Treating Cyanobacteria with Chemiclean
i've been fighting this for a week now with microbacter 7 in the morning and hydrogen peroxide at night, cut my white lights to 0. Works a little bit but im about to go onto chemiclean. I'm done with this crap, driving me crazy lol. Not to mention my coraline algae started to die off when the cyano came about.
@@SeanLaughs yep! Do what you can naturally but if that’s not working just take it out with chemiclean. The hobby is meant to be fun, it’s not worth it to be driven crazy.
@@Saltyrootsjax Very true man, trying to enjoy it lol
Manual removal and the addition of nitrate and phosphate will allow competing microorganisms to outcompete cyano and once nutrient numbers aren’t zero the cyano should stay at bay. I syphoned out my cyano. Taking sand out with it. Dose nitrate and phosphate at night instead of day. Not sure why that helped but I remember doing a double dose of phosphate at 2 am and haven’t seen cyano since in my 200 gallon system.
I never used chemi-clean or any other chemical fix. If it’s killing cyano then what else is it killing?
Get that UV going Stat!!!! UV has always knocked them back for me! I think you have the kind that UV will kill
@@gregorykarapetian2822 unfortunately, this strain is prorocentrum which stays in the sand bed and lower rock. It doesn’t naturally go into the water column to be sterilized. However, I’m hoping as I continue to siphon it, and move it around, I will make it go into the water column a the UV will help!
Keep up these videos man! As a guy who also is about to have a newborn I just sold my system and regret it so bad. I got the itch bad. Watching these videos gets me really motivated to start a new system. Might at least start cooking up some dry rock in a 100 gallon Rubbermaid tote so I don’t have to battle this as bad.
@ great idea to start seeding some rock. I have a decent amount in the sump on the bigger tank and think it’s a great idea to always have some live rock on hand. As they say, the hobby can be as expensive or as cheap as you make it. Plenty of ways to have a successful reef tank on a budget. I’m enjoying the 20 gallon way more than I thought I would and it’s super easy and inexpensive to run. Appreciate the support. Comments like that definitely make me want to keep making the videos!
Sorry you’re going through this frustration. Thanks for sharing. Great content.
@@samlevine1114 thanks, Sam. Really appreciate the support!
Try the water glass, worked for me, silicate is in natural sea water, I think we remove too much with our rodi systems, let the distoms cover the sand and rocks for a couple of weeks, then stop adding the silictes, after a couple of weeks they will use up all the silicate in the water then die off, and should have killed the dinos too by starving them of food and light, clean up crew also eat diatoms, silictes also feed sponges and micrograms so it’s a total natural method to try.
Very helpful! Fixed my issue!
Thanks for the video. So how it this after long term use? I ask because that ceramic Bering is supposed to spin freely on both the steel shaft and within the propeller. I have used the echo tech grease both inside and outside the ceramic bearing but it seems to be hit or miss with the noise issue.
@@thereefaholic this was over a year ago and I haven’t had any issues since. That said, both of my mp40’s are pretty old. I honesty need to replace them at this point. They have served me well for many years tho!
Was that torch ever a long polyp one? There are many varieties and could just be that this one is and will stay like that. Looks very healthy from my end. Great update. Congrats on the new to come baby. My youngest is 12 now. We have 3. That's it! Lol
@@queencityreefs no, I can’t say I’ve ever seen it extended too long so maybe that’s what’s going on. Very helpful and thank you!

A question friend, is it necessary to put the movement pump on it? Waterbox cube 20 ?
@@manuelsanlucar_ No, not necessary. The return pump is plenty of flow for the coral I have. If you had SPS corals in a small tank, you would likely want to add an additional small wave pump or 2.
@@Saltyrootsjax thanks 👍🏼
What are you using for your return pump and circulation pump
@@15JDMRuckus on this setup, I was running a Neptune COR 15 and two mp40’s but he mp40’s were turned way down.

@@MikeLemming Thanks, Mike! This next one is looking pretty gnarly so far.
Birdnest doesn’t encrust. I usually cut into two large pieces and glue to rock. I would definitely turn off skimmer because of 0 nutrients
@@moereefer just cut it right at the base of where the colony starts and glue that right to the rock, correct? Just get rid of the current single support stick lol

I am considering buying a Prostar. Would you recommend that tank?
@@michaeltuminello8173 yes I do recommend their tanks. If you are picky about the stand finish, make sure you understand the Prostar tank stands have a shiny gloss finish as opposed to a matte finish. Personal preference thing.

no need to mod .just adjust your gate valves let the water level little lower than the emergency drain .
@@trapshooterlam right but if the top of the emergency isn’t high enough/close enough to the teeth of the overflow, even when you raise the water to slightly lower than that drain, there is still too large of a drop from the tank to the water level in the overflow box on this tank, causing the slashing sound. The drain needs to be raised higher so that when you raise the water via the gate valve, the water comes in and has a very minimal drop to the water line.
Nice tank excited to see the progress! With such a small tank im suprised you didnt fill it up with water to see if the hard water stains would be visible before you went thru all the stress and trouble to try to get rid of them
@@Luxuriouswhite 😂 probably would have been the smart move in hindsight. I was pretty confident with at least one of the methods, I would get them off tho and I really would have preferred to get them off even if they went away with water. Still should have checked it out first like you said tho!
There’s lots to like here, but nothing to see here.
Check out Top Lids. I’ve got one for my Waterbox 180-5 and love it.
Thanks for sharing this! The zoas at 13:30 and 13:35 are incredible. Do you have any idea what they are? Does Bryce sell these?
He does sell his zoa’s but unfortunately, he does not ship coral. Only sells locally.
I put about 145 into my tank, say your estimate is pretty solid.
Nice setup , we started around the same time and its nice to see we have the same " progression " keep it up !
@@davidcastonguay2069 what are you keeping? SPS, LPS, mixed reef?
Im keeping LPS and leather coral ! But i only have 5 coral for now im ont the " keep your time with everything " 😅 and im always scared to add something new in the tank .. im on the project to setup a frag quarantine !
@@davidcastonguay2069 if you have the space, a coral quarantine is very nice to have. Definitely best practice but don’t get too worried. Over worrying takes away from enjoying the hobby. Over the years I’ve learned pests are inevitable. Nearly impossible to 100% avoid them. Instead, do what you can to prevent them without driving yourself crazy and when they do pop up, don’t panic. There is always something you can do to take care of the problem.
@@Saltyrootsjax i close my last tank because of aptaisa ! So i dont want this crap again ...

@@gsxrfire8310 didn’t notice that. Thanks for the tip!
Um but if you take a shot every time he says you know
I checked my ulr phosphorus. Definitely a difference between gentle shake and vigorous. Now you got me second-guessing my results lol.
@@reefs363 yeah at the end of the day we just have to remember the most important thing is to put more focus on the trend of the results than the specific number. Stability is king in this hobby! I would just do 3 tests once a month and take the average.
The clownfish jumped, the cat got a treat. 🤷♂️….result nowhere be seen, shame really.
@@johnbrand1893 I suppose that’s a possibility as well. Never had a clownfish jump but I know all fish can and will sometimes do it.
I just ordered this and unfortunately couldn't get it delivered to my house. I had my LFS order it and will be accepting delivery for me. I will then have to use a uhaul and some movers to load and unload. I can't seem to find a weight estimate for the display tank itself. What would you say a rough estimated of how heavy the display tank was when you had to move it onto the cabinet and is it doable with 2 or 3 people?
@@Inkmice I’m not sure on weight but I would say definitely 3 people. I had three to lift mine. All three of us very average size and were able to do it pretty easily. I think it would be tough with just 2 tho.
That's what the gate valves for the knob on the inside of the cabinet will raise the water level and kill the noise
@@iansmith2847 correct, that is what the gate valve helps with. However, if the emergency drain isn’t tall enough, it doesn’t matter how much you tighten the gate valve for this particular problem. The noise is from the water coming into the overflow box. The water in the box is too low, causing the water coming in to splash. Again, you are correct in needing to tighten the gate valve to raise the water level but because the emergency drain isn’t tall enough, in order to raise the water high enough to eliminate the noise, you would need to tighten the valve so much that the water is then completely covering the emergency drain, which you don’t want. So, the emergency drain needs to be raised.
Doesnt help, Ive tried 200 times. The tricking sound can get incessent
Just watched your tank build. Looks great. Good idea of using acrylic rods to build your rocks cape. One tip though in between the rock that was stacked and the rods were showing you could had made a thicker putty like cement and put between the spaces and then use a small rubble of dry rock to push against the putty cement to create intentions and simulate dry rock!
Very nice 🙌👌✌️
Nice! I added a one spot fox face In my waterbox and the purple tang was not so happy for few days, just like yours after a few stings it started to leave the foxface alone and now they’re best friends 😅

@@francescodivincenzo5765 nope! They didn’t come back. I think chemi clean works very well. While general advice will tell you to find the cause of the cyano, I personally don’t think we know enough about it to really be able to pinpoint the real cause, so just take care of it and move on!
