    Roofer is quoting me now on a roof replacement on my 7 year old Lennar home in Texas. They said they use OC Duration shingles but, didn't specify if they were using regular, flex or storm shingles. Should I be concerned which one they're using?

    • @167bustillo

      I wouldn't say concerned as they carry great line of products, but you can obviously see that the duration storm is a stronger Shingle with extra protection with then bottom enforcement. But if you're not in a high hail/storm area you should be good with any line of their products

      Actually, yes that is accurate when it comes to roofing in the winter. When the shingles are first installed, they may appear to have waves or bumps. I put OC Duration, driftwood, on my roof almost 13 years ago. Went through two hurricanes Irma, and recently Ian. I did not have a single shingle blown off, although my home was flooded with a 3 foot storm surge. My only complaint about OC Duration is granule loss. There has been no hail damage, or blistering. However, granule loss is severe. So much so that I don't think it will last 5 more years. This is especially so in the valleys, where the rain runs down and washed washes off the granules. Granule loss is the one thing that keeps me from recommending OC Duration 100%.

      Blistering? Huh? Blistering is extremely circular. Picture someone taking a mini cookie dough cutter and pushing that onto a shingle. You should be able to zoom in and see this is not that. This is either from a hail strike or localized granule loss. Which LGL does appear as hail damage to the untrained eye.

    A shingle might be rated to last 20 or 30 years... but your insurance company makes you get a new roof after 15 years. When I asked them, they said it doesn't matter if it's 3-tab or architectural, they said it's 15 years for both, which I think is BS.

    • @SolVistaRoofing
      @SolVistaRoofing 2 роки тому

      Yes we've found a lot of the insurance companies have rules about the age of the roof. We have also noticed some of those are different than the shingle's rating or expected lifespan. Do you think now is a good time to replace my roof or should I wait till next year for a better price if pay cash ?

      @SolVistaRoofing 2 роки тому

      Based on what we've seen lately, material prices are continuing to increase. So you'll probably pay less if you do it now vs waiting until next year. Never know 100%, prices could level off, but trends indicate more increases are coming.

    Sometimes during installation when you need to cut that duration shingle like in valleys or hips, the fabric strip will come off and it'll be just hanging there ,another thing is that if for some reason you need to repair a roof with duration shingles,you're going to have a hard time removing shingles without damaging them.

    • @SolVistaRoofing
      @SolVistaRoofing 2 роки тому

      Yeah it takes some time and practice cutting the surenail strip without pulling some of it out. Our team has gotten pretty good at this. And we do see dragging when repairing Duration shingles but in our repair jobs they have not been damaged more than other brands. What is your favorite shingle to work with?

      Both you, get cutting shear large snips to literary cut shingles with scissors when low temp and when to warm butterfly blades like old hot guys. Dont cut roof or yourself i use small strip plywood. Repair work done in cold weather only, use flat bar slide angle gently cracking seal strip. Stay thirsty.

    Great video, thanks. Question: Do you have any experience with CertainTeed Arcadia Shake? One company uses this particular shingle, saying they withstand the high winds and rain here in Hawaii, and they also have a solar reflective component. Thanks for any insight you can share on this shingle and any other shingles you would recommend for a house in Hawaii.

      The CT Arcadia Shake is a great shingle. We have high winds in our market (Denver) as well, but this shingle has been out of stock for a while here. For similar premium shingles we have been installing a lot of Certainteed Presidendial shingles which also perform well in high winds.

    What is the cost compared to shingles 2X, 3X, 5X?

    • @SolVistaRoofing
      @SolVistaRoofing 2 роки тому

      It depends on a few different factors. But on average plan for about 2.5x the cost of shingles, and hopefully you can come in under that number. Keep in mind even if it's 2.5x the cost, metal will last 4x-5x as long!
