Can videogames let you experience an indescribable concept like infinity? Kant called the experience of infinity ‘the sublime’ and I will analyse depictions of infinity from across the world in relation to his theory. Kant thought that sublimity was felt while viewing vast expanses like mountains, or powerful events like thunderstorms. Kant thought that these experiences are pleasurable overall because they reveal the power of humanity to conceive of the idea of infinity, showing how human reasoning is distinct from, and superior to the natural world. Kant's theory is rooted in western philosophical traditions that emphasize individualism and the separation of mind and nature. Coinciding with the development of the scientific method, linear perspective allowed for a systematic approach to representing the world. Both linear perspective and the scientific method reinforce a distinction between the observer (the human mind) and the observed (nature). I suggest that the infinite spaces in Manifold Garden alone may not grant a holistic experience of infinity, because their use of perspective creates a false sense of separation between humanity and nature. I believe we only feel this separation because we cannot see time.
While linear perspective allows for the depiction of an infinite space, non-Western artworks depict an eternity of time. Non-Western depictions of infinity represent progressively repeating cycles, and humanity interconnected with nature. I believe that while our experience of space and our rational minds make us feel different from infinity, our experience of time shows how connected we are to eternity. Scientist Sarah Walker says that the universe is much larger in time than space, and the interconnectivity of humanity and nature is one of the largest things in it. Time is constantly bifurcating and its generating new structures, this is the concept of phylogeny. While we can’t see time, we feel its effects in the complex integration of life and technology on this planet. I think this accounts for our rational minds being equal to infinity, but also for our interconnectivity with nature and the universe.
Manifold Garden uses perspective to depict infinity vast spaces, however its gameplay symbolises the interconnectivity of humanity and nature over time. The player is tasked with completing puzzles to bring life to a geometric world, unifying architecture and nature. This symbolises the interconnectivity of humanity and the universe, a global metaphor which connects us in time. All artworks show us the power of human creativity, but videogames are unique. In Manifold Garden, your actions directly impact its world, as you use the power of your mental faculty to change the spaces over time. I believe that the source of sublimity in an artwork is due to it showing the vastness of the human experience in time, this is experienced in Manifold Garden as you use your human creativity to solve puzzles. The power of human reason brings life and vibrancy to the brutal landscape. In the same way, I think that humanity brings meaning to the universe. The power of our creations can bring life to the future, so in a sense we are eternal.

@@ryanbenedick9164 yes of course! How can I share it with you?
@@ryanbenedick9164 (I just followed the Convai UA-cam tutorials btw so you might only need to watch that)
@@bencrawshaw3D Ah that's what it reminded me of. I watched it last month and started going down the rabbit hole but after a few things broke, I started to get lost and never came back to it. The URL to the project overview page (where it has buttons for Editor/Play/Fork) would be ideal.
Manifold garden is peak, one of my all time favorite games
@@p-raven yesss I think so too
I just found your channel through this video and stumbled upon your "wild space" series. I absolutely love it. Clearly an insane amount of work has gone into it. I'm honestly baffled almost nobody seems to have seen it. What a hidden gem. Also thank you for this video. Manifold garden is such a beautiful game. I remember being immediately captivated by the trailer and its unique aesthetic. The development of the game is surprisingly well documented on William chyr's channel and blog. His dev streams and blog entries going back to when the project was still called relativity are a treasure trove for anyone interested in game development
Hey! That’s amazing I’m so glad you like you wild space! I do it with friends and it takes us years to make an episode. There’s a new one coming out soon on it’s own channel. Yeah it’s a really fascinating game with concepts and creative problem solving. I wanted to include the stuff about why he changed the name but couldn’t fit it all in.
I tried to reply but I think it got removed because it had a link to the wild space channel in it. Rest assured, I found it. I personally like the decidedly non-clickbait thumbnails, but I'm afraid they will not work for people not already familiar with the series. You can't tell what kind of video it is, so new people won't know if they would be interested. You have a memorable art style and a very creative animation technique, but I would never know from just the thumbnails, which is a shame. Have you considered using something more in line with the thumbnails on this channel, maybe with the title superimposed?
@ hey!!! Nice to hear from you. I hope you don’t mind but I sent a screenshot of your comment to my friends. We’re really proud of the next episode so would actually like it to get views and we’ve been trying to think of how to get the thumbnail and titles working. I couldn’t agree with you more, I think people will look at the thumbnail and think the entire video is just a drawing. We could even put the word ‘animation’ in there there somewhere. UA-cam is a funny business because what feels tasteful is rarely what people actually click on ahaha. Thanks for your comments though it really brightens my day :)
I don't mind at all. It is kind of exciting to find a real hidden gem and I would love for you to succeed. I'm no expert in UA-cam marketing but it may be helpful to look what works for others as inspiration. There is a channel called Righteous Robot for example. He also does animations with paper, seems quite successful and the thumbnails seem eye-catching but quite tasteful. The word 'animation' on the thumbnail itself is maybe overkill and takes away valuable space, but it could be part of the title. It might also be a good idea to add a description; a bit of information about the project and maybe some credits. This is not only helpful for viewers but might also help the algorithm categorize the video and show it to people interested in similar videos
@@qwqeqrqtqzYeah I think I’ve seen righteous robot before, they mentioned that it’s a short film in the title which I think we could do. Adding a description and some hashtags would also definitely help. I also saw that they post content like ‘making a cowboy stop motion film (out of paper) and I think people would be as much interested in that as the final output. I think the fact that we make it out of paper is more interesting than the fact that it’s a badly acted space adventure
I swear to God that talented devs gets less attention
Ahahah that you that means so much! I haven’t been doing this very long so maybe the attention is around the corner
Pretty cool vídeo, loved the philosophy references
