Watercolor Sketchbook Play: Fall and Nature

Realism and Imagination in Art Work
Переглядів 4442 місяці тому
As artists, it's our jobs to edit reality. While painting a portrait, we may improve a flawed complexation. If the composition of a landscape doesn't work, we literally move mountains to make it work, and if needed, we use our imagination to add elements that don't even exist. So, the moral of today's video is the how learning the skill of drawing from your imagination can help you improve as a...

STARS! I love birds also, Reese. I hear when they migrate from north too south they cut through Central Park, but, unfortunately, I don't keep up with the time frame. One fascinating occurrence happened to me a few years back right outside my window. I'm a few stories up from ground level and looking out one day noticed a nest. Was super excited and could see the young ones (3) getting a bit restless. I made sure to not miss the fledglings trying to leave the nest. One time though, after hours of watching for a few days or more, I was so tired and needed to step away, but knew it was almost that time. After resting and then checking the nest - all the fledgling were gone and the nest was empty. I was so disappointed: my heart sank. Being in middle of a bustling city and having this occurrence at so close a vantage point will never experience again. Loved your imaginative work in the journal. I think to try "angels" myself. And, yes, what a coincidence with the stars in the book. Hope 2025 will be propitious in your endeavors with UA-cam and Patreon (spelling ?). 💫🦜

I've heard that about central park. It's easy to get caught up in watching a birds nest. My last home had Carolina wrens nesting on my back porch. It's easy to get emotionally invested. 😌 I hope you try the angels...they have been fun... I'm definitely following my "stars" this year. Thank you for hanging out with me till the end! Wishing you warm and well for these chilly months! Hugs!!! 😊⭐️🖌📚🐦‍⬛

Stars! What a synchronicity to pull out Elizabeth Gilbert's book and find the stars! I love the Finetec gold paints and started a series of mini abstracts in Finetec Gold watercolors combined with various water soluble graphite mediums. I have had Gilbert's book on my to-read since it came out. As you flipped through it, I was inspired to finally read her book. This past year I read Rick Rubin's, The Creative Act, which you would probably enjoy as well! It's full of inspiration and encouragement for all creatives; artists, writers, and musicians. I look forward to seeing where your art journey takes you in 2025🙏🙏🙏

Right? A few things aligned when I started thinking about this mindset. The gold is also very visually fun to play with...and a bit of silver. I bought a set a while ago and just started using them lately. The smell is awful and I feel sick after painting for 10 minutes. I guess I'm one of those sensitive ones. I have a whole set and I just don't know what to do with them… Maybe I can send them back to the retail art store or maybe Richeson will take them back. The smell is really hard to take.

Oh my gosh! Right? It was horrible for me, too. I just have them stored away. The only thing I can think to do is try to use them outside in plein air. I hope you can get them to take them back. I literally have never smelled a worse smelling paint... to me. Maybe some people are more sensitive. Good luck on your return. 😉⚘️🙏

Thank you Reese: love all your videos, but this one was so touching and made me think. You have had in the past videos where you offered your personal views and ideas - a chat- and I hope you will make more of those. By the way, the snowman was too cute: an imaginative idea. Living is the biggest test we will face and it is a tough road to navigate so it is wonderful the way you are planning a road map, so to speak, in finding ways to make not so pleasant episodes in your life a bit more uplifting. I have heard the world and life is sort of a "school" for us adults to grow and advance so we all seem to be on the same trajectory. Wishing that all the good that you put out with art, nature, and being a kind person, which you exude, will be in abundance in the New Year. 🕊

Hi Reese, It was fun to hear the excitement in your voice as you took in the beauty of the fall leaves at your cousin’s home in NC. I can really relate to that type of fall experience. Your detailed approach to depicting the leaves you collected is something to aspire to. Perhaps it’s kind of odd, but I like both very detailed and loosely painted watercolour art. I’m curious about the paintbrush your used in this video. I am frustrated with the lack of firmness in my brushes and watching your video it seemed to me that this might be a good brush for me to have, for the detail and the control. I would appreciate you sharing the details about this brush with me/us or any other brushes you would recommend. Thanks Reese. Have a beautiful day. 🎨🖌Judy

Hi Judy. I thought I mentioned the primary brush was a Trekell Golden Takelon #2 I believe. I love their watercolor brushes. I'll find a couple of my Amazon links... you could add it to your Christmas wish list...it was a lovely time away with my family for sure. I hope you had a lovely holiday!!!

It might be this one....amzn.to/3Vs52If You could buy one brush on their website, though, but s&h are more expensive. I've bought those two packs on Amazon and ones from their website. Those two packs from Amazon are my associate link that supports the channel at no cost to you. They are actually my favorite brushes, but I have all kinds. Cheap and more expensive. I would just find what works best for you. I hope that helped.

Thank you Reese for an relaxing video. Your depiction of foliage is so realistic that for a moment I thought the top large one was the real thing. Do you think you may depict some individual flowers somewhere down the line? Your habit of taking along a sketch book is great in making an instant drawing; your depiction of trees I do love. I have tried it once, but it caused aggravation due to living in Manhattan and having chaos buzzing around me I couldn't fully relax and enjoy myself. For relaxation involving art if I just let go and not be concerned so much with detail and let my imagination take flight - I enjoy making humorous and witty sketches - then I relax and have fun without the aggravation of trying producing something which I feel is great 🌲⛄

Hi! I'm glad you found it relaxing. Thank you for your kind comments. With all the beautiful leaves in Central Park, at least, and all the places you can sit and sketch there, I would think that place at a minimum would not be stressful. If you have seen my field journal, I never strive for accuracy, just a depiction of the feeling of being outside in nature. My leaves, of course, are more accurate. I have done flowers in the past if you go back, a sunflower was fun... Daisies too. I'm sure I will at somepoint again. I am a fan of the imagination work too so I believe just taking time to artistically express yourself is the most important thing. I hope you have a lovely holiday season. Stay warm!!! 😊⛄️❄️🖋📚

Thanks for sharing your lovely leaf paintings. I also paint as a form of meditation. I do not like to paint seasonal themed art as that just adds to the stress! I find during the holiday season that I encounter a self-imposed dry spell of content to watch from the artists I follow, as many want to paint seasonal themed subjects. Just not interested in that. I guess many artists with UA-cam channels think their followers want seasonal content-maybe most do, but not me. So thanks for the lovely nature themed content!

I completely understand, Christina. Not all of us have a similar experience or feelings about holiday content. That said, it's not as if I've never done that. I enjoy a bit of holiday and often doodle something like that at some point for myself. However, my real joy about this time of year is the cooler weather and seasonal changes that nature provides. The cozy, hibernation and maybe feeling a bit more connected to the earth at this time of year. Nature, as a subject, is certainly calming and medatative. I'm so glad you enjoyed today's video. I always appreciate your thoughtful comments. Have a beautiful week. 🙏🖋📚🍁

Dream: Hi Reese and thank you for taking the time for another informative video. And, yes, it is a great learning tool to use one's imagination. I used to recreate master copies in the past and got pretty bored with the idea and now I create everything through my imagination and love it. Your previous showing of the ink sketch book was super. I love the way your work is so well thought out and with such precision and accuracy along with creativity. It inspires me to devote more time to creating an art journal. Do you find yourself drawing and creating in your sketch book more of a spontaneous thing or do you set time aside for it? If I don't pick up pencil and paper just when I have the mood to create it soon after dissipates. By the way, your video wasn't too long seeing that you have moved to every other week it could be even a tad longer; but, of course, you are busy with other responsibilities. 🎨🖌

Hi there! Thank you for a well thought out comment and for all the compliments. I never think of my work as well thought out, to be honest. The inktober book had a theme and that helped. I definitely don't schedule time. Instead one or two sketchbooks are always near me. Even when i go to work, I carry at least one for lunchtime play. At home the sketchbook can be doodled in with a pencil. I can do that with ease from my imagination. Sketching from life is more difficult, outside, still life, or portrait, or even a master's study, takes more organization and time, so that's harder to find time for. I love landscapes, but Florida is sooo hot. I hope that helps. I appreciate your support and encouragement. 📚🖋🍁🍂🙏

Thank you for watching till the end, Cristina. Yes, you are right. I just didn't have the time. Andrew's work is a plethora of stories. I think that is partially what draws me to his work on top of the draftmanship. I would love to do a video talking about that one day. Thanks for hanging out with me! ☺️🖋📚🍁🍂🙏
