A SAPPHIRE Costume | Making a Drag Costume!
Here is a run through of the costume I made for Ottawa drag queen, Sophia Sapphire! The theme for the costume was blues and rhinestones (hence the queen's name lol).
There was a lot that went into the harnessing and small pattern pieces for the shapes of the base of the costume. I tried to show some of it in the video, but I didn't want to make the video too long. If you have any questions about how I went about it or any steps in the process, leave a comment below!
I hope you enjoy the video :)

Making a DRAG Costume | First Costume

I was lucky enough to get a chance to make something for one of Canada's best drag queens, Kimmy Couture! This was my first time making a complete costume and I wanted to share how it came together. It's a silver satin 2 piece with a matching jacket, and buckled halter. I've been commissioned for a handful more costumes since so I'll definitely be doing more videos like this. If you have any su...

I DIY'ed a pair of "harem" pants! If you are unfamiliar with the type of pant, it's a very loose fitting, drop crotch, jogger styled pant usually made with a really light weight stretchy fabric. It's my first time making a pair of more lounge wear styled pants and they are SO comfy! Hope you enjoy the video of how they came together :) You can also follow along on: instagram: wyat...

    Mina Gerges is a designer with an interesting pattern making process. He wraps himself in shrink wrap and duct tape, almost creating a very tight cast of his body shape. He cuts it off and creates his pattern from this, his pieces end up fitting really nicely.

    Hey there. Just a quick thought to throw at you. Technically, said Harem Pants, could be strongly argued, came straight out of Ancient Persia. The more appropriate name would be, "Hareem Pants". The pockets for said pants were along the sides of the legs. As pickpocketing was quite prevalent.

    OMG I just started my Sherpa jacket yesterday. Today I am taking a break. Something every one should do before starting one. Watch as many videos as possible even before you decide on a pattern. Watch them all the way through. Buy a little extra fabric cause you will need to practice,practice practice.(I did'nt:(.)Try not to short cut or skip any steps. Get in touch with your emotions for your serger. And Unique the only advice I can give you after such a GREAT tutorial is press your paper pattern and it won't rollup on you. THANK YOU SO MUCH. Tomorrow I'm going back in:)

    Where'd you get the liner from? I can't find one

    • @uniquecollective

      I got it from a local store called Fabricland! A lot of different fabrics could work for a liner though depending on how you want it to look and feel :)

    I am struggling finding the right type of knit fabric to use as a lining. Can you telll me what you used? Also, pointers on finishing button holes and collar would be much appreciated.

    • @uniquecollective
      @uniquecollective 2 роки тому

      Hmm I don't remember the exact fabric I'm sorry! It wasn't anything special though, just a patterned knit with a little bit of stretch. Things I would consider are: - Will it create a lot of static taking it on and off? - Will the fabric "grab" my clothes, or bunch up sliding the sleeves on and off? - Will the colour stain or show dirt easily? I had to do the button holes by hand because the fabric was too thick for my machine. So my only advice is to be patient and really reinforce it so it doesn't start to open up and show the filling of the jacket. For the collar, make sure you don't "dip down" too low with the neck hole on the back pieces. When I made my pattern, I went a bit too low, and the collar doesn't quite stand perfectly at the back. It's a small thing but hope it helps :)

      I'm not sure if I'll make a video that specific, but my most recent video (ua-cam.com/video/hYirp5ATjYM/v-deo.html) has some alterations on it specifically with something that is a bit too big. Here are 2 ways you can go about it in mind: 1. The "proper" way would be to measure how much you want removed, seam rip/disassemble, cut the pieces to be smaller, and then reassemble. 2. The way I would probably do it (and the way I did it in my most recent video), would be to put the pants on, pinch the fabric to see how much you want taken away, pin it from the inside with the extra fabric inside the garment (not outside of it), sew across the pins, and then cut away the excess. Feel free to DM me on instagram if you want to chat through it more :)

    Great video. Love your pattern making skills. That's one of my goals once I advance my basic sewing skills to the next level. I'm assuming that you got the body measurements you needed before you started making your pattern pieces. I've always wanted to try my hand at making an opulent, over-the-top drag costume, but I don't know any drag queens and I'm a little intimidated by some of the fabrics which can be difficult to sew.

    • @uniquecollective
      @uniquecollective 2 роки тому

      Thank you! Yes I did get the measurements before jumping into the pattern making. Honestly, just go for it! Depending on where you live, there are probably local drag queens or cosplay folks and they are ALWAYS looking for new stuff. If you're too nervous to reach out to people, you can always just make yourself something as practice. It's fun to make yourself something extravagant and you don't have to wear it out of the house if you don't want to lol. Costumes don't need to be as polished as every day clothing so it's actually more accessible to try than you think!

    I'm a big guy (6'5" and 240#s). It's so hard to find these kinds of unique pieces in my size. I don't own a sewing machine. But after years of buying run-of-the-mill clothing at big and tall stores, I think it's time to invest in a sewing machine and learn how to make interesting pieces that fit me. I have a very talented friend who is extremely tall and she can go into a store, look at a dress or a suit, make a few mental notes, then go home, and create the exact same piece so that it fits her. To me, it's like a superpower. I am VERY impressed with what you put together. I want a "teddy bear" coat, such as the one you created. The only thing I have at my house that might help with patterning is a very large bathrobe. But it has the right shape and I think it could be used to create a pattern. I think I live a bit further south than you. I have had a sherpa hoodie that I ended up giving away because it was SO HOT--even in the winter. If I learn how to sew, I think I would omit the batting inside the coat. Thanks for sharing your video--for showing that garments are very complex. It makes me appreciate the work that goes into all of the clothing that I wear.
