Why Sell the Call side of a Strangle?
Tom Sosnoff and Tony Battista discuss the pros and cons of selling the Call side of a naked Strangle. The Put side has clearly performed much better over the past 20 years. Should we bother to sell the Call side as well? They conclude that is indeed a good idea to sell the Call side, even in a bull market.

    Buddy your using the wrong mower for your size property. You office workers have no clue on how to do things. Dewalt products are shit to begin with, you my friend need a ride on lawnmower for that property and keep that little trimmer to cut the corners you can't get into with your ride on. Put your wife to work cutting the edges of tight areas and you cut the rest with the ride on mower. We both know she could lose a little bit of weight.

      @@lookingthroughice7843 You make some valid points! To be fair, the mower is advertised as suitable for lawns up to 20,000 square feet, and I'm way under that. Since I posted this video, I learned to just stagger the 3 cuts, and take a break in between, and it all works out fine. There are always trade-offs, just like driving an electric car or using a heat pump to heat my house (which I also do). I do like getting the extra steps in, so I'm happy with walking the yard while mowing quietly.

    With 3 batteries and a fast charger: One mows while one cools and one charges. Might want to throw a 6 or 9AH FlexVolt into the mix. The 6AH is what they like to bundle with smaller FV tools. 9AH hits harder (higher current cells) and can often be found on sale.

    20V Max is DeWALT’s standard 18 volt tool/battery line… basically DeWALT’s version of Milwaukee’s M18 tool/battery line. “FlexVolt” is called that because it works in 56 volt “60V Max” FlexVolt tools and existing 20V Max tools. It supports both voltages. Yes, DeWALT deliberately names it after the maximum voltage instead of the nominal voltage for marketing purposes. They aren’t allowed to do this in some countries which is why you might see the same tools and batteries called “18V Max” and “56V Max.” This is DeWALT’s first FlexVolt mower, which is why it only needs one 56 volt battery. The older 2x 20V Max mowers needed two 18 volt batteries to make 36 volts and they did not perform very well. 56v>36v

      @@jamiez9847 Yes, you are correct with your multiplication. However, on Aug 5th, I took profits much sooner...more like 10x on my long /ES Puts. It worked out pretty well that day. I closed about half of my longs in /ES, and left the other half on in case we crashed further (which we didn't). Another thing I learned that day was that the bid/ask spreads in /MES options were really wide and it was very difficult to deal with those. So I ended up just ignoring the /MES part of my trade (let it go to max loss) and just cashed in on the long /ES Puts. That's what I would do in the future as well.

    I think the bad fill issue is due to setting a market stop of the single sold option. @canadianoptionstrader One more question for you. I am setting this up just like you did, and I am curious what your typical theta drag on each tranche is? I am using the TOS analysis tab to consider how many tranches I would need to offset my unhedged 112 positions, each is usually about $25-$35 +theta, and this trade appears to be around $15-$20 -theta? Is that correct, I understand these analysis tabs arent always accurate? If so this may create a considerable cash drag if I open several of these at once. Curious what your experience is opening the trade and observing over time? I am opening the trade to take in a bit more credit than I am spending on the long put but understand they all dont decay at the same rate... I've been trying to enter a new tranche of the DrZ BSH on a down day when SPY or /ES is down at least 1%. Each time I enter a new tranche, I try to pick a different expiration. By coincidence, I entered a new tranche last Friday and it was up big on Monday. I closed about half of my tranches for a small profit on Monday, and then left the rest on, in case we kept crashing more. But when we didn't crash further, those ones I left on ended up losing all their profit very quickly. So overall, it ended up working pretty well. Hey man, I, like many, got screwed on Volmageddon 2024…almost exclusively because of the 112 trades I had on. I immediately began experimenting with a legit hedge, and long story short, yesterday I settled on what I think is called a Back Ratio Put Spread. If I sell -1 Put and then buy +4 Puts much farther OTM making the trade a small debit, it seemingly gives a similar profit curve as your version. That said, I like your version a lot too, and I just might steal it, ha. Guess I should run my 1-4 Ratio Spread through Tasty’s backtesting tool see the difference. Sounds like you made some money on Monday, which is basically the only selling point someone should need. Thanks for sharing! 👍

Each time I enter a new tranche, I try to pick a different expiration. This trade was definitely profitable on Monday August 5th, 2024! The trick on that day was to close some of my tranches as quickly as I could (while they were winning big). I see you're commenting below about entering new tranches on down days. Isn't that the opposite of what you'd normally want to do, since you're probably buying longs at (somewhat) juiced prices on down days, and they're just going to decay most of the time? And it would be more difficult to be profitable on the longs if you bought them at higher prices to begin with? FWIW I've been using this hedge and it helped a pretty good deal this past week, but I held on waiting for the market to dump even more, when I should've taken profits when I had the chance. Definitely going to be putting on tranches of this more often myself moving forward.

    • @CanadianOptionsTrader
      @CanadianOptionsTrader Місяць тому

      In my opinion, I want to take advantage of the elevated premium that I'm selling with the short Put spread. This is the part of the trade that pays for my hedge (the long 1Δ Put). So I'm thinking that the 30Δ Put will be elevated more than the 1Δ on a down day. So I want to enter the whole trade on a down day. Then, if we don't crash, I end up breaking even, but if we crash, the 1Δ Put kicks in more strongly than the short Put spread. This is what I observed happening in real time on Monday. The short Put Spread went to max loss (it's defined risk) and the remaining 1Δ Put became exponentially more profitable as volatility spiked very quickly.

      @CanadianOptionsTrader 2 місяці тому

      Lately, I've been trying to enter a new tranche of my DrZ BSH on a down day, when SPY or /ES is down at least 1% ( I back-tested this recently). Each time I enter a new tranche, I try to pick a different expiration. By coincidence, I entered a new tranche last Friday, and it was up big on Monday. I closed a bunch of my tranches on Monday (when they were up big) and I kept the rest on, in case we crashed further. So, it performed great! But the lesson I learned is that there was a narrow window to take the winner(s). Anything I closed on Monday morning ended up winning, and anything I left until Tuesday ended up breaking even. It was the rare volatility spike that made the trade profitable, so once the volatility gets crushed after the event, the profit disappears. I did ok this time, but I could have acted more quickly (to close more winners).

      @@herbzerden1535 Hi Herb! Yes, the new part is that I only enter the trade on a down day. I backtested the trade, and specified to enter the trade only when SPY is down 1% or more. The backtest shows that it loses a little bit over a long period of time, but then it spikes up huge (wins a lot) in the very rare occurnece of an actual crash. I plan to make a video about this soon!

    Canada is one of the worst place to be a trader. Margin s*cks and the financial industry is lobbying like crazy to avoid aggressive players (like TT) to enter "their" market. It is like the communication industry in Canada. Really, really bad! Then, we complain about low productivity. Well, why in the world would you spend money to innovate when the governments (at all levels) are protecting your @ss?

    Some people seem to not realize that this is more about being able to use the tools that Tasty has developped than anything else. IBKR is a fine broker as far as having order filled and allowing me to do the trades I want but it is also insanely clunky and is not geared towards applying the trade mechanics that tasty puts forward.

    In my opinion you are using the wrong type of mower for that size yard...unless you have more than 2 batteries. You definitely need a gas mower, preferably a riding mower. But, I do like your review. Thank You!

    Webull, Wealthsimple etc did it, So did Interactive Brokers. Unfortunately, they lost the battle. Most of us aren't going to switch platforms, even if they get approved, unless the offer is exceptionally aggressive, which I doubt they'll be able to provide.

    Your complaint with the batteries is the same complaint that everyone has with these mowers. The mowers themselves are great, but people don't have realistic expectations with respect to the batteries. When you are buying electric power tools these days you are not investing in the tool, you are investing in the battery system. It only really makes sense to buy a certain brand of tools if you are also buying those batteries. All of my power tools are DeWalt, and I have their first generation mower, which I run on a pair of 9Ah Flexvolts which is usually sufficient. However, if I run out all I have to do is go into my garage and grab another bunch of batteries to finish the job. Dewalt has no idea what the size of your yard is when they sell the mower, so it's really not fair for you to give the system a thumbs down on the runtime because your yard is probably bigger than average. It's really no different than complaining about running out of gas with an ICE mower. Go buy more gas, or go buy another battery, and your complaints disappear. To be fair, when DeWalt first sold their first gen mower, they packaged it with a pair of 5Ah batteries which was wholly insufficient for all but the smallest lawns. It should have come with larger ones, but they only came out with 20V high capacity batteries lately. Running on Flexvolts, the thing does my lawn and my neighbor's on one charge as long as the grass isn't too long or wet. I love the thing, but I wish the bag was a little bigger in capacity, and that it was powered. Thanks for the review, I've been eager to see how these new powered ones are doing to see about upgrading in the future.

      @CanadianOptionsTrader 2 місяці тому

      Ok, thanks! You make great points! It's definitely been a learning experience for me. To be fair, the mower is advertised as suitable for lawns up to 20,000 square feet. Since I posted this video, I learned to just stagger the 3 cuts, and take a break in between, so there is extra time for the 1st battery to charge. It all works out fine if I'm able to adapt to the battery capacity and performance. There are always trade-offs, just like driving an electric car or using a heat pump to heat my house (which I do).

      Also it is good to remember that batteries and chargers play simple math games. A 12Ah battery plug into 4Ah charger takes three (3) hours to charge (12/4=3). Get 8Ah or 12Ah charger. Last, all 20V tools works with the 60v/20v flex batteries but 60V tool will not work with a 20v battery, there is extra active pin in the 60v mode to make sure of it.
