Hello and welcome to my little corner in this world. Here, we enjoy all things sewing, vintage clothes and book related.
Can you sew a jumper? (rather than knitting it)
Hello dear friends! Today I'm overcome by the need to try to sew a jumper rather than knitting it - because unfortunately I cannot knit but I can sew! Let's see how this goes...
The pattern I'm using is a very adapted version of the Truly Victorian Bishop Sleeve blouse with the sleeve pattern being fully self drafted (sorry!)

This weekend we're making a pinafore from a wool mix fabric. For the bodice I'm using the Rosella pattern by Schultz Apparel and for the skirt I'm using my trusted Butterick B5970 pattern. We're also going to dye our hair, cook and create some content together! Since I've finished reading Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas I've been completely captivated by the world of Far and Witches and Magic, so I've decided to make a little ToG inspired dress. I'm using forest green pre-washed linen for the dress, 100% cotton bedsheets for the blouse and satin, cotton canvas and chainmail tulle for the armour. Which pattern have you used for the skirt please.
I'm the opposite! I've been knitting far longer than I've been sewing, so the way to construct garments through knitting made much more sense to me. But now that I have a bit more sewing experience, I'm starting to be able to better wrap my head around sewn garment construction. I love it all.
Pls use elastic yarn, so it stretches a little and you can get in and out.
Sewing with knits can be a challenge. You need to know if you have a 1 or 2 way knit, And what percentage of stretch you have. The higher the percentage the more it will stretch. Also when sewing make sure to lengthen your stitch distance. You might have to play around with your tension as well. This will help your seams to lay flat or at least hold together better. For now you could add a key hole opening in the back to make it easier to get on and off. But you’d need to have a little bit of extra fabric left over to be able to do that. All that being said, as someone who is an avid knitter, I can attest to the fact that the more you practice the faster knitter you will become. I can knit an adult sweater in 2-3 weeks. And that feeling of finishing a sweater is so gratifying!!!!
Absolutely love the ceiling! ...and you are a wonderful UA-camr. Very enjoyable to watch your projects come to life.
I had the same problem of not being capable of doing the motions with my hands that knitting requires. Last few years I’ve been knitting. I learned a lot from the American Knitter on UA-cam.
I have lot of experience with knits and I have all the machinery you need for it, but I know its doable without and you managed it very well :) So I am voting for keyhole opening at the back! Very lovely project, absolutely love the colour.
You need zig zag stitch but with a walking foot. Also you can buy ribbing for cuffs and collars which makes it easy to finish. Or use elastic. Make basically stright binding. Ive been experimenting with stretch fabrics lately and learning a lot. Oh and i would recommend jalie patterns they do great fitting stretch patterns. Also youneed to stretch the collar as you sew to fit the hole.
So stunning! Colour is amazing on you and it’s hard to find items like this that fit this well in the brands so I definitely think it’s worth making them! Does it matter if the seams aren’t stretchy? Could you just overlock in the usual thread we use for sewing? I guess that would depend on the knit fabric and the tightness of the garment.
This turned out super cute! 😍 As a knitter, my advice would be to sew the collar with the ribs going vertically. It might not be as aesthetically pleasing, but knitwear with always be stretchier in the direction perpendicular to the ribs (that's why, for example, you'll rarely see a scarf with ribs running across it, because it will want to stretch towards the extremities and will get deformed pretty quickly). Anyhoo, with you 'collar ribs' aligned vertically, you'll be able to stretch it a lot more to fit your head in and out 😊
Yes, this! The rest is absolutely beautiful and the collar should be an easy fix.
Thanks for the comment because you explained it way better than I could. ❤
It looks so cute on you! I think Lady Rebecca Fashions did a vlog on making an Edwardian cycling sweater out of knitted material.
Knit fabrics are the devil - so I think you managed really well. And it sure does look cute! If the collar is done with a narrow zic zac it's a bit easier to get on and off. Of you ever feel like making one again (I myself don't touch jerseys anymore, they drive me insane!)
Very cute! Sometimes my projects are just learning projects too 🙃🫠 Maybe if it isn’t too much work, you could cut open the collar to make it easier to take on and off and then use a frog enclosure, buttons, ribbon, or a decorative pin to close it up once it is on. I’ve never sewn with knit fabric so I’m not sure how difficult finishing the edges would be after cutting the collar open so maybe it’s not worth fixing
You could add a keyhole opening at the collar back and close it with an antique looking button. The jumper itself is very appealing and looks great on you, so do not give up. A you-tube viewer from Texas.
That's exactly what I'm was thinking 😂
Well done you! Knitted/jersey, not a fabric I would reach for! I'd end up with a nervous breakdown! It turned out really cute though! I hear you about the knitting. I do know the theory, have done a bit many years ago, but not returned to it. I crochet instead. By the way, you could cover the sleeve edges with some lace maybe. I pissed myself laughing when you tried to take it off! Both cameos you worn are beautiful. Where did you get the one with the cat?🤪
Try knooking instead of knitting. You do it with crochet hooks so at least if it doesn’t work out you can crochet instead. Plus I find it 10000% times easier than knitting. I think the sweater turned out great though. You could always try using miraflex thread, it has some give so you can use a very narrow zig zag or even a straight stitch.
You should give knitting another try! I started a few months ago and I really enjoy knitting while watching youtube or a show. My first project was socks and second an Edwardian sweater. There are also patterns that have you knit the individual peives of a sweater and in the end you sew them together. Maybe that would be a method of knitting a garment that you would enjoy?
Looks really pretty, I like it. Maybe you could try elastic thread (eg. Seraflex) for knitwear next time. That should do the work quite well.
It does look great on you! I have gotten a few patterns for fitted retro knitting and one detail they have that might be incorporated in such projects as your jumper is adding a few buttons on your back for easier wearing. Also saves the collar from stretching too much.
I'm just pinning together knit fabric to make a cardi as I watch this. My first knit sewing apart from shortening leggings.
Final words: Stunning! Absolutely devine!
It looks Lovely. I have a sewing room now but am struggling to decorate it.
Oh my gosh, I don’t know if I could actually pick a favorite color. I love red though, I do tend to gravitate I think towards reds
I loooove it! In fact I love just over the shoulder things like that, with or without sleeves! For all my love of historically accurate, I love fantasy too. Ones ideas and adaptations! That's, I think, in the end of the day, the whole point of creativity!😊
The dress turned out beautiful! And I love the other skirt too with that cardigan. Your cat is hilarious! All cats seem to that. Mine certainly do!😂 I know what you mean about circle skirts! I ,over them, it no matter how many videos I watch, I don't get it! Especially this whole pie thing. And don't even get me started on people using inches!😂
This turned out sooo fantastic!! Absolutely love!!
What a cute little girli-cave you created! Excited to see more content filmed from there now :)
So beautiful! I love everything about this room! You've done an amazing job. The ceiling is absolutely beautiful! I love those little touches and have done similar things in the past! Loved your dresses as well. And heavens girl, I know your pain regarding storage. I have non either. My spare room has shelves and baskets and boxes but it's not enough! Like you, I have loads of interests. My bookcase is full to the brim, with books on top of other books, and some more, also in the spare room, wanting to put up more shelves in the sitting room. Unfortunately, I'm not handy, and my partner, well things are always very, very slow. Currently trying to catch up with some of your videos, working my way backwards!😂 PS: I agree with you that some "renovations" should never be done! Criminal! An insult to the senses!😂 Your flat is gorgeous now! Well done to the both of ye!
What a stunning sewing space!!!❤❤You did a fabulous job of the floral painting!!!!!!🙌🏻
Looks lovely, if you add a hook where the hoover tube is it won't attack you every time you go to the hidden shelves, personally I say more climbing vines, I did in my bedroom and it was fun, killed my neck. ❤
Lovely space you have created 😊
Thank you for the cute video. I love your old fashioned vibes. Congratulations on mustering yourself to make such a bright & welcoming workroom. I hope it continues to suit you well, and that Jack has a cosy book somewhere to enjoy his tech & whatnot. 🌻💖
I just turned my spare room into my workshop. It's so good. I love it so much. Your room is beautiful!
It looks so cosy and lovely :) I'm sure you will create lovely things working in it :)
Absolutely beautiful! I love watching your videos ❤️
I am needing to recover my house after a crazy summer. This is inspiring!
Floor troll time! (Ala Maxey!)
My god i feel for you so much. 🙃🥲We have a fireplace with a 100+ year old carpentered, ornate wood top and the previous owners just painted over it with cheap paint. 😭
The room is beautiful and so you. Thank you for sharing.
Where is that BatBoys t-shirt from??? Asking for a fri-, no, me. I'm asking for me!
it came out so beautifully! genuinely so jealous! 😍
Such a lovely room, very inspiring!
It looks amazing & totally suits your personality!
It's so pretty and cozy so far! I love the pink for the walls and the floral wreath. You did a great job on the vines on the ceiling...that's so hard honestly (never done it though and dunno if I would) but you did amazingly tbh. Really excited for you and your new sewing room!
I was so thrilled to see you'd uploaded a new UA-cam video - I never bother with Instagram, so all of this content was a sheer delight to me! Congratulations on helping Jack to finally realise you needed a sewing room! 🎉 And it's gorgeous 😍 The wall colour is perfect, I love the tartan curtains, and the flower paintings on the ceiling and the corner are the "icing on the cake" 👌 Enjoy the Highlands! And I hope you get some good news from the publishers soon 🙏
I love how your new sewing room turned out. Have a lovely birthday.🎉
How cozy & happy it seems! The ceiling looks truly amazing. I am looking forward to seeing more of your sewing adventures ✨🧵🪡 Best, Lynne
Beautiful ❤
B.E.A.Utiful! 👌
Virtual sleepover sounds wonderful. I've just found you. Love the vibe and looking forward to spending time in your company...and definitely blissing out with you at your wool fabric, despite that it's spring here in Australia. I can always appreciate wool fabric!
That was a lovely cozy vlog. It's Spring here in Australia, maybe getting warmer, but still cozy. Beautiful pinafore, it suited you like a gem.
