Notes on 3 guitar parts for Space Cadet (Kyuss)
Still working this one out (as you can tell, with the not-great timing and that 'solo' section). I've made this vid to share with friends so we can work out our guitar roles, but if it helps others, great.
0:00 Demo
5:10 Tuning etc.
6:16 Intro.
6:48 Guitar 1 (bass line)
9:40 Guitar 2
12:10 Guitar 3
13:22 Solo (for others to flesh out)
The bass line in this song hooks me every time :)

PJ Harvey, Dress, cover on resonator
Переглядів 2677 місяців тому
It's a nice realisation to pair early PJ with a reso. I loved that early, raw sound of hers & think a reso fits. I'm playing this with 'Alaska Piks' on 3 fingers so there is even more rasping than if you played with just a regular, single pick. Down-tuned 2 steps for the voice. No sound mods other than compression via a Cali76 pedal. Slight timing issues around the 13 and 55 second marks but wh...

Reso vs dreadnought (resos not just for slide)
Переглядів 350Рік тому
This is not a perfect grab but I wanted to get a video up ASAP while putting the Swamp Dog guitar up for sale - linking the video in the ad. These guitars have more or less the same strings - phosphor bronze 11s with the lightest and heaviest strings swapped out for 13-equivalents. The only difference is that the dreadnought strings are uncoated. I made no changes to the audio - no volume adjus...
Roll the bones - cover & how to play it

To skip the demo and go straight to the 'how to' section, go to 3:45. Gotta' love this song. Didn't realise the stompbox audio in my track was so loud. I won't remix so turn your bass down if necessary. My version blends the Audiotree version and the original. Take what you can to make your own version. Aside from the intro and the next 4 bars, mine is slightly different to the one offered by B...

How to play Free Ride by Nick Drake in CGCFCE
Переглядів 7 тис.Рік тому
If you look up how to play Free Ride (as I did recently) there will be no how-to videos but a few covers and some TAB in the tuning of AADEBE. Who wants to tune their 6th string to A? Not me. Nick has a few songs in CGCFCE so that's the tuning I've used for this. It's actually pretty easy to play (the left hand at least) in that tuning. Hope it helps others out who are in the same boat I was in...
It's possible to play glass slide on a nylon string guitar
Переглядів 9182 роки тому
I recently got a steel string guitar (Gretsch Honey Dipper reso) to dip my toes into slide guitar. But then I realised it's possible on nylon too - you just need inbuilt reverb. This video is on my Yamaha Transacoustic classical guitar so all reverb is coming from within the guitar. A Tonewood Amp would do the same. Strings are Daddario hard tension carbons EJ46FF. The demo's not perfect but it...
How to play "I'm on Fire" - rhythm and picked guitars in duo, like The Other Favorites
Переглядів 2212 роки тому
Not so long ago The Other Favorites covered "I'm on Fire" and of course, did it nicely. I decided to unpack that and turns out it's not too hard so thought I'd show a 'how to'. I haven't given much detail on what the picked guitar does, just which notes are fretted, so you'll have to use your ear or leave a comment if it's an issue & I might do a quick demo follow up. I use a capo at 4 (standar...
How to play Over the Hill by John Martyn in DADGAD tuning
Переглядів 3,3 тис.2 роки тому
No denying this is a super clumsy 'first' video. I was prompted to make it after seeing so many UA-cam covers in standard tuning (when working out how to play it), and none of them sounded quite right. This version is in DADGAD. Don't pay much heed to the voice. I just wanted to show another guitar option. Once you see the parts, you can ad lib like extending the intro or interlude etc. The onl...

    Hey Hey-jax! your video really solved the free-ride mistery! I was missing the hig octave melody, so I figured it's possible to do it with in the first string with the 4th finger, following the movement of notes on the 3rd string😃 (so for the open F I octavate it with the first finger) and also wanted to say a big thank you! I'm still trying to get the right hand magic you achieved! 😂

    Nice hearing the difference between the two guitars. Good luck with the sale. Nice playing, I never managed to master the use of a thumbpick. I have given up trying, life being short enough. The resonator sound particularly good on the Hayley Henderickx track.

    • @hey-jax
      @hey-jax Рік тому

      I agree - it always feels like something's lacking when I play that Hayley track on another guitar. I'm surprised you never mastered the thumbpick, judging by your vids. If you decide to try again, I found it helped a lot to clip the pick to barely longer than the side of my thumb (I use Herco heavy thumbpicks). Each month after that I clipped a new one just a few mm longer than the last. It probably took 6 months to get comfortable at full length, and now I'm starting to use it for occasional flatpicking between strums or fingerpicking, which makes it really useful. Bass strings on nylon tend to hold up volume compared to bass steel strings so there's less need for it on a nylon guitar - plus flatpicking on nylon isn't nice as they don't have the resistance of steel strings. Anyway, thanks for stopping by. I like your Cascading song - new sub :)

    • @hey-jax
      @hey-jax Рік тому

      Thanks :) The tuning is DGDGBE. The Honey Dipper is nice but it needed a lot of TLC from a good tech guy so factor that into any price. Almost all new frets, plus adjustments to bridge, nut and truss. The frets were the worst. Now I'm quite happy with it. Got a better (deeper) voice than the Swamp Dog (Recording King) and is a fraction of what a National would cost. Pity no cutaway....

  • @neryleal5265
    @neryleal5265 Рік тому

    The problem is that the picking pattern sounds nothing like the original along w the fretting hand playing something very different. The result is essentially a song that barely resembles the original, and doesn't even make a lot of sense. When you're going so far as to change the tuning to cgcfce it makes the argument invalid for not tuning to the original tuning of his songs

    • @hey-jax
      @hey-jax Рік тому

      Yo Nery, I'm happy to take considered opinions when offered in the spirit of sharing - but I can't make sense of yours. 1. It's a cover. It's not trying to be the original. The resonator should have been enough of a clue that I'm not aiming for a clone. Personally, I prefer it faster with the reso sound. 2. Of course the fretting hand is playing something different. It's in a different tuning. 3. Which invalid argument are you referring to for not using the original tuning? Is it the one about dropped A making my 6th string lose all intonation because it would be floppy? As you can hear in the video, I already lose intonation when fretting high in dropped C. But wait, maybe you can't hear that because maybe you don't play music. If you did, you would have totally understood the argument, as stated up front after the demo.

    Open Csuss4 ?

    • @hey-jax
      @hey-jax Рік тому

      I guess it's a combined Csus4 & Cmaj bcos there is an E on the 1st string and an F on the 3rd string - unless it's an extended jazz chord.... The 3rd string (F, making it sus) is fretted at 2nd fret with the rest open for the tonic chord (which the song ends on), which would make the tonic notes CEG = major. (With capo on 2 = D major). I didn't approach it with notes or chords in mind tho; just messing around after being in the same tuning for Pink Moon.

    So good, and innovative. If you had other songs in a set tuned to Nick's usual CGCFCE then I agree your version would be the way to go. That said, I do like his original tuning. It really blooms. What's cool about it to me is that it's standard tuning, except for two extreme drops, the one you mention on low E (to A!) and G (to E). Capo on 3rd -- I always tune with Capo on, so that low floppy 6th string isn't so apparent to me. In fact he mostly pedals the C bass on 5th string and only hits 6th string here and there (that tab you refer to has correct tuning but is wrong in some ways). Anyway, really enjoyed, thx.
