As part of the Organ Grinder Documentary Project, Don Feely demonstrated some of the rhythm unit percussions and sound effects ("traps") that he purchased after the Organ Grinder's Portland location closed and the organ was being parted out. great place: was there in 1983 and 1992...awesome instrument and it got larger and better!
I live in Toronto and we also had our own Organ Grinder restaurant. I’ve been obsessed with these instruments since a young age . I was actually thinking about doing my own documentary on these instruments. So exited for the full film to come out !!!!
Thank you for your interest! The Toronto Organ Grinder was unrelated to the ones in the United States, but it has come up in my research. I even have a copy of an album recorded there. If you know of anyone who was involved in its creation/operation, or has stories to tell, please put them in touch. You mentioned doing your own documentary - if you are a videographer/filmmaker and would like to help develop a short Toronto segment for the film, please contact me using the contact form on the project web site. Thanks!
absolutely fantastic job Nathan!!!!!! re rendering this video. Amazing... I have always loved this since the first time i saw it, except how rushed Jonas was in the beginning parts but to see a glimpse of this no matter the quality was amazing to me as i never got to see this before it closed. This remaster is stunning. Great job by all on this channel. keep this coming.
Thanks Marshall - although to be clear I only worked on the audio, Bob Richardson gets all the credit for the restoration of the video!
Nathan its TJ from windsor i help take care of the senate/fisher wurlitzer in Detroit. I stand corrected thanks to Rob as well for the video. But it sounds amazing on the big speakers. Its the only way this organ should be played back lol. Thanks to all involved in this channel again my enthusiasm of the tpo is derived from this organist and organ. Merry Christmas 🎅 🎄
I wish there was one close by again. Cincinnati; gone. Sarasota; gone. Always fun! Thanks for posting.
Toronto gone as well 1996
Cincinnati could be again. We have a few instruments in storage needing homes. One even as big as the grinder was. Need investors.
🔥
Made me so happy to see and hear from Paul, again, even though the last time I saw him, his hair was all black! Brings back so many fond memories of being at the Organ Grinder
Nobody gets it and it's such a wasteful shame
I got an email today about the sound of Christmas concert & the news about Paul passing away yesterday, I didn't find a link to the video though.
If you are looking for the Christmas video, here is the link: ua-cam.com/video/qCur6vsEbhs/v-deo.html
Greetings from your neighbor down south, in Chico 😊 Merry Christmas
RIP Paul ❤
Wow that shot of the Elephants during its heyday, and then the same elephants during demolition... It's heartbreaking.
Thank you for preserving and sharing this bit of history. I wish silent films were more of a thing. The Elsinore used to show them with accompaniment by the talented Rick Parks, but they haven't resumed since the pandemic.
R.I.P. Paul. God Speed. 😉❤️🎶
Very good job of restoration and enhancement! I really enjoy the vintage commercials, too! Thank you for sharing.
this guy is just banging the tunes out, he's awful... as musical as a toilet seat
too bad he was rushed. I know he likes to play fast, but this was rushed for the live tv show. But i just cant get over the Baby faced Jonas, but then when i see the commercials... LOL yeah this was a bit ago. Thanks for getting this reposted and the documentary.
It was great being at the Organ Grinder during the Christmas Holiday and listening to the music. I never tired listening to the songs while working there and I still enjoy it today this Christmas Season. Thanks for posting, it brought back a lot of great memories from 45 plus years ago.
We had a pizza and pipes close to Cincinnati Ohio, and another down here in Florida, Ellenton close to Sarasota, that closed in 2010. I love organs of all types and it was fun to go to those venues. Believe the one in Ohio burned down. A fairly unsustainable investment. Sad. Thank you sincerely for posting this video.
Happy thanksgiving to my American friends.
This fits the day THANKS 😊😊😊😊
Apparently my music teacher is in this 🙃
Who was your music teacher?
@ Don Feely
Yep, he's in it. Don sat for a full interview in February. He also demonstrated the percussion unit from the Organ Grinder, which he purchased when the restaurant closed. Here's the demo: ua-cam.com/video/FNIj9sBROs0/v-deo.html
Amazing, thank you.
I eagerly anticipate this documentary about the final chapter of these remarkable theater pipe organs' chance at a second life after the movie palaces closed. It takes me back to my childhood fascination with theater organs-the pizza parlors with pipe organs so inspired me as a kid that I found myself during my high school years, playing a little 2/10 Wurlitzer on Monday nights at The Pizza Machine in my hometown of Stockton, CA. This really takes me back to the late '70s!
Thanks for your comment! While being primarily about the Organ Grinder, there will be material in the film about the origins of the "pizza & pipe" phenomenon, which started in California.
Fantastic!!!!!!!!❤❤❤❤❤
From the bottom of my heart.. thank you. Just know that your maintenance of the Portland organ grinder aspired me to be soulfully involved with the maintenance of the Fisher/Senate Wurlitzer to this day. Listening to the regulation and trem sets of the voices ... closely represent this installation and this appreciation for all things mechanical musically ... just makes me happy. Thanks for this video.
Too bad such an interesting and costly instrument is in such a "dead" room and something could not be done to improve the lousy acoustics.
You are of course welcome to your opinion about cost, but regarding the acoustics, this was a quick demo after a long formal interview session. The recorder we brought to get high quality audio from an optimum listening position had technical problems, so we had to use microphones owned by the church feeding directly into the camera, which was next to the console and very near the pipe chambers. It is not representative of the audience's listening experience. I hope to go back and properly record a formal demo, going into each division and stop family in more detail.
this gentleman ..... is the reason why im involved with theater pipe organs. I owe my ear for music .. pitch tuning and even style to this mans recordings on Theater pipe organs. AND my true appreciation to classical arrangements as well. One of the most well rounded organists of this generation. Fantastic demonstration of this instrument that ive known of from the Trio Con Brio days. Jonas Donna and Tom and now with Martin.. ive never really knew much about this instrument. This video sheds a lot of light on what it truly is. Fascinating.
im not even joking.. this is one of my favorite classical pieces... this just made me cry.
wait this is Jonas playing this on the denver organ??!?!?! Where do i find a digital recording of this. Take my money please!!
Hi - That recording, among others, was generously made available to the documentary project. I will check and see if it's available on one of the existing releases form past years. One bit of news you may be interested in is that the three original Organ Grinder souvenir albums sold in the gift shops, often called "At the Organ Grinder" (two from Portland, one from Denver) have just been reissued on CD as a fundraiser for the film. Organ Grinder co-founder Dennis Hedberg recently found digital copies of the original masters that he had made some time ago, and which had been though to have been accidentally lost. We're releasing those, and five previously-unreleased tracks, as part of a set, both via the Indiegogo campaign, and directly here: www.pipedreamsfilm.com/blog/first-time-on-cd-original-organ-grinder-albums-like-youve-never-heard-before/
PS... The "Engulfed Cathedral" version that you heard here was embellished for this video with delay/echo effects and surround sound. Just a bit of a fun experiment. But the unmodified recording sounds great, too!
thank you for this documentary. I would love a copy of this when its available. The reason why i am AS involved in the organizations in Detroit, being a Windsor resident and Canadian, is because of this Portland location that i never got to see. Particularly Jonas Nordwalls recordings. I grew up around on of the most unique Wurlitzers the Fisher/Senate in Detroit. I now after 30+ years of being involved help maintain and take care of that instrument. Growing up listening to that large Wurlitzer in a small theater, and then being at home listening to the organ grinder.. had the same type of atmosphere. I only wish i could have experienced this place. I now clammer to every single recording video and image that surfaces. I have watched the trailer and looks to be a fantastic documentary and im looking forward to hearing Dennis's side. His creation was so well balanced and the recordings were sooooo good. I use them to this day to demonstrate other peoples so call sound systems. Thanks for this.
Hello - thank you very much for the compliments. In addition to the main film, I plan on releasing extended interviews and bonus features for us "organ nerds" out there who crave more technical info and historical tidbits. I hope you will consider contributing to the project at Indiegogo - every bit helps.
As a silent film fan, I went often after I moved to Portland from Los Angeles in 1993. Please include the FACT that the organ played while silent films were shown! I absolutely loved that. It exposed many to the charm of silent cinema and brilliant organ accompaniment!! I blog every week on The Silent Film Group on Facebook for many years celebrating the great stars from the teens through the 1920’s and would love to share what you’re involved with our members!! My weekly post is Antonio Moreno Monday, and my name is Cheryl Monteiro! Love knowing about this project and grateful you’ll be putting the lovely Organ Grinder back on the map once again!! 🎉❤
Hello! Thank you for your interest. Yes, the fact that the Organ Grinder featured silent films will definitely be included. One of the interview subjects, who you can see in the trailer, is Nathan Avakian. Nathan was a young Organ Grinder fan who is now a theatre organist and film composer. For a number of years, he scored pieces for the International Youth Silent Film Festival, which we also covered for the documentary. (Unfortunately the IYSFF just celebrated its concluding year. Perhaps someone else will do something similar in the future.) I hope you can spread the word about this project to your followers. Thanks again.
Thanks for doing this
Thank you, it's been a very rewarding project thus far.
This should be interesting . . I worked for Organ Power Pizza ;) . .
There's not nearly enough photos of those restaurants online. If you have more and they're scanned, the Pipe Organs in Pizza Parlors Facebook group wants to see them!
If you have anecdotes to share, there will be a chapter on other pipe organ/pizza establishments. While the focus is on the Organ Grinder, it wasn't the first and may not have happened if it weren't for several other places that had already successfully implemented this idea.
It's good to take a video trip back to the OG!
The Organ Grinder was 'one-of-a kind! I was there for the Grand Opening! Enjoyed seeing Dennis and Jonas in this video. This was a life-time experience that I will always treasure. Thank you for creating this awesome video.
Hi Don - thanks for the compliment. You commented previously in our Facebook group back in May and I tried to reach you. I would love to chat with you about your experience at the grand opening. I believe you also mentioned you have a recording. Can you send me an email at bob@diaphoneproductions.com ? Thanks much.
Can Not Wait!!
I have two words; Wow. WOW!
Awesome organ... and close to home! I sense a road trip coming for Christmas.
I hope it and everyone connected with it stay happy for a long time.
Paul Quarino ... Well Hello! It's P-W. So nice to see you playing and on this organ. Blessings, P-W
Thank you for commenting - I have relayed your message to Paul.
I'm always a sucker for a good zimblestern
Not Superman! 😢 It has to be the Imperial March from Star Wars.
That is a beautiful sound from a church organ into a theatre organ sound I like the sound of it but pretty unusual for an organ like this
Quite interesting Hammomd simulation. Was that done in pipes or is it virtual in some way??
I believe that the Hammond part was entirely real pipes. Just a matter of combining flues with the right pitches and voicing. There are some digital ranks in the instrument for practical reasons, such as a 32' stop that wouldn't otherwise fit. Large subwoofers with resonators are placed in multiple locations for those.
Thank you very much for this interesting organ lesson. For a non-organist this is very informative. It makes me want to learn to play.
Organtastic ❤❤❤❤
Would that I had more thumbs to thrust skyward.
Thank you!
Super man, super! ❤
Good one. 😀
@@DiaphoneProductions❤❤❤❤Organwonderful
Absolutely fascinating.... This organ is a rare example of a highly thought out combination of sounds.... Generally doing something like this ends in disaster.... HOWEVER this organ is as far from that as ever imagined..... THIS ORGAN IS MIND BENDINGLY INCREDIBLE....
Thank you for this demonstration! What a great organ to play for 53++++ years. 🙂 The 1967-1972 Hammond X66 organ's Glockenspiel is unsurpassed electronically anyway. It's pretty much indistinguishable from the real thing and it's 100% transistorized.
Funny how he refers to the Hammond organ as a "Hammond instrument". It goes back to the patent that Laurens Hammond had to demonstrate and convince a panel of listeners in a blind test whether they are hearing a real organ or not. Apparently him not calling it an organ is his way of saying he wouldn't have been convinced. Well there have been millions of Hammond organs used _as organs_ throughout the world. Let's let you be the judge, watch the video, *Legendary Theater Organists* at the 40 minute mark is an excellent 1930's Paramount Pictures news reel on the all new Hammond Tone Wheel organ. They show two separate tone wheels of the 91 in the organ in all their simplicity being turned by a finger crank. The pickup is a simple wire wound electromagnetic pickup identical to that in an electric guitar, but it is a single pickup in front of each tone wheel, as opposed to the long oval bobbin wrapped with wire on a 6 string electric guitar. So instead of a string vibrating in front of a pickup it is a tone wheel. You will see it in the video, I just thought I'd clarify the bare basics of how the pickup worked since they do not. Note this reel was made before the 1941 invention of the Don Leslie invention of using a rotating baffle to project the sound around the room to imitate theater tremulent ( a combination of TREMOLO, or Amplitude Modulation, and VIBRATO, or Frequency Modulation. So coincidentally AM/FM is Tremulent). By spinning the sound in a projected path around the room two things happen, Volume modulation (AM), and Frequency ( or pitch) Modulation due to the Doppler Effect. Something Don Leslie worked at very successfully was finding ways to scientifically duplicate the effects of a theater tremulent. In 1961 Don Leslie teamed up with Gulbransen organ for their excellent breakthrough "holy grail" *Gulbransen Rialto K Electronic Theater Organ* and created (google it) ISOMONIC SEPARATION. The Leslie 101 speaker introduced the isomonic system. This was followed by the Leslie Space Generator and Isomonic system in the Leslie 102 and 103 cabinets. The owners/service manuals are excellent reads at Captain Foldbacks site. The Lowrey organs models H25, H25R, H25R-1,-2,-3, and -4 (1967-1977) were often paired with these Leslie speakers. Listen to any "Lowrey Eddie Baxter" record and you'll soon be mesmerized by it's sound. Also see 'Rodgers 321C Demo' video, Gulbransen Rialto K, and Eric Lord Conn 652 Demo, and Eric Lord Plays in the Style of Jesse Crawford.
