    To remove the fan, pull the snap ring off one end of the deck height adjusting rod and move the rod aside, it is easy, then you can get to the nut on the fan easily and the belt keeps on the transmission.

      @@billthames9564 it’s really not that bad and doesn’t require very much disassembly . if you get the new belt under the fan started on one side of the pulley under the fan, you can pull it around the pulley. it takes a little effort but it actually will wedge itself between the keeper and the pulley and it can be pulled on . The only pulley I remove is the one from the engine ,and thats the last place I put the belt on. it’s the easiest way I found. no need to remove or mess with that fan.

    Overall good video. My issue was that my belt didn't break and wasn't slipping but had somehow actually jumped off the rear pulley on the transaxle and was between the pulley and the fan. I thought about just breaking the fan off but ended up getting some vice-grip pliers to hold on the pulley and amazingly the rusted nut (that I had soaked in WD40) actually came free! So my tip is to try to get some locking pliers on the pulley and cross your fingers, it might actually work! This was the first issue I've had with the belt in the 10 years I've had this thing.

    Very nice build! Couple of questions…..With this build can you smoke from the grill area into the tower as well as what I would call a hot smoke directly below? Also….ever tried baking in the tower section or a pizza? Thank You

    • @billthames9564
      @billthames9564 Рік тому

      thanks. I've decided to do all my smoking from the BBQ grill into the tower. Just putting a fire into the bottom of the tower was my original thought for smoking, but it's too small of an area for building a fire that will need to go on for 3 or more hours at 230 to 275 degrees. I guess if I was doing one of those "slow smokes" of 205 degrees or thereabouts it might be OK in the tower but would still require a lot of wood replenishment for long hour smokes. No, I've not tried using the tower for a pizza oven - it might work, even though there is no dome shape, per se, above the pizza.

    Just figured out an easy way to remove hydrostatic transmission fan so you can get the belt off much easier. Take out the four bolts that build the body to the axle, put long 5/16 or quarter inch bolts in their place. Put a bottle jack under the trailer hitch Lift the body up in about an inch to an inch and a half and the fan will slide right off of the shaft.

    Years ago while working in Denali National Park some friends and I gathered around a primitive outdoor fire pit lined with basalt stone. After the fire died down that stone retained heat for an amazingly long time. Do you think basalt could be used for a bbq pit? You wouldn't need fire brick for one.

    • @billthames9564
      @billthames9564 Рік тому

      probably so, since basalt makes up a some kinds of lava. however, it is rock-like in shape, as opposed to the formed, rectangular firebrick, which lends itself to being cased inside of a firepit with other dimensional stones, ie., bricks, etc.

      engine oil depends on your area temperature. Here in mid- texas where it rarely gets below 40 degrees, I use 20W40 or 30 weight. wouldn't use synthetic on a brand new engine - needs to break in with regular oil If you are in colder climates , probably want 10W40. wouldn't ever go to a thinner weight in these air cooled engines. On the transmission, I used 75W90 - I think there's a picture of it in the video.
