PAINTING MODEL KITS: Preshading, Airbrushing, Weathering OV10A Bronco, ICM 1/72 scale (w/ResKits)

    Thank you for this! I served as an aviation electronics tech on F-14s in the early 90s, and every F-14 build i see is horribly overweathered. Our planes hardly, if ever, got as dirty and salt-weathered as most builds make them out to be. I always have to ask if they intended to make it look as if it has been in a boneyard for 5 years. At sea, the salt spray was the big enemy, and a lot was done to keep it to a minimum as it was very corrosive. If the panes got as weathered as most models ive seen, extreme steps would need to be taken to correct it. As you said, subtelty is key in weathering. Especially moden military aircraft.

    Vallejo has a new paint formula for 2024, supposedly, one that comes in clear 18ml instead of 17ml bottles. Wonder how it compares to the old one tested here.

    3:50 pigments and overspray can still be toxic, just because they (the paints) are water based and do not smell, do not be fooled, take precautions still.

    Ooops, forgot to mention my favorite build of the year. Mine were Tamiya’s P-47D closely followed by their F4D Skyray. It’s funny that I have mostly non-Tamiya brands in my stash, and my top two builds were Tamiya. I know I’m weird, but I prefer Hasegawa kits (also love Kinetic and Eduard) over Tamiya.

    • @chrisveya7556
      @chrisveya7556 19 днів тому

      When i spray paint im always at around 18 psi. If the paint does not have the right flow, i usually turn it up to 50 psi spray some paint on a towel full throttle mode. So the airbrush spits out the clogging parts in the paint. Then i can lower the pressure again to 18 psi

    Thank the Lord! you my friend are the ONLY ONE I'VE SEEN or HEARD addressing this issue of OVER WEATHERING!!! The modeling community has Pushed this "Weathering" issue. Modelers have jumped on the band wagon and My thought is that they are using "Artistic License" to Weather a model. Or No Reference material! I laugh at modelers who put a model contest that is over done. When I Look at an Over done model my eye goes to the Heavy Weathering and the rest of the model gets lost. Then the modeler doesn't get his Ribbon or medal or plaque because his model looks like "Heck" Well BURT that's How it Goes! Always put Photo documentation down to Support Your Weathering issues. Less is best. But modeler's are a Stubborn lot! I'm one of them! Wow One oily streak leads to another then another and another, paint splotches, Exhaust stains, Fuel drips, Mud, DUST, OVER CHIPPING!!!! STOP IT!!!!! Maybe there is a Modeler's Weathering Three Step Program. Blessings Darrell U.S.A.

    I've just ruined my 1/48 Eduard Albatross DV due to these decals (and maybe my own stupidity). The entire wing surfaces are covered by very nifty looking lozenge decals so I thought I'd carefully apply them straight onto the nice shiny plastic..................Disaster! I was able to remove the film by carefully teasing it off with a stiff wet brush but when it came off it took with it much of the lozenge consequently ruining it.

    I'm new to airbrushing, but I'm an expert at water. I don't see why purified water wouldn't clean water-based paints from an airbrush completely, and certain thin them down. The obvious exception being if the paint had dried already. The fact they've removed the chemicals from the product would seem to suggest this is true. Tap water on the other hand contains a lot of minerals and may not be ideal depending on where you live.

    I think you skipped over a big sector of the industry: Japanese and Korean Manufacturers. I took a quick survey of both my stash and finished models, and found that: only 16% are from established Western European manufacturers. Only Airfix and Heller, no Italeri or Revell, _shudder_ Why do I have these? They are either new Airfix toolings or vintage kits of planes which no other manufacturer has released since. 56% are from Far East Asian companies, Tamiya, Academy, Fujimi, ARII, FineMolds, Bandai. While not as prevalent in the planes business anymore, they are in my opinion still the top dog in terms of 1/24 scale cars unless you are looking for muscle cars or crazy resin conversions. And I still love Academy plane kits, the fit is amazing, and the detail is sufficient if you aren't building an award winner or a "dissection model". They are perfect for "I just want a P-39 Airacobra sitting on my desk". There's a bigger discussion that could be had here about aftermarket part overload. and Finally, 28% of my kits are from Eastern European manufacturers, all of them resin kits or short run injection molded kits of civilian planes and racing planes. These are subjects that have been deeply neglected by most traditional model companies. I think the community also isn't interested in civilian models, but it's a vicious cycle where there are no non-resin kits available, so most people refuse to build these kits and then only resin companies serve this niche market. Looking at my eBay and Super-Hobby baskets, I have to say, most of my future purchases are going to be Eastern European kits. Why? Because they tackle the weird stuff, the prototypes, the civilian planes, stuff that everyone else shies away from but those are the focus of my model building
