Chris Dawson - “Scene and Variations - Carol“, by Lennie Tristano
Переглядів 8913 роки тому
Lennie Tristano - Scene and Variations “Carol“, named after daughter, Carol. This is Tristano's 1961 piano rendition, and is based on the chord progression of “My Melancholy Baby“. I remember hearing his recording of this back in high school, and absolutely fell in love with it. His dissonant chords and unique rhythmic phrasing was very original, exciting to hear, and inspiring to me. I hope yo...

Chris Dawson - "Moon River" (Alan Broadbent Transcription)
Переглядів 1,9 тис.4 роки тому
My transcription and performance of this beautiful piano arrangement by my favorite pianist, Alan Broadbent (originally recorded on a LP entitled, "Dreamsville: Sue Rainey Sings the Music of Henry Mancini") When I was 17, I was fortunate to have met Alan while he was playing with bassist Putter Smith at a club in Los Angeles called, "Linda's". And he's been a wonderful mentor, teacher and frien...
Chris Dawson - "Beautiful Love"
Переглядів 40 тис.12 років тому
Originally a waltz, "Beautiful Love" was written in 1931 by Victor Young and was featured in the 1932 film, "The Mummy". During high school, I first heard Bill Evans' recording of it played in 4/4 time signature, and it has stuck that way with me ever since. This is my on the spot, improvised version.

One of the very first jazz standards I learned was "All of Me", composed by Gerald Marks and Seymour Simons in 1931. It's chord changes are user-friendly and I just think the tune swings. Here's my on the spot, improvised rendition.
Chris Dawson - "Calico Rag"
Переглядів 12 тис.12 років тому
"Calico Rag" (1914) composed by Nat Johnson (1883 - 1921). I was recently asked to memorize this song for a recording session and thought it would be fun to post it here on UA-cam. I developed a love for the piano through ragtime as a kid, and always enjoy returning to my roots.
Chris Dawson - "Ev'rything I Love"
Переглядів 12 тис.12 років тому
Here's my improvised version of Cole Porter's "Ev'rything I Love", from the show "Let's Face It" (1941). I learned it years ago from a wonderful Alan Broadbent trio recording ("Everything I Love", 1986), and have loved it ever since. My other favorite versions of this song include Bill Evans ("How My Heart Sings", 1962) and Dick Hyman ("All Through the Night", 1991).

Hi Chris, your original post of 'All Of Me' was one of the peformances that inspired me to go and complete my degree, and subsequently, masters in Music (although I still can't reach a tenth). Thanks for sharing your music again. Great sound from the trio :)

I loved it Chris. You are really good at this. I'm crazy about this song. I'm trying to make the move from classical to jazz and it has it's challenges. You have to almost relearn the piano as the styles are night and day. Thanks.

I am a beginner pianist. You always play bass note and 4 note chords át C, E7 and A7, but you never continue at Dm. Why? I haven't found a well sounding version at that regiszter of the piano. What notes inversion would you recomend around middle C?

Woe! way too fast Remember Joplin quote "Ragtime should never be fast it is never right to play ragtime fast." And Nat Johnson would agree.

    • @MooPotPie
      @MooPotPie Рік тому

Define "fast" - because Joplin didn't. It's a subjective term.

Pianist Frank E. Banta and drummer Howard Kopp recorded Calico Rag for Columbia in 1917. I have a pristine copy of that record and others have posted it on UA-cam. It was performed at a fast tempo. Frank E. Banta, who was prolific in his own right, was the son of the pianist Frank P. Banta, a pioneer recording artist and early adopter and proponent of ragtime. Howard Kopp was a prominent ragtime era percussionist. I would presume that Banta and Kopp they knew what they were doing tempo-wise when the recorded the piece in 1917. Here is a link to the recording: ua-cam.com/video/tAByXWmshgQ/v-deo.html
