A week in dental school | welcoming the new D1s
I want to study dentistry in smu help me I'm in grade 12❤
22 is not 98th percentile, it’s only around 90
I took the exam in 2019 so this is based on the percentiles at the time
What is the bone graft made of ?
Depends! Sometimes it’s bovine graft, sometimes cadaver bone
I love your wrist watch , where did you get it ?
It’s a very old Larsson&Jennings watch. Wore it for years, it’s such a classic
Hello, Im a freshman in college and am really stressed about the DAT. Im hoping on taking it my junior year and start studying my sophmore year, is that realistic approach or should I just study for four months like you did?
Everyone is different! I think you have to find a balance based on how strong you feel you are in every subject tested on the exam. I would also avoid studying too early prior to the exam because you might forget the info you learned in the beginning by the time you take it. I think starting 3-6 months before the exam is a good timeline for most people
Hello how are you my sister how much braces
Hey, I did research in my microbiology class, it was a whole year, but everyone in my class did ( not as a group). can I put it in or does it have to be 1:1 just your professor.
I wouldn’t put it as research but you can add it as academic enrichment and describe it. Research is typically something you’d want to include if you’ve ever been published in research paper where you’re listed as one of the contributors
@@SmilesPending okay Thank you, I will add it as academic enrichment
Thanks for your insights! How did you choose which ones to highlight? Any advice?
The things that you can talk the most at length about and you feel like you’ve learned the most from would be the ones to highlight
When listing a position you held in a club (eg. Pre-dental Club), did you list the club advisor as your supervisor?
Hi, typically it’s whoever is in charge of the club’s supervision. Usually a faculty or admin staff member
I presented my research at a conference. Would I list that under research or academic enrichment?
You can list the research under research and the presentation itself under enrichment
Congrats! You are the best🎉🎉
Can someone tell me where I can take a diagnostic test ?
Pretty sure you’re able to take one on DAT bootcamp for free without signing up
Hi! I have been enjoying watching you since I decided on dentistry. I am preparing for the DAT rn and Columbia is my dream school. However, I got a C+ in biology 2 this semester. My GPA is still 3.7 but my science GPA is 3.5. Do you think I still have a chance to get into Columbia? I know number is not VERY low but I am worry since I had to withdraw this class last semester due to personal issue and also it is pre req. Thank you so much for your help!
Hi, first off I know this is such a stressful time but one class will not make or break you! I’d recommend watching my Stats that got me Into Dental School video and you’ll see that you’re still in a very good position. People who get accepted have a wide range of stats
this is actually SO comforting to watch. thank you so much for sharing and we all really appreciate it🩷
Congratulations….
Thank you! 🥺
Congrats!.
Thank you! ☺️
More videos? Especially for the new class 2028?
Hii!! I’ve been watching your channel a lot and I decided to postpone my dental school application to focus on raising my GPA so I’ll apply next spring and take the DAT in January ish. I just recently got a dental assistant position because I saw your video where you recommended it and I start on May 6th! Thank you for sharing your story and I’m so happy to watch you journey CONGRATULATIONS!!!🎉
That’s so amazing!! You’re going to learn so much as a dental assistant that will help you in school. Best of luck on your journey🫶🏼🥳
Congratulations!! For how long you studied for it?
Thank you! I started lightly studying in October, but really got into studying in January so abt 2 months of consistent studying and 4 months total including review time
I’ll be making a video about exactly how I studied next!
Congratulations!! I’ve followed your journey and we’ve exchanged emails re: my daughter ( Columbia class of 2028). Best of luck going forward and thanks for your gracious support!
That’s amazing! Love to hear that she ended up choosing Columbia! If she sees me around next year, please tell her to say hello ☺️
@@SmilesPending Will do.
Congratulations 🎉🎉. I know how it feels struggling in class and not knowing if you pass or not 😅. Happy tears
Thank you! Definitely happy tears 🥹👏🏼

Mam how much dental student loans do you have? Plz reply. Thanks a lot.
Most people attending private dental schools leave with about 500k in loans
@@SmilesPending When I started at Columbia Dental in 1988, the tuition was about 16K. The rent was about $400 a month at Bard Hall dorm. Graduating with 100K loan was a lot of money back then.
Would you mind sharing the link to the anky flash cards you initially found ??
I’m not sure id still be able to find them but I highly recommend making your own bc it helped me so much when initially learning
What were the videos/website that you metioned you used for organic chem? I might have missed it but I dont see it written anywhere, thanks so much youre such an inspiration!
I used Chad’s videos for orgo and gen chem! I watched them on Course Saver bc they had quizzes attached to each video but I’m pretty sure you can find Chad’s videos for free online as well
I love prosthetics! Omg I’m so nervous 😭
Don’t be nervous! It’s definitely a challenge but it’s very important to learn
Can you mention some free resources aside from dat Bootcamp that I can use to take practice test
Chad’s videos were amazing for the chemistry reviews. I definitely learned orgo more from Chad than all my orgo classes in undergrad
Hello Medina always appreciate you answering questions. Do you feeling like columbia (being known for one of the "specialty schools") helps the students that wants to specialize have more "free time" to study for their exams (ie. CBSE for OMFS) compared to state schools that has a lot of clinics starting at d1 (that focuses on general dentistry)? I know you are going for general dentistry, but from your observation / experience. thanks!
Our pre-clinic starts in D1 year spring. And in terms of time off, no people do not really get time off to study for these exams. Most people use the summer break between D1 and D2 year which is 3 months, or just study during the semesters. We don’t get long breaks off school starting from D2 year. It’s pretty much just 2 weeks in summer and 1 week of spring break and Christmas break. Even for board exams we can only request a maximum of 5 days off from clinic or rotations to study or take the exam which is a little sad because it used to be that you could get a month off but the rule was recently changed and admin is firm on sticking with it.
Hello! quick question. are lectures recorded in columbia dental school? how many days did you usually attend school a week? all 5 days a week or fewer? thanks in advance
Hi! also is columiba pass/fail or pass/fail/honors?
All the lectures are recorded but some courses have mandatory attendance that’s part of your grade so you have to be there for those. It depends on which year of school it is, but I was definitely on campus less my D1 year but as a D3 I’m there almost every day because I’m seeing patients in addition to class. And Columbia dental is just pass/fail no honors
Are you worried about the amount of loans you will have to take out? Do you have to do a post-doc program if you choose to go to Columbia?
Please check out my dental school loans and finances video where I talk in depth about this. And no, you are not required to do a residency if that is not your choice. About 1/3 of my class will be doing general so it’s entirely a personal choice
do you think the medical school curriculum at columbia is beneficial or detrimental to someone who’s only interested in general dentistry (as opposed to OMFS)??
I’m going into general dentistry and I don’t think it can ever hurt. It makes you a better clinician because you can spot many systemic diseases before they progress to a severe state and refer your patient to their PCP for follow up and treatment
Mam who much will be your dental student loans when you graduate from dental school and how much do you expect to earn as a dentist? Plz reply. Thanks a lot.
Here’s a video I made breaking this down. Dental School costs HOW MUCH?? - debt, loans, financial aid etc. ua-cam.com/video/NyGJwKRNmVA/v-deo.html
How is the prosthodontics program at Columbia? What kind of procedures do the students/residents do? Prosthetics is a specialty I'm interested in. Also, what is the LGBT representation like in your class? Are you able to have nights out in the city on the weekends?
Our prosth department is great. The head of the department Dr. Song is very supportive and personally helps supervise students through their removable prosth cases. The residency is pretty competitive from what I hear but I have limited knowledge about what they get to do since I’m not a resident. In terms of representation we have lots of students who are part of our Identity club which is an organization supporting and highlighting lgbt voices. And obviously if you want to have some fun in the city the world is your oyster lol
Awesome hearing from both of you. I don’t plan on applying to Columbia because I don’t want to live in NYC but I like hearing your thought process for why you chose Columbia.
aww haha that's totally fair! NYC isn't everyone's cup of tea for sure but the advice can be applicable for choosing a school anywhere I think
I withdrew from an anatomy class a year ago but I’m taking it now and should get an A. Does that still look bad?
They like to see upwards trends so as long as you do well this time it should be fine!
Aren't you expected to specialize if you go to Columbia?
lol that’s not a rule. About a third of my class isn’t specializing and no one’s pushing us to. It’s just easier to do so out of Columbia as opposed to other places, and some people are more incentivized because specialists tend to make more and the debt is a lot to think about
Thank you for sharing your journey with us on UA-cam. ❤ Right now I’m a senior and I am applying to dental school in June and you help me so much ever since I found your UA-cam videos. Especially not having anyone that is in the dental field and can point me to the right paths. My dream school is to go to NOVA or University of Florida. 😊
That’s so exciting! Congrats on being almost done with undergrad and Nova is an amazing school from what I hear 👏🏼🙌🏼
You’ve been a helpful, you’re the best !!
So glad I’ve been helpful! 🙌🏼 best of luck on your journey
Thank you so much for the advice! Unfortunately I don’t have TikTok so I hope I can still enter? I’m currently a junior in undergrad on the pre-dental track :)
Hello friend, you can absolutely still enter if you at least have an instagram! Otherwise I’ll be doing some UA-cam only giveaways in the near future (for the holidays🫶🏼)
Hiiii! Yes I do and I’ve already been following :) yay glad to hear!
Thank you so much for making this. I will be applying to med school during the 2024 application cycle. I am currently a research assistant in the school of nursing at a school in D.C. I have never been interested in dental school but I have loved your content and I do value what dentists do. In my opinion, teeth are the most important feature when I first meet a person.
That’s so exciting and I’m glad it’s been helpful! Personally I loved to watch med school UA-camrs when I was still in my pre dental journey because it’s so interesting to see the lifestyle and curriculum of other students
This is so so useful thank you so much!!
I’m so glad! 🫶🏼
Hello Madina. Do you know where I can find the list of student clubs in CDM? I wanted to see if there is a dental anesthesiology club, but I cant find any list in the schools website. thanks in advance!
Hiii, absolutely! We recently had a club fair that lists all the clubs available at CDM
nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fdocs.google.com%2Fpresentation%2Fd%2F1ELw_c_lk0yUa2dnjXwzxfTeeq-ThnQ_olNIscYXMcB0%2Fedit%3Fusp%3Dsharing&data=05%7C01%7Cmm5899%40cumc.columbia.edu%7C97e9d156ee7d42047a1c08dbbfb2ae6d%7Cb0002a9b0017404d97dc3d3bab09be81%7C0%7C0%7C638314546387233180%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=ZHuYVZsgryuXa5J2YGyr9cR19OO30CGDQbtOQtORBiA%3D&reserved=0
Also, we do have an anesthesia club if that’s something you’re interested in ☺️
Hello. When does preclinic (drillimg teeth prep) start in columiba? Is it in first or 3rd year? Thanks in advance
Great question! Preclinic starts in January of our first year. We practice on manikins with plastic teeth for 2 years before we move into the clinic for patient care in the third year.
@@SmilesPending thank you!!
@@SmilesPending hey just one more question thanks. whats the rent like for most grad students. obviously its going to differ from location, roomates, so on but generally.
Depends on where you live and where the school is. Columbia students pay less than NYU bc the neighborhood is less expensive. Also living on campus is cheaper than renting an apartment. Most people pay between 1000-1500 per month. I have a whole video breaking down cost of attendance on my channel if you want to know more
so you like ortho or what?
lol it’s a great profession but it’s not for me. Most of the work is done outside of patient care and I like restorative stuff like fillings and crowns more.
Would love to hear what you'd like to see next and what specialty in dentistry is most interesting for you to see! We have pediatrics, radiology and oral surgery coming up again in the next few weeks
How is the study-life balance there? Are you worried about the loans?
Totally depends on the year. D2 was definitely most intense academically so I didn’t have as much free time. Now that we’re in clinic and have classes only 2 days a week I have a lot more time for hobbies but also studying for the Boards
In terms of loans, I have a whole video discussing that! How much I owe plus how I’m planning to pay them off ua-cam.com/video/NyGJwKRNmVA/v-deo.htmlsi=BQb179hg26BgW3so
omg i would love to see all of them !! love your content by the way
Ortho rotation coming at you next 🫶🏼
Wait you’re not doing procedures at the moment? Just shadowing?
Depends on the rotation! In emergency and oral surgery for example we are extracting the simple cases and helping the residents. In radiology we take the X-rays. But on ortho rotation there isn’t much for us to do so we’re observing only
I definitely want my dentist to have a booming social media presence. Great job.
Your friend is cute
The lack of self awareness is outstanding. Why are you doing this? So unprofessional
What exactly is unprofessional about this? When you’re on your feet observing procedures for 8 hours without being able to assist, and someone tells you to go home, you go home. Nothing unprofessional about acknowledging that students in the healthcare system get worked like we have full time jobs while paying tuition for it.
Mam how much will be your dental student loans when you graduate from dental school and how much do you expect to earn as a dentist in future? Plz reply. Thanks a lot.
Hi, I have a whole video on my channel breaking down how much my tuition costs every year, and all other expenses! It’ll definitely answer all your questions
