieves the result with minimum parts - a 12 Volt digital timer, power supply/battery and a relay.
Same issue here since delivery. The throttle cable was let out all the way to the lever. I had a feeling the choke wasn’t engaging based on the engine not running “rough” with the choke engaged. Thanks for the walk thru.
Thanks, glad it helped!
This appears to be a problem I have been dealing with for a couple of years - I changed fuel pumps and filters a couple of times and that seemed to work for awhile - but then recently wouldn't start again after recent pump / filter changes - noticed choke wasn't fully shut - maybe arounf70% shut ...wouldn't start - adjust throttle cable and started right up...Thank you!
Glad you found the solution!
thank you so much !!! this is what I was searching!
I'm so glad!
What if it still does not work? Earlier I tried it and it did work but after a few minutes, I decided to check it if it is still turning on but it didn't. Does that mean my camera is now completely broken? I tried doing the trick again in my camera but after a lot of times of me doing it, it won't still turn on. I don't know if I'm missing a step or what but I'm sure that I followed all the steps. Oh, Thank you for sharing your trick!
Sorry to hear that this simple reset didn't get your camera working again. Sometimes equipment needs more than just a reset, components can fail and then equipment needs repair. In this case usually the camera needs a new main circuit board and that is typically several hundred dollars of repair or you might be lucky and simply have a malfunctioning door switch or contact. If your camera needs an expensive repair, it might make the most sense to consider if this is a good time to upgrade to a new model. You can check the links in the video description for canon cameras that work well for me.
Is there a way to set this sequencer up with a rf remote
That would be cool, but it's not an option offered by this model.

Can I charge 150 amp battery
Yes, of course.
Thanks for sharing your delightful story. Often wondered how that goes down. My early love of radio began in the 70's when my dad helped me build a simple crystal radio (with Cat Whisker) and were able to pick up the local AM station with out needing batteries or power. I was so impressed !!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Just wondering what she would do for a Kit-Kat bar!
My Hafler Dh-220 has Mosfet output transistors and huge heat sinks that get pretty hot. I built the amp in 1984 and never checked the bios so that is on my to do list along with restoring the thermal compound. The bias was set at the factory according to the materials, but I need to confirm its set correct. I was surprised to see a mention that Mosfets run cool in your description given my experience with this amp being a space heater. It still sounds amazing but I'm not using it till I check it out and check the electrolytics
I had a DH-500, and it would run pretty warm at idle as well. Class AB amplifiers, even using mosfets, do dissipate a little heat at idle depending upon bias. The service manuals for those Hafler amplifiers can be found on the Internet, if you're looking for the adjustment procedure. It's pretty simple. Thanks for watching!
@Barry-Watson thank you the video was helpful in better understanding my amp.
- It didn't work for me. I have a Canon powershot s5is 😢
I'm sorry to hear that didn’t work out for you. Unfortunately, some issues do require component repair. Given the potential cost of repairs, this might be a good opportunity to consider upgrading.
I own both SM58 and the SM86, which I have used a lot. It sounds great on my voice, but it has a tendency to cause feedback on stage at loud volumes. I found that cutting around 3K and rolling off top end helped with this problem. In the end, I settled for the compromise of a dynamic mic with the now discontinued EV microphone model ND767. It would be great to try out a U87 in the studio at some point. It is just ridiculously expensive, and I'm not sure if I truly need it. I would like to find out tho. Good video
Thanks, I've always had good results with the EV ND767 also. The Neumann U87 is fantastic with a super lush and big sound, but I think you can get nearly equal great results for a lot less money with some other good LDC mics. Not saying other mics sound exactly the same, but there are other mics that sound as good (or better) in their own way. If you own a studio, you might need a U87 just because clients demand it, but for your own studio if price is any issue, I'd consider checking out other nice LDC mics at 1/2 the price. By the way, my U87s tend to pick up electrical interference a little bit more than my other mics and getting a perfectly silent background with them can be challenging if you are in a place with strong RF noise. For this reason, they are often not the first mic I grab, even though they do have great sound quality.
I had them scan a few of my purchases. It only found discounts when I was following such a referral. Uninstalled the app. Thanks for confirming my suspicion. Also that car sales example is a classic scenario.
Thanks for sharing

That's awesome! Thanks for watching!
Wow. Thank you for making this video. Really helped me get my pellet stove truly clean. 🤘🏻
That's awesome, you're welcome! Deep cleaning with a leaf vacuum can really clean out the stove and improve performance, plus it's fun to do.
What I am wondering why Barry did not use the aluminum heatsinks that were already in the box to connect the bridge rectifier ??? The twist terminals from the transformer should always be taken off and cleaned MINIMUM. THEY always have corrosion which affects the power and performance of all units. JUST saying as I have repaired hundreds of these type of units. I will stand by my experience with successful repairs and many happy customers. Have yourself a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year Barry. Peace vf
Thanks for the tip! So far at the unit that I repaired has been working well. The old Selenium rectifiers were simply riveted to the sides of the box cover as a heat sink. The new silicon rectifier is a lot more efficient, so I don't think it puts out as much heat as the old ones, and likewise I just used the enclosure and a dab of heat conductive paste to dissipate any heat. In my use, it never gets very warm.
@@Barry-Watson Point well made and taken Barry. The new rectifier is way more efficient and cooler running. Have yourself a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Peace vf
@@Barry-WatsonI like your logic Barry. The new rectifier is way more efficient and well priced. I have learned that using aluminum as a heat sink really make electronic components perform best. Peace vf 😀😀😀

Thanks! Glad you found it helpful!
I absolutely love it when someone explains an electrical system using mechanical examples. You are a great teacher!
Thank you for the kind comments. I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
Great video! If this looks fine but still cranks and doesn’t start, any other ideas?
Engines only need three things to run, good spark, compression, and proper fuel mixture. I'd probably make sure that you have fresh fuel and good spark, that's an easy first step. Best wishes.
@ I appreciate the quick reply! I’ll try that out. Mower has been sitting for a while per the old owner. Thanks!
If the engine has been sitting around for a long time, my suspicions would lean towards the fuel system. You could have old fuel residue anywhere the fuel goes, the carburetor, fuel cutoff solenoid etc. I'd start by draining all of it out and flushing with fresh fuel, and anticipate that you might need to do a carburetor cleaning or overhaul and make sure you don't have any gummy fuel deposits in the system. There is a product called 'mechanic in a bottle' which is supposed to dissolve old fuel varnish deposits if they are not too severe. Dump out all the old fuel, put some fresh fuel in with this solvent, wait a couple days, and just maybe it will come to life without major disassembly,
@@Barry-Watson great! Appreciate the info, I’ll let you know how it goes!
I thought my problem couldn't have been as easy as this but it was! You're video is pure gold. Now my mower starts like new. Thank you!
Excellent! I'm glad that helped!
very nice format and information delivery. thanks 🙏👍✌️
Glad you liked it!
Great video, though I'm still unsure that when looking for an underground cable, in my case the Mains Power Cable coming into the property from the power utility company to the exterior mains switchboard located oon the exterior wall of the house, where exactly should I connect the Emitter unit after earthing?
I would probably attach the transmitter unit to the power cable at the house, and trace from the house outward. I think that would be the easiest location where you could tap onto the cable.
I had this in church with a 1x10 combo but the overall sound levels were much lower so was easy enough to boom over the band. The culprit was the bass amp was 4 feet from the back wall and from where I was standing the reflection from the wall was causing a cancellation where I was but it was still prominent out front. I just tilted it against the back wall and turned down and I heard what the audience heard. Have the speaker part of the amp less than 2.5 feet from the wall and pointed at you for improved mids. That or further than 8 feet if you can.
It worked on my 40D which had been sitting around, and I knew it worked fine last time I had it. Thanks so much for the trick!!
it bit long video but. it did help me a lot to decide if I should do a long run RCA cable or the right speaker wire. thank you
