This is an oily rag restoration channel featuring vintage tools and equipment. There will also be small engined machines and any other things I can get my hands on, this may include vehicles or related items. I also tinker with vintage, and some more modern, airguns.I'm an amateur and will be doing the restorations as a hobby, videos are not intended to be tutorial or instructional,.

These were a couple of chisels I had in a previous tool haul and I decided that it was time to get them back into working order. Excuse the poor sharpening skills!!!!

Vintage wrench restoration

This wrench belonged to my dad and came to me in quite a state. He's not been able to use many of his tools for a long time and was having a clear out. It's a tool that I grew up seeing in his garage and deserves saving. #vintagetools #vintagewrench #toolrestoration

Nice job!
@@357magdad thank you sir😁👍🏻
Both turned out, really nice. Well done.
@@_BigLife_ cheers😁👍🏻
Cool Vid stumbled into you because of George- Subbed up today hope to p[lay catch up on vids.
Good old George, I'll return the favour and check out yours too. Cheers👍🏻
Very nice, You can never have enough bottle openers.
Ain't that the truth😁👍🏻
Great job on bringing these beauties back! Should work just fine.
Thanks, I'm looking into getting a better honing tool, more novice based, for my skill set(non existent!). Think I could improve the sharpening quite a bit.
Great job! I gotta make myself a "Dad's Bits and Bobs Tin"! 😊😊😊
Thanks, think I need a another shed for all my bits & bobs. Why is there never enough room?!😁
@Bloodshed.restorations My son and I are going to a motorcycle swap meet today. He is hoping to find some parts he needs for a 80cc Yamaha Dirt bike project he has. I am just hoping to see some cool stuff and have a good time.
@@timeflysintheshop will you be filming any of it? I'm jealous, enjoy yourselves 👍🏻
@Bloodshed.restorations I don't know. My camera is not ideal for that sort of filming. The video is wobbly and it is not a wide enough angle to see stuff in that sort of setting. If there are some extra cool things to see, I might be able to get my son to film with his new phone. The problem is that he never gives me anything I ask him to film. We went to a demo derby and he filmed it with his phone, but.... He filmed things he worked on like the jeep, but.... It is frustrating, so I will say a solid maybe!
Very nice job on the chisels. They look great.
@@TheKidFromYTown cheers, still got far too many projects left!!!😁
@@Bloodshed.restorations 🤓👍
Nice Alex! Love those chisels. Very satisfying restoration. They looked like they were getting the job done just fine. Take care and keep warm.
@@Uwannawatch cheers mate, been sorting the shed out and found a Footprint screwdriver that I'd previously restored! I need to take atockmof what I've got, a Footprint video is also in the pipeline, not just wrenches, I hope🤞🏻, if we survive the oncoming storm that is forecast, I'm off to baton down the hatches😂
They look great Alex. Those old wood handled chisels are fun to bring back to life. Nicely done
@@ivanstiles7030 cheers, I need to practice my woodwork skills a lot more than I do, just need a few more hours in the day to get there😁
Good stuff Alex! Nice save of the quality steel and vintage handles. For working hand tools, nothing beats the feel of a wooden handle taken care of with boiled linseed oil and waxed. 👍
@@MattsGarage1791 I think I've become addicted to the wax smell now, better get a bulb order put in! 😂
Nice work Alex. That Marple must be a little old.. They look very good and should serve you for a long time. Stay warm and safe.
@@Dalesworkshop I've been hoarding chisels for some while now, not sure why thought. Once I've got better at sharpening I'll have a go at thd better ones.
@@Bloodshed.restorations I too have collected many chisels of all sizes and I don't know why either. When you perfect the sharpening procedure please let me know.
I think you might be waiting long time, I can get them to a decent level of sharpness but not ro the point of shaving with! Guess we have to make do with what we've got 😁
I had no idea what you were doing at first. This has to be one of the best things I've seen in a while. Very cool.
To be honest I never have much of an idea about what I'm doing 😁. It was an enjoyable little project, one of the few that my wife actually likes and wants in the house. Cheers👍🏻
Nicely done. I love how all of them cleaned up.
I love wood and brass, you may have noticed! These wooden levels are a particular favourite though.
Great video. I absolutely enjoyed your response to the challenge. New follower.
@@_BigLife_ Cheers, like your challenge entry too, it was a good challenge from George. Look forward to seeing more on your channel too👍🏻
My clock is really loud, makes a tick tok sound when the eyes move from side to side. I have tried the wd40 but it didn’t do anything.
Alex, I just found your channel recently and enjoying it so far! It's really nice to learn a little about you as a person, you seem like a solid, grounded person. Great to meet you and keep the content coming!
Thanks, appreciate it. We all try our best with our channels and positive feedback is always great 👍🏻. I'll get round to checking out your channel soon too.
Mine is very loud, mainly the eyes making so much "clang" sound. I tried WD40 and silicon oil but none work. Any tips?
@@DivinePudding133 that sounds odd, not heard anything about that before. Are the little clips that hold the eyes in place still there/intact? It could only be one of a few things if the noise is eye related, maybe the pendulum? I replaced the pendulum because it had cracked and was cheap(ish) at £13 from the Kit cat website.
@@Bloodshed.restorationsmine is noisy too! Tried all the tricks but the eyes moving is where the noise is coming from.
@@everydaylifewithbecca have you removed the eyes? If not, could be a build up of dust causing friction, they are held in with plastic clips, which can wear, apparently.
@@Bloodshed.restorations I got mine brand new this December, I attempted to clean it and do a lot of little "improvements" by removing the eyes and cleaning it with silicone oil and WD40 but nothing seems to work. Kinda sucks because these clocks look so cool but unfortunately require a lot of maintaining.
@DivinePudding133 we had similar with our first one, we sent it back and got a replacement. Still have issues with it but manage to keep it going. Good luck

I have always enjoyed your channel Alex. Its good to know a little about you, If I ever get to England again I will look you up.Im glad you have found your happy place. It will give you more time to to camping hopefully, I will put up a video soon Thanks for calling me out. Take care of your self and stay warm and happy.
@@Dalesworkshop I goes both ways, my friend. Still so much to do on the van and the crap weather doesn't help but we're hopefully planning another trip to Cornwall again, so the van should get some action for a couple of nights 🤞🏻
I like Rammstein. I like music in general. I haven't listened to them lately but two of their songs that are my favorites are Du Hast and Amerika. I like that one music video by Nina Hagen - Naturträne. Sigur Rós is a band from Reykjavík, Iceland that has a few songs I like. I like some of Die Antwoord from South Africa. I started listening to Mike Oldfield back in the early 70's when I went to the movies to see The Exorcist and they played the intro of Tubular Bells. Oh, and Kate Bush. Seen her on Saturday Night Live back in the late 70's and bought her album The Kick Inside. I like Laura Grove, Johnny Cash, Teresa Brewer, Camel, Klaatu, Kansas, The Beatles, Styx, Stones. Actually, it's an endless list. Oh, Metallica. I like their song Nothing Else Matters. Another band called Apoptygma Berzerk did a cover of this song. They did an extended version that I really like. Cool video. Nice to get to know you. Happy George recommended your channel.
Du hast is the wife's favourite, it's one of mine too. You have a varied taste of music, same here, I just like what I like and a good tune is a good tune, no matter who writes it. My biggest issue is with modern singers butchering classic songs, knocking that a lot of the modern generation haven't heard them but each to their own I guess😁
@@Bloodshed.restorations 🤓👍
Thanks for doing this Alex, I didn't know you like Metallica! That's awesome! Good for you for getting away from the toxic workplace. Sounds like you are a lot happier now. Take it easy Brother I'll catch up with ya later.
@@Uwannawatch it was a really good thing to do, cheaper than therapy too😂. Yes, 80's & 90's rock/metal are my thing but I still like some pop stuff too. If you like it, you like it. Take it easy👍🏻
Thanks for sharing man.. you got a great Channel .. keep it up man looking forward to other videos..

Crocky definitely did not want to be shiny! Both the pump and the bottle opener came out really nice!

@@HoneyMarketingBoard hi, pretty straightforward but definitely make sure it's bled through a few times. Mines been fantastic since I did it👍🏻
Very cool Alex! Wood and Brass are a stunning combo, Crocky has a bad attitude must be the cold weather. I like that grease pump too! Excellent work Brother! Thank you for joining in! Take care and stay warm.
Nicely done! 😃👍
Thanks, it was a great challenge. I do love a bit of brass in the shed!
What a creative project! It came out great Alex!
Cheers👍🏻, it should get quite a bit of use too!😁
That's a great idea Alex. Nicely done. Can't beat those second hand thrift store cutting boards for wood projects.
@@ivanstiles7030 cheers, the wood wasn't the best quality but pretty good for the price. A coat of gun stock oil certainly improved things too.
Hello Alex. Fantastic idea. I love the Grease pump and the bottle opener is top shelf stuff. Great entry my friend. Oh and the handle you made is a fine job.
@@Dalesworkshop Hi there, shiny and practical was the way forward on this one. The handle was OK, halfway through a bit split so I couldn't get the profile I was after but I'm pleased with it. Love using the lathe, even if it is only a cheap and basic one. Have a good week, my friend.
An interesting idea and a good implementation.
@@Dr.Pepperovsky thank you, kind sir👍🏻
Hey there Alex! Love all of the wood handle tools just hanging around your shop 👍Totally agree - shiny brass and wood are are great marriage. Definitely classy brassy Alex! You took the challenge to a whole new level with that bottle opener - fantastic!!
@@MattsGarage1791 hey Matt, this was definitely a good challenge and really got me thinking. I'm halfway through reorganising the shed to fit more tools on the wall, seems a shame to keep them hidden away. Think I might do another opener with the othe half of the punch, make a great Christmas/birthday present for someone.
That bottle opener is top shelf! Great idea and project!
@@bigvicsworkshop the punch already had the damage and it just came to me that it looked a bit like a bottle opener and the rest is history. Wish I more of these ideas, could have been a millionaire by now!😂
Came over from George's channel, looking forward to seeing more! Thanks for sharing.
Hi, thanks. I'll check out your channel too. I do all sorts of projects, tools are my main bread and butter though👍🏻
Worst clocks ever. But thank u for the video.
They do take some maintenance, that's for sure!
Hey Alex! Great job! Drilling a pin is always stressful, but when you get it out nice, it feels like victory! Stay warm! You could use your little stove to keep a hot drink warm out there.
@@timeflysintheshop Hi there, the pin went a lot better than I expected, which I was pleased about, that wrench was going to work no matter what! We've now broken the minus temperatures but it has been a little chilly! 🥶🥶🥶 I'm currently working on George's brass challenge, trying to go down a different route with that one. Hope you're keeping well?
@@Bloodshed.restorations It has been sub freezing here for about two weeks now, but today it came just up to freezing. Yea I started a brass project too.
It might be cool to heat the unpolished part and oil treat it. Making it darker and protect it from more pitting or rust.
Yes, that would work well too. I did that on parts of an old Beatrice parafin stove a couple of videos ago and has worked well but I do love doing the bluing treatments, just have to make sure it's given plenty of oil every so often. 👍🏻
Fantastic work Alex! I love how it came out ! Stellar job on the pin! Looks pretty cold there stay warm Brother!
@@Uwannawatch thanks mate, it's not the king of weather to be in a shed for any length of time. Think I need to get myself a vintage heater of some kind to keep the old bones from freezing up! Could be a good project too🤔. The joys of having a tiny shed!
I like the idea of leaving the iteigerty of the natural look of the wrench. It looks good. Nice job on the pin replacement. I see it is cold in the shop, so stay warm .
@@Dalesworkshop I do quite like the pitted look of it as it's always looked like that, as far back as I can remember. In fact, it's never been a good looking wrench! It's brass monkeys at the moment, not much shed time going on. I should have insulated it when it was empty. You live and learn!
Splendid Alex! There's many levels of restorations - from just a good cleaning and polishing, to a complete tear-down, rebuild and refinish. Being able to remove the old pin and fabricate a new one to restore your dad's old tool to useable condition again is priceless! And it looks like it received just the right amount of polishing( still retains its well earned history yet looks freshly cleaned ). 👍
@@MattsGarage1791 thanks Matt, I'm really happy but I must concentrate on getting that lathe sorted out, it will make restorations much easier. Gave me a reason to the old pillar drill, love that old beast.
Lookin' good! Nice job remaking the pin!
@@357magdad I'm really pleased with the Heath Robinson approach and quicker than sorting my lathe out.its the shed man way😁
That looks great Alex. My father passed away almost 2 years ago and I've been restoring/preserving a lot of his old tools to hang in my shop so i can see them and use them when I'm in the shop that way he's out there with me. Nicely done sir
@@ivanstiles7030 cheers, I'm trying to hoard any of his old tools before the inevitable happens. He's very old and doddery now and a bit confused but so am I most of the time!😁
@Bloodshed.restorations best to do it while he's still with you. My dad passed away unexpectedly and I inherited his tools after he was gone but i have so many memories of him teaching me to use his tools when I was a child. I will always cherish those memories and everything he taught me.
@@ivanstiles7030 I agree, a lot of my memories of him in years gone by are him being a grumpy sod but I learnt a lot from him. We've become much closer in later years. You never realise how much parents do for you when you were young, then you become parents and realise how ungrateful kids can be! Sure I was the perfect example of a child though😂
Struggling with my own piston seal - really doing my head in!
@@XX629-Bulldog have you managed to replace it?
@ frustratingly not yet - just running through my mind how much to trim it.
@XX629-Bulldog I had to do some trimming on some of the seals I fitted. The piston seal took some bedding in, I probably should have put a new spring in too but my plans are to take it apart just to check the piston seal is smoothing off. I think the replacement ones are a bit thick. Good luck
@ thanks. I’ve got a new spring too. Just got to pluck up the courage to trim the seal. Slowly slowly, can’t add back!!!
I've also found that rubbing leather seals with a 400 grit wet and dry sand paper helps to smooth them off a bit too.
