N500 vs N300 Homag CNC machine
We have been looking at a new CNC for the upcoming shop. Just figured we would do a comparison video. Both machines are great. What would you choose.

We wrestled with this same decision between the N300 and N500. Ultimately we went with an N300 due to availability and needing a machine quickly. A few of the things you noted are things we didn't completely consider when making that decision. I wish we had a bigger drill block, as a commercial shop we occupy spaces in the drill block for things like locks and dowel holes, so we don't have nearly enough 5mm bits. Also the dust cap is super annoying every time and holds things up in a high production setting. One big difference to consider between these two machines is also the Z-height. If you are only cutting 3/4-1" sheet goods an N300 is great, if you are milling 2+" hardwoods you won't have enough space once you add tooling. N500 also has a bulkier chassis, more rigid and more accurate. I believe on the N500 you can also get a tool changer that follows the gantry, saving tool change time. N300 5x12 with push-off is up to $150k list now for reference
I have a very nice Homag nesting machine for sale at a great price
great video
show the finished product!!
very nice
is that kramer in the back???
very nice
I run the N 600, and I really enjoy it.
6:16 People should strongly consider just buying their second machine first. Great advice even if you don't go that route it's a fantastic thought experiment
I would like to see "Lean" Admin processes. Any ERP systems, cad Systems, Scheduling Systems, whatever you have that you are willing to share.
Do you do the toe kick 128mm as well
Did you do an update on the black and red bins?
We used microvellum as our nesting software.
I’ve had the replace the middle pin after a few years. They get stuck after a while.
We edge banded the ones I ran. The fly cutting was satisfying lol. We use to have small pieces get caught in the offload gates and eventually it would shear parts of the grids around the edge causing air to escape from the gaskets. Also had a programmer use multiple pocket routes the plunged instead of ramped cause the board to catch fire. Burnt a whole through the wood, mdf and melted part of the grid quick because of the vacuum feeding it. Shroud covered the initial ember and the fire was underneath. Operator only noticed because of the smell. Step one. Stop machine, step two cut the dust collector off. (It was inside the building) 😅
Operated a Thermwood 4axis for a high end furniture company after operating homag 3-axis machines for years. It’s a whole different ballgame and amazing to see solid wood planks being carved.
Taylor jones the salesman by chance? That’s who we dealt with. We had a lot of the same set up at a company I worked for here in Georgia. I managed and operated the machining dept.
very valuable insight, thanks a lot for making these videos I've learned a lot!
Great video. As you mentioned at the beginning, there are far too few videos about woodworking machines that really go into depth. I work in R&D at HOMAG, so it's really interesting for me to see the customer perspective.
I know you guys run some serious production but flattening several times a day is insane. Get some AllStar CNC tile gasket, pretty sure it still works with a vacuum clean head. Should last you quite a while if you're careful with the Z height. It will prevent having to re-flatten all the time. I run a 10HP Becker. Get in touch with Mike or Daniel, they'll get you setup.
how do you keep the spoil board from warping? My shop uses nylon screws and places weight on it overnight, it still warps.
Thanks for sharing you knowledge - Interested in how your twin vacuums are set up " In series or do they control a certain section" ?
They typically control different sections of the table.
Could you talk about over coming or avoiding melamine boards warping after they are cut due to tension in the board been released?
Hey lean brothers, thank you for these videos. My question : what is the smallest part you would feel comfortable cutting at full speed in 3/4“ melamine with the spoil board only ?
I'm curious what their number is but in the meantime another point of data from someone who has the same machine, 4" is our limit on part width where we don't even think about it.
We run an N300 and cut 3" parts all day without any movement, We do cut 1 1/2" parts sometimes as fillers and they generally hold down fine if the spoil board was surfaced somewhat recently. We have had them shift on an old spoil board before.
Flashing is the correct term. It’s similar to concrete.. before it’s cured, the surface of concrete “sets” before the core. Same with wood coatings. When the wood coating “flashes” the surface of the wet mils has dried but the film build is still wet below the surface. That’s why you can still put a finger print on a flashed door.
Our paint shop always has to fill the milled panel because of the imperfections. How do you make it perfectly even?
Thanks lads👍
Impressive shop man, good on you two!
Saw this video. Liked what you are doing so much I just bought a Circle T Lock Miter machine. Those guys owe you a sale!
You won’t regret it. There are two different cutters they offer. Make sure they give you the ones setup to tape and fold.
@ I appreciate the heads up. I was considering the diamond tooling. Do you guys use that?
We do not
We’ve had the same experience!
Great video. We use tape as well but have never seen that type of handheld dispenser before, looks like it could save a lot of time.. can you tell me what brand it is?
We got them from amazon - amzn.to/410praU
@ fantastic, thanks!
I really like all your videos. Would you consider making a video about asana? Also a video about how to price a project and also about the process made to avoid mistakes with measurements of the sites and the manufactured cabinets!
We just got the same machine at the shop we work at. It’s been two weeks and we are still figuring it out. How did you find the barcode format for auto loading the programs? We have a scanner but it just reads the barcode eg. The NC file name and we have to manually load it. Your way is so much more efficient. Is it a prefix or suffix to the code? And that label to pick the table side is amazing. Should I call homag and show them your video? 🤣🤣 Either way love you content. Can’t wait to see more!
Call Stiles Tech support they'll help you set up the scanner properly. Sounds like the directory isn't setup correctly.
Love the new machine! Would be great to see a video on how you make the 5 piece melamine doors.
What do you mean since you put the store in? What is that?
They have a storeteq material handling system
CHANNEL BIG SEO PROVLEM
I always remember four things. Material breakdown, material processing or machining, assembly, and finishing. I guess loading and delivery. Keep them in order and it’s hard to go wrong.
what kind of camera did you use for this
Now this needs a Update lol
Hi guys, I love the content! It would be great if you did a video on the office side of things. I think you mentioned before you use Asana and it would be great to see how you plan and keep track of how long jobs will take! Thanks!
Do you have a video showing the maintenance of the CNC's?
Hello sir, can't you help me how to operate weeke CNC machine
100% agree. Don’t tell Brad!
Do you have the back carved out a little bit to prevent warping?
What’s your take on pbc or ply core cabinet boxes?
I have a question guys I am trying to purchase a pressure tank for spray painting from sinks do I really need agitation for that note: I use sherwin Williams EMERALD SECON QUESTION IS WHAT NOZZLE SIZE SPRAY GUN I SHOULD PURCHASE THANKS ALOT
Why are you using a surge protector at every machine as opposed to just one at the service entrance or subpanel(s)?
I haven’t looked into that but I’m going to ask our electrician about it.
I think the power surge effected your microphone, one more thing to fix 😮
Unfortunately my mic wasn’t working, everything was picking up through Daron’s. Decided to release the video anyways. Sorry for the poor sound.
Great video would love to see a detailed video of your assembly system/processes, also how do you get work, do you sell direct ormake and install on contract. You have a great set-up
Where do you get the bowtie filters? I have a Makor and love this idea for Makor and open booth. P.S. Thanks for your videos, very helpful!
