For Sale - 12-key Thibouville Buffet flute, c.1875

For Sale This is a demonstration of a beautiful flute by the French firm Thibouville Buffet. It is made of Blackwood with German silver rings and keys. It is in excellent condition although the bottom notes on the foot need new pads. One unusual feature is that this flute features a B-foot, which is rare on French simple system flutes. It is also unusual that this is a flute that plays optimall...
Demo Prescott Grenser 1-key baroque flute

This is Thomas Prescott #139 a beautiful boxwood Grenser copy made in 1976 with pseudo-ivory rings and a silver key. It comes in a beautiful hardwood case and has joint for playing at either A=415 or A=440. The flute is in excellent condition. It hasn't been played in quite a few years and it would probably be good to replace the tenon corks - string would work fine. This is a good all around b...

Anon German 1 key flute, early 19thC? (For Sale)

This is a beautiful Anon German 1-key flutes made of boxwood with horn rings and a brass key. It is difficult to date. I find it in the style of the late 18thC German flutes but I think it was probably made in the early 19thC. It plays very well and I particularly liked playing CPE Bach on it, music I consider a good test of a flute's quality. I play this demo at A=440 - note that the flute has...

    Given that the six finger note is a B-flat at A415, it sounds like an A at A440…. and therefore this flute is basically of the same scale length as a modern alto flute! Though, of course, without the two bottom notes of the modern instrument. Imagine having to stretch that enormous distance with your fingers on a modern alto….

    • @MichaelLynnFlute
      @MichaelLynnFlute Місяць тому

      of course one of the big advantages of the Boehm flute being that the mechanism allows the fingers to be closer together where on the simple system flute one has a fairly big reach even on a normal D flute.

      @@MichaelLynnFlute I wonder what would happen if one applied the Siccama-flute principles of key extension to a simple-system "alto" flute.... by the way, do you happen to know of anyone on UA-cam who does demonstrations of those wild 19th century English flutes that proliferated in the years after the Boehm system was introduced (Carte, Clinton Equisonant, Siccama, etc.)??

    How do you order this flute? I have a colleague who is interested in starting on baroque flute, but his youngest also is just starting college, so he does not want to spend a lot. I think this is an ideal way to start. I like the sound of these so much more than the Aulos (what is the Aulos even supposed to be, anyway?). I have also been thinking of ordering one. I like having synthetic instruments to practice on because the climate in my apartment is terrible in winter; I put my fragile wood instruments in climate-controlled storage. As far as I can see, Jeff doesn't have a website and I didn't see that sort of info on your website, Michael. Do let us know. Cheers!

    This is a wonderful flute, and a video I'm going to keep. Those upper notes have a very striking sound, sweet yet piercing, and I immediately thought of the sound of a Ziegler csakan. Would that be because of the cut of the embouchure hole?

    • @MichaelLynnFlute
      @MichaelLynnFlute 3 місяці тому

      the flute does have an excellent embouchure hole but the tone quality is from the union of lots of different thing - the design of the bore, the material of the flute, the player, and other things. My experience with the csakan has been that they are rather soft although I have never played a Ziegler.

    • @DouglasBrooksDavies
      @DouglasBrooksDavies 3 місяці тому

      I do realise that; but the timbre of your upper register is very similar in volume to that of original and reproduction Ziegler csakans I have heard, played by e.g. Tarasov. Just a thought.

    When I was a beginning composition student, I knew the clarinet (my brother played it), but not the flute. I assumed that the flute had keys similar to this on for playing the low notes -- which made my first attempts at composing less than idiomatic. Now that I play the flute, I think I would find all the alternative keys a bit intimidating.

    • @MichaelLynnFlute
      @MichaelLynnFlute 3 місяці тому

      I think it is very intimidating as well but for flutist of the day, for whom this would have been fairly normal, they must have been well acclimated to using them. The Doppler brothers played a very similar flute.
