English Loan Words in Korean - Learn Korean with Kdramas!
This video is an introduction into English loanwords used in Korean, also know as "Konglish" (Korean-style English). Koreans have actually adopted quite a few English words, which can also be written using the Korean alphabet. Some of the most popular words which you've likely heard before are:
파이팅 / 화이팅 [paiting / hwaiting] from the English "Fighting" meaning "Good luck!", Go for it!" or "You can do it!. Note that since Korean doesn't have an "F" sound, they pronounce it as closely as possible which in this case has lead to two different spellings. Although officially the correct spelling is 파이팅 [paiting], the second way 화이팅 [hwaiting] has also become very popular.
콜 [kol] originally from the English poker term "Call" is frequently used in Korean as a sign of agreement meaning "Okay / It's a deal / Let's do it".
오케이 [okei] from the English word "Okay".
커피 [keopi] from the English word "Coffee".
데이트 [deiteu] from the English word "Date", as in to go out romantically with someone.

    My Korean is bad😞 I only knew 2 words... Maybe because I don't watch K-dramas. All my Korean is from Kpop, their talks, their reality series , their live streams and their interviews so it's really minimalistic.. at least I learned more words. thanks! I really want to learn this cool language

    It seems like this word is being used with a negative connotation. Is it the same word that would be used if it was a funny situation instead? 🤭

      Yes, good observation, in Kdramas it's often used in an almost threatening way when said as a question, but it doesn't have to be. Although 웃어 [useo] is the imperative form, the general verb 웃다 [utda] just means "to laugh/smile" and can also just as well be used in a positive sense! 🙂

    • @Learn.Korean.With.Kdramas
      @Learn.Korean.With.Kdramas 7 днів тому

      Well, it's not that straightforward, because Korean has very different sounds many of which don't exist in English at all, it is therefore often simply not possible to write the "correct" way a Korean word should be pronounced using the English alphabet. The Revised Romanization system I use is already the best way to do that, and the official system in Korea. So the best way to know how a word is pronounced is to hear it being spoken by Koreans, which is why I add all the video clips. 🙂

    For me it is funny when for "coffee" they say "copy", is it on purpose, or in the Korean language there is no difference between f and p?

    • @Learn.Korean.With.Kdramas
      @Learn.Korean.With.Kdramas 9 днів тому

      As mentioned in the video, it's because Korean doesn't have an "F" sound, it just doesn't exist in the Korean language. So they can only use the closest sound they have to best convey an English "F", which is ㅍ [p] or sometimes ㅎ [h] as is the case with "paiting/hwaiting" 🙂
