In today's video:
I attend my NENDY (Nearest Event Not Done Yet) parkrun, taking on Brierley Forest for the first time. My current 5km PB is 22:08, which I did at the No Walk in the Park 5k race in August 2024. Can I get a new PB at parkrun today?

    I was just thinking that given it was the B course, and knowing the route, that your performance suggests a Sub 21 on a flat road course. I see Mr Garmin agrees. The feller one place in front of you, Andy Wetherill, is a legend. He was winning races in the area as a V45 when I was but a youth in my early 30s. I think you should go for all your first 50 parkruns being in different counties. 'I've got my Grant' , they'll say in years to come. Finally, if you keep saying race parkrun HQ will be sending the boys round.

    Hi Mark, I’d be happy to do my first half in 2:10 but it’s unlikely. Very pleasant to join you on this training half, I know the area pretty well as I often rode my motorcycle to Matlock via Bakewell on the A6 and still have a Z800. Sorry about the premature loss of your dad and best friend, that must have been very difficult for you. Good luck in the 1/2😊💪🚀. 1:42 is quick!

      Hi Andy. I think a good amount of the battle when it comes to getting a decent time in a race, is finding a course without too many hills. This Monsal Trail one seems pretty reasonable. 99m of climbing, and mostly downhill on the way back :) Matlock Bath seems very popular with motorbike riders. Quite often see them all parked up on the main drag there. I've always been a bit scared of them, and my mum said I was never allowed one anyway lol.

    Beautiful course to follow for a HM. The view off to the side around the tunnel was spectacular. Definitely a place I need to get up to and try some running on as I've not ventured up that way much in terms of my running. We've also made moves for similar reasons in the past. Sometimes an area's value can be so overinflated, that moving somewhere else becomes a no-brainer. I would take some light and quick road shoes for the HM race day if I were doing it - looks nice and firm underfoot and probably drains quickly too with that gravel if it were wet. If you've got some that you do a lot of running in and you're used to, they could shave up to a minute off overall time over slightly heavier trail shoes!

    • @markg99
      @markg99 5 днів тому

      Hi Sean. Yes, if you can get over to the Peak District, it's definitely worth it. I haven't done enough running in the peaks, given how close I live to them. Don't go looking for houses there, unless you happen to win the lottery :) Totally with you on the shoe choice. I'm planning to wear my lightweight PUMA racing shoes on the day. I'm just putting a few miles in them first, to get used to them. They fit like a glove to be fair, so should be good.

    Well done mate, another great video as usual. The memories of lost family and friends are always so poignant. Looked like too many people there to say "Good Morning" to everyone. Wife and three daughters! Bet you have to queue for the bathroom(s) in the morning. No wonder you moved to a larger house. Five in my family as well but we just kept adding bathrooms. Now I am alone, I have a choice of three! I remember standing on the Monsal Viaduct with my wife, stepson and two daughters in 1984 and your view brought back a happy memory of the holiday. Good luck with the half, bet you will beat the target.

      Ayup mate! I might have known you'd have been up there when the light were out lol. Glad to hear you're back into the running. Definitely let me know when we can get out and about. Should be good!

    Thanks for taking us on a trip down memory lane Mark. Some stunnig views along that trail and the tunnels were wicked too. I am sure your race will be awesome. As for questions for your Q&A mines very simple.....coke or pepsi? 🤣👍

    Hey Mark, it's an advantage when we can recce a trail race. I love out-and-back courses! Great video. Be careful what you wish for when you tell your audience to fire away with questions lol.

      Hi mate. Yes, the out and back format should be good, especially with it being mostly downhill on the way back, nice and gentle. I'm looking through the questions I've been asked now! Hopefully they've been kind lol

    Hi running vest. I just got one myself, the Solomon Advance Skin 12. I'm starting to run more trails. I got the Alltrails app. Nice trail there Mark.

      Hi mate. I do like this vest. I've only used this one since I got it to replace a cheap one from Amazon. Nice to hear you're doing some trail running. I think I'll be looking at an ultra on the trails again next Spring.

    For your Q&A. I’ve got my first ultra coming up in March, like you I’ve not done a marathon prior to my first ultra. What weekly volume did you do for preparation for your 1st ultra, and what strength & conditioning did you do?

      Hi Billy. Thanks for the question. I'll answer it in the video. I just looked at your channel. Subbed, as I like reading fantasy books myself. Just about to finish the first Mistborn book, and hoping the rest of the series is just as good.

      @@markg99 thanks I’ll look forward to listening to your answer. Mistborns a really good series, I had a very good time with it. The other two books are just as good, if not better than the first one IMO.
