I had forgotten all about the cooling fans on the motors, drove me spotty. I started out by fitting quieter fans, unimpressed. Then I added thermal switches to the fan wiring, wrapped the switches in shrink wrap for insulation and then wedged them in to the motor cooling vanes. If either motor every passes 30 centigrade then the fan will come on, not happened yet 😁 Robin
@robinhewitt6273 G'day Robin. Thanks for your comments they are appreciated. I was told that a manual switch was fitted into the circuit, so they just switched it off. The problem with that is you don't know the temp of the motor etc.
I am fixing up much the same machine sold as the Warco HV mill in the UK. A toy for my retirement. I put a Bridgeport style crank on the Z, same as you, and I have a nod error, same as you only mine is bigger, about .0055" and goes the other way. The other big problem I had was that they had wired it so one VFD was driving 2 motors through a mass of wiring and at least 5 contactors. It was already dying when it arrived. I fitted 2 new VFD's and emptied out the control box. All good fun 😁 best regards and have fun, Robin
@robinhewitt6273 G'day Robin. Thanks for your comments, always greatly appreciated. I had the Electrition wire both of the Power Feeds to the same contacts as the X . I made sure that they were moving in the correct way, before final installation. I also showed how I worked out the stop limiters for correct fitment for the stops. Admittingly, I use one power feed at a time, so I switch off the others when using one of them. They can be fun with modifications 😆, but in the end it's worth it. @paularbon1093 Hi Paul. I hope I was able to answer a lot of your questions. The variable speed is a Great tool as you can see, with many applications on how to use it, whether on a Lathe or Milling Machine.
I bolted- welded mine to the 6x4 shed beam lol .

I have a very similar mill from Hafco. the biggest problem with them is the lack of a forward/back tilting cutting head. You can only tilt it sideways. This is apparent if you look at the head adjustments in this video. This really is the only downfall of what is otherwise a very handy milling machine.
@andretorben9995 Hello Andre. Thanks for your comments. You are right in the forward & back tilt of the Head. This is why I mentioned the shimming of the Head assembly for tramming. If you have a look through my channel, I go through tramming & other modifications that I have made, to improve an already good machine. I took time tramming my mill, & attained 0 degrees on all alignments.
@@TedRoza Hi, Yes I had to also shim mine as it was slightly off level to the bed. A few shims and its fine. I have had a few jobs to do where I needed the fwd/back tilt which would have worked great with the cross feed power feed. I had to take the jobs to a friends workshop.
@andretorben9995 why couldn't you shim or plate the job on an angle or do it on the X travel

G'day Tom. Always a pleasure hearing from you. The mill is slowly getting there, so I hope I did it justice with the Review. The 4 part series on fitting & modifying for fitment the Z & Y Power Feeds is getting a lot of emails etc as well.
Gday Ted nice thorough review, I also have the HM54GV mill which I bought around 8 years ago, the horizontal function is definitely a cool feature to have. I have also fitted a power feed to the Z axis which was not an easy job. And I put a switch on that cooling fan as it only needs to be running while the spindle is going. The only complaint I have is on my DRO the PCD function does not work, sadly I didn't discover this until after the warranty had run out. All in all though I think it's a very good machine and will suit my needs for years to come.
@D40.. G'day D40. Thanks for your comments. I really appreciate it. I'm glad you have had a good run with your mill, I will look into the Fan Switc, and to be honest, I never thought of that. I will have to think about it when the warranty runs out. You should get in touch with HAFCO about the PCD. They've got a reputation for service and repair assistance after the warranty has run out,.

I'm envious! Question: What is the "Spindle Adjustment" ?
@zoltannagy1813 G'day Zoltan. Thanks for your question. The Spindle adjustment is to adjust Spindle Barings in the virticle movement, if to much slack or virticle movement is present it can give you chatter or other problems when trying to mill a flat surface in the X & Y procedure. Also it can effect Your Virticle Tramming to Perpendicular to the Table. Hope this helps.
Great review Ted. I have the AL346 lathe, and only occasionally think I should have gone for the AL356 that you have. For my first mill, I went with MH28V, and much more often think I should have gone with a bigger mill. At some point I'll probably upgrade, and the HM54GV seems like a good candidate.
@gafaff Thanks for your Input, All comments are welcome. The HM-54GV is an excellent Mill. Also the 346 is a good Lathe, but I found with the 356 8" chucks, & 51mm Spindle with the D1-5 cam lock & 4MT tailstock, is a lot better. When you get time go through my UA-cam channel, & you will find info on Mods you can do to improve your. Mill etc
Excellent review Ted, many thanks. What a pity there is no 'nod' adjustment on the head and you have had to shim it. It's the same on my HM 46 mill, except you have to shim the whole column, but I suppose it's built to a price.
@kenwheeler-do9ov G'day Ken. Thanks for your comments. At least once you have shimmed it, You know you have it trammed in properly. With the column shimming, long as you the shim the left right first, then forward backward, then you will have a good Zero tram.
I have just purchased one of these myself. Do you have any other modifications in mind. Like folding handles, additional lighting, or work holding fixtures.
@DeanBateman G'day Dean. Thanks for your comments, I decided against folding handles on Y & X, because in some situations like pinpointing a drill spot or something that you have to get close to, the folding handle seem to disappear if know what I mean. If you have a look through my UA-cam channel you will see the modifications I have made, including a detailed fitting the Y & Z Power Feeds. The other modification I'll be doing is fitting a small DRO on the Spindle.
That’s a really good thorough review Ted & covers everything about the mill very well. Anyone doing their research on what mill to buy - will get a heap of very valuable information on the HM54GV Mill & all of its functions & capabilities. It’s a shame Hafco haven’t put out as thorough video reviews on either there AL356V (14x40) Lathe or this HM54GV mill, as what you have done in your two reviews. As you correctly point out, they are a well matched pair of machines for a home shop, both single phase, and within realms of affordability for the average guy. Congratulations on all your efforts, & take my hat off to you for all the work you have put in to get yourself so well set up in your home machine shop. It’s been quite the journey, when you look right back to the start videos on your channel - extending your shop build etc, to where you are at now. Keep up the good work. 👍

lookin good, I put folding handles on my hand wheels to avoid belly stabs when reaching the table. Later from Texas.
@fredboat G'day Fred. Thanks for your input. I thought of folding handles, but found the X & Y were ok the Z I removed the spring & removed the handle, because my knees would brush on it. Only takes a second to put it on, wind up or down, otherwise I use the Power Feed.

@ginaanastas3851 Hi There. The AL-356 is an Excellent lathe supporting a 52mm Spindle which is an ideal size. Couple with the 8" chucks with a D1-5 lock system, which make it a good size to work with. There are tons of Great Specifications, which makes it an Excellent all round Lathe to work with. I highly recommend this size Lathe. Mine is a single phase or 240v, which suits my needs quite well. There is a 3 phase version 440v, but not necessary for my application. I Recomend you fit adjustable feet = pads & level the Lathe correctly before final use. Hopes this helps you. Ted

G'day. Thanks for your question & comments. You will love your new Mill. Wind the head assembly backwards as far as it will travel & add about 30 cm to allow 180 degree turn for when you decide to use the extender on the Horizontal Spindle. As far as the X table leave at least 1/2 meter each side when table is fully extended left & right to give you working clearance. Hope this helps. Keep an eye out for new modifications I'm making.

Excellent build Ted. I've made up something similar with casters under base with jacking screws outboard from casters. I have one of those hare & forbes rongfu column mill drills. Are are bloody heavy.
@robjaimiehickford4559 G'day Rob. Thanks for commenting. I thought about the casters but decided not to, even though I can still fit them. The tramming & levelling turned out well. The Rong Fu weights are about 600 kilos, so yep, put a bit of strain on an engine lifter.

when you run out of adjustment using that engagement method you can move the pinion in or out to engage on the wall of the curved driven gear. Are the old R8 spindles on these mills hollow where a drawbar would be used on the MT3 spindle ?
Hi there. My Rf30, has always had a 3MT from new. I have made R8 insert mandrels for Bridgeports, but never delved into R8 for for RF30. It has got a certain sized tube or hollow inside the spindle to accommodate the draw bar of which I have used different draw bars up to about 13mm or 1/2", where you can feel the threads touching as the drawbar goes down. Hope this answers your question.

I think I’m having a problem with my mill where I think the quill is hopping up and down. I’m getting a lot of vibration and I’m tying everything down that I can, but flycutting right now is pretty scary. lol
G'day. Thanks for your Input & question. First you need to check make sure you have minimal backlash on your fine feed on the quill. Check out my video on the Quill Modification. Also in some cases you need to slightly preload the quil when using fly cutter or endmill etc If you are still having problems you will need to possibly first try to tightness the top quill nuts, where the draw bar is. If that is ok, then you might have to fit New Spindle Barings with shims etc. Hope this helps a bit.
Also vibration is very dependant on the speed you trying to mill at. Try lowering the speed to decrease vibration.

@@TedRoza That 2" bore is nice. My 13x40 lathe only has a 1 9/16 bore so basically anything over 1.5" won't go thru.
I have the AL346V, a little smaller. but a very capable lathe. The variable speed drive on these machines is a vector style, which is excellent at maintaining speed as it comes under load. One common "mod" is to adjust the brake setting on the drive to get a faster chuck stopping action that's closer to a mechanical brake, handy when threading up to a shoulder.

Awesome review thank you Ted. Learned a few new things about my new lathe, especially the saddle lock & how the speeds & feeds selections work, which as you well know from our frantic discussions on my end, had me totally bamboozled. 😂 I can see myself returning to this well done review multiple times in future as I come to grips with setting / selecting feeds & speeds. It’s always handy to have a review like this to refer back to, to refresh the memory from time to time. I was re-watching your carriage stop video only last night & thinking that it might well have to be one of my first projects, just for the protection factor that it affords. If you still have the diagram / plan I would appreciate a copy immensely please? I have seen online there’s a few others looking at the AL356V as a potential purchase who will no doubt find this invaluable as well. I’m glad you took the time to make this more detailed review,because you have had a year of actual use to figure all this stuff out, which was why my vid was only an “overview” not a review because I haven’t owned mine or used it at all long enough to give a detailed user review as you have done here. Between us we at least might be adding to the corpus of knowledge on UA-cam about this specific model which has been sadly lacking up to now. Thanks sincerely for your top effort. Exactly what I did to mine- had about 1/2 a rev of play - elongated the top hole and got the play down to less than 1/4 rev
