How I painted the Nightstalker Butchers
I have had a few people asking me to make a how I paint video, so this is my attempt at showing you. I would'nt call it a tutorial as I know I do not have the skills to teach anyone how to paint. Hope you enjoy and Merry Christmas from Welsh Miniature boardgamer.

Thanks for the video, it was very informative and helpful. I must admit that my painting has been less than ordinary of late, and whilst 'Slapchop' does help get minis onto the tabletop quickly, it leaves me feeling unsatisfied when they're done. I like the way your finished miniatures look and it was really enjoyable to see the brush 'in-action' so to speak! Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New year!
Thanks for the kind words, I was kind of dreading publishing this video as its out of my comfort zone. I know what you mean about feeling unsatisfied with a paint job. I think all painters can relate. Like you said I also get it when I have rushed the project and not stopped to enjoy the process. Its that doubled edged sword of getting it done, and enjoying getting it done. The balance can be hard to achieve and I think we all chase the balance. If I could offer any advice it would be take your time with a couple of minis you like the look of. They dont have to be special or expensive minis, just ones you like the pose of or something. Enjoy the process again for a couple of mins. While getting it done with the others. Merry Christmas and hope all is well.
That cultist mace does fit well. I like this kit, but will probably skip it, since I don't really need them. I may well get some of the peasant levy though. They look nice too.
Thanks for the comment. There are so many kits out there at the moment. You have to chose which ones are for you, thats one of the main reasons for my videos.
This is a good palette cleanser of just good painting that pops and shows of the mini!!
Thankyou thats very kind of you to say. My painting is very much like me, SIMPLE!
Bit of essay but ... Really love the foreward!! Great bloody point! "Paint miniatures your way" wholeheartedly agree. The video is honest, raw and you showing what you do, love the unabashed approach and is a good reminder to myself to have fun with the hobby and not loose sight of that (which I do struggle with tbh and end up with tons of stuff I start and not finish or get jaded about painting) We are out own worst critics but seriously good video, you did what you set out to do at the start! Hope you do more in future.🍄👾
Thanks mate very much appreciated. Yeah I get what your saying, people do place an awful lot of pressure on themselves when painting miniatures. Especially newer painters. You and I come at it from a different direction in a lot of respects. I paint purely for the enjoyment of painting, the end result has to be good enough. It probably comes from most of my players don't paint, and that I have been painting on and off for 35+ years. You do commission work where the standard is way higher and that feeling of painting for someone else! To be honest I couldn't do that, I would second guess the simplest decision.
Love the papsikals stuff bags of detail, nice paint job as always loving the Dallas model in particular
Yeah they hit the right level of detail and not flooding the figure with too much. Dallas? not sure what you mean, thats Austin!
@welshminiatureboardgamer356 haha it just reminded me of a man named after a state from a film 😉
@@TheCraftyMini Hmm how strange
Well detailed and some lovely paint work
Thanks mate, they are a joy to paint.
Great paint work! I've eyed these on Etsy for a while, they are great sculpts for sure. But the 32mm is just too big for me.
Thanks for the comment. They are lovely miniatures, as are most of papsikels stuff. The scale really doesn't bother me all that much within reason. I can see why it might be a concern for others though, especially in vs games.
I'm almost tempted to kitbash some Slaanesh worshipping Conquistadors themed around the deadly sin of greed What do you think?
Wow that sounds very cool and fitting. If you do it I would love to see the results. Good luck.
@welshminiatureboardgamer356 Thanks, I'll certainly see what I'm able to do I'd also be down to do some Historical themed Chaos kitbashes, any suggestions?
@@ChaseDaOrk3767 Cthulhu like cowboys using the plastic cowboys from Dead mans hand? I often think about some twisted mutated orcs would be cool!
@@welshminiatureboardgamer356 Those ideas sound pretty dope, I can imagine some mutated Orcs would be like the equivalent of an Uruk-hai becoming mutated by the energies of the Warp from Warhammer
@@ChaseDaOrk3767 Yeah thats kind of the feeling I was getting
Thanks for this ONE!
No problem, thanks for watching.
I got two nightstalker ambush starters on amazon for £20 total in jan 2024, not a fan of them on their own, but good for conversions IMHO. Aiming for a Dead Space style humans, perhaps with WGAs Cannon Fodder set
Thanks for the comment. That was an absolute bargain you got yourself. I really didnt like the reapers, more because of the spindly nature than anything. The butchers on the other hand I quite enjoyed. Very cool dead space idea.
There's no such thing as goblins? What a relief!
Let just ask my buddy Jareth! Thanks for the comment.
Thats a great set
As I said above, I love mantic the company and their games. Their models sometimes let them down. These however look amazing, although very fiddly with the reapers.
BRILLIANT! loving the fact you getting some monsters painted, these look amazing, the colour scheme makes them pop and look really viceral and gnarly, bags of character on these, ive never considered the kings of war stuff but youve converted me. Keep up the g4reat work bud. Looking forward to the painting video!!
Thanks for the kind comment, as always. I love Mantic the company and games, but sometimes their models let them done. This kit was fun. Yeah when I release the painting vid its not going to be great. Learning camera angles, set up, and lighting is not my skill set. Your painting tutorials will not be threatened lol!
Glad you doiing it you've got a really good eye for colour and like the style! If you need any help let me know not a problem 😊
@@TheCraftyMini Thanks for that. Yeah I have done the filming for the first video, so will have to see what it looks like in editing. I have a sneaky feeling I may be out of focus most of the time. Swapping between my reading glasses and magnifying glasses was a juggling act lol! Will definitely be asking questions after as my technical knowledge of this stuff is about 2 decades out of date! Dont want people to watch it and think I am telling them this is how to paint. Its a "this is how I personally painted it", because I know I paint very old school in alot of respects.
Do the mountain orcs! Do The Mountain Orcs!! DO THE MOUNTAIN ORCS!!!
We will see what we can do.
It’s not okay! That’s false advertising! 😭
Lol not sure what is false advertising. Although it is very early in the morning, and I havent had any tea yet!
..some neat painted miniatures there , ..I was given a sprue of these figures a good while ago by a friend and painted up four of them , ..now I'v bought the mounted Conquistadors and will finish the other two , ..great figures and I've done a bit more research and they'll be great for many 16 th century European armies , ..
Thankyou for the kind comment. Yeah I enjoyed both constructing and painting this kit. I haven't got any use for mounted miniatures, so I don't generally buy them. They do look like they would be fun to paint though.
I think the chainmail dwarfs are the 'regular' (neither light nor heavy) infantry.
Yeah you could be right. Its been quite sometime since I opened the dwarf box and scavenged the bits.
They're a really good kit, they go perfectly as the infantry to GW's goblin spider rider cavalry. I have the Mountain Orcs from Shieldwolf and they're pretty nice as well.
Thanks for the comment. Yeah they looked like they would work well with GW range of goblins. Your the second person to recommend the orcs from shieldwolf, may have to give them a look.
These look really good! I bet they would kibash nicely with the cultist 2 box
Frostgrave kits always work well together, its one of the joys of sticking to frostgrave kits!
Honestly might pick these up for everything but the bodies
Them all having little capes was an interesting choice. Personally I would have preferred less Robin hood men in tights, but still I liked them when mixed in with other ranges. Thanks for the comment.
@ I might kitbash them with the elf light infantry to make elf militia. I do love the square shields
@@Maxsminiatures Not a pointy ears collector myself, unless they have green skin!
I wasn't too keen on this kit. They seemed over-sized (or 'too heroic') for my liking. Nice kitbashing though. The smaller arms and weapons really help.
Thanks for the comment. The barbarians are a very detailed kit for the frostgrave boxes. I personally liked them but like everything its hard to get a style that everyone likes. The heads are very nordic and it would have been nice to have an african style head amongst them.
I was slightly disappointed by this set. Their are 5 bodys and 5 heads but 3 of which have integrated heads . So only 2 of the body's can take the heads. Sheildwolf do a set of awesome savage orcs wich are awesome! But they have some gaps that really need filling. They also come on 30mm bases as they are big ladz.
Yeah I can see how you might feel that way about the heads. When I first looked at it I thought that was a somewhat odd choice. I still like them and feel they were a nice purchase. I have since looked at their other offerings. The savage orcs were the ones that jumped out at me. The are monstrous looking which I really liked. Many thanks for the comment and information on the orc boyz!
@@welshminiatureboardgamer356 Let's put this way if you like the goblins you will love the orcs 😁
@@ZacSheehy Ok sold to the stranger at the back of the room! lol
Really great review
No problem, glad you enjoyed. Thanks for the comment.
Good review thank you!
Thanks for the comment and glad you liked the video.
Love the painting
Thank you very much
@ that grey skin looks amazing
These look good, I've not heard of this company liking the chunky character on the faces! Quality looks good, they easy to clean up and put together?
Yes
Yeah for all the above reasons I liked them. They went together very easy, frostgrave like. They were very smartly placed on the sprue and the sculpts were very clean. For a small company they show a lot of experience in their designs and tooling.
@@welshminiatureboardgamer356 I think the sprues were done for them by Renedra or another company in Britain.
@@calvanoni5443 Ah that would explain an awful lot.
Oh! I quite like these... AND I've got a use for them! I want to mount them on magical flying surfboards as shaman-powered fast attack squad. I'll need to track some down.
Yeah they are fun little goblins. Surfboard flying goblins, thats my kind of warped! I bought my kit from Northstar figures, if thats any help. Thanks for the comment.
I got their stuff through a KS, good Kitts mostly, a few exceptions with some of the Arabesque ladies.
Ah never really even look at kickstarter stuff, that would explain why I had never heard of them. Thanks for the comment.
Very nice work
Thankyou kindly
Very Nice 👍
Thankyou very much.
Those look great!
Thankyou very much for the kind words. The miniatures are clean and easy to paint.
Great figures with a very nice paint job
Thanks alot, yeah I have to agree they are lovely miniatures.
Lovely paint job liking how they share colours being apprentice to the mage. And a brilliant game to boot!
Thanks as always for the support. Yeah a matching colour scheme ties them in, a his and hers set from Peacocks! Yeah I like Frostgrave but dont get it on the table often now.
Really cool. 👍
Thanks
That wicked-looking thing is a falx used to remove tree limbs. Great vid!
Thanks for educating me on a Falx, I had no idea. Now I have a name I will google it.
Wow great paintjobs and great kitbashing!
Thanks alot for the kind words.
I am a fan of AK interactive ultra Matt
Thanks for the recommendation and comment.
Wonderful paint job on these figures, congrats!
Thankyou for the kind comment.
An excellent update,great kitbashing
Thanks for that, much appreciated.
A very nice job on these figures. The mixing and matching of parts has gone well.
Thanks for the kind comment. Yeah as I said in the video, the only thing slightly out is the rabble arms. They are alittle ape like in length.
Fireforge needs to make some flagellants!
That would be very cool, and there are certain game players who would be very grateful for them
These look really good, would you ever go into nore detail on the painting ?
Thanks for the comment. What do you mean by more detail about my painting? Do you mean talk through how I painted it, or a painting tutorial video? I have thought about showing how I paint miniatures to my good enough standard. My only problem is I don't feel I paint good enough to teach others. I use alot of techniques that are out dated and aren't the way people like to paint these days. You arent the first person to mention it though, so I will need to give it more serious thought.
@welshminiatureboardgamer356 both I suppose whichever us more comfortable, the paint jobs are good tbf, and more importantly consistent
@@gordomango9337 Thanks for the feedback it really does help me understand how people feel and what they want. I will give it some more serious thought.
Nice video, those kits work really well together. Love how you utilised the faulty spray as burns!!
Yeah the kits work very well. Like I said in the video , my only slight problem is with the length of the fireforge minis arms. Thanks for the comment.
Awesome paint job on thses minis, love the subtile and realistic colors!
Thankyou very much for the kind comment. I do love the character minis from northstar.
They turned out great! I like your way of painting miniatures, the colours remind me of the artwork done by that terrific artist - Angus McBride - who did a lot of art for the old RPG game called Merps! As for varnish, I've used both Army Painter and Vallejo brush-on matt varnish and as long as I only brush on a thin coat at a time, they both work well. Great video!
Ok first of all thanks for the comment. I am glad you like my simple colour palette and style. Second of all I love Angus McBrride and especially the merp covers. I am a huge rolemaster fan and merp, they are definitely my system of choice. In this day and age of rpg is dungeons and dragons its good to see someone who even knows Merp. Ok will try the Vallejo brush on next. I will report back when I have used it. Thanks for the recommendation.
Thanks for showcasing a variety of expertly painted minis on your channel! Have to share more good vibes for ICE's Merp and second using Vallejo's polyurethane varnishes.
@@doctorz-luv9038 Thanks so much for the kind comment. I would say I am an experienced amateur painter at best lol! I have played merp and rolemaster for over 40 years now so very firmly hooked! Nightblades rule!
Great review and very well.painted
Thankyou as always. I am glad you enjoyed the video.
Great video as always and really nice paint job, love the mix of blues and browns on the clothing 👍
Thanks actually took a look at some larp players online and the colour scheme was based on that. Have started listening to your podcast, a good paint along companion.
@@welshminiatureboardgamer356 btyanks bud, we having a bit of fun while I'm getting some big stuff ready for upcoming videos, AHH the days of Larp, used to partake years ago
