How Hamburg Forged The Beatles
In this deep dive, I explore how Hamburg became the crucible where the Beatles transformed from a scrappy Liverpool band into global music legends. From their early days as The Quarrymen and the Silver Beatles to their grueling residencies in Hamburg’s Indra Club, Kaiserkeller, and Star-Club, this video unveils the pivotal moments that shaped their sound and forged their identity.
Learn about their chaotic adventures, including run-ins with the law, living in squalor at the Bambi Kino, and the infamous "condom incident." Discover the key relationships they built with figures like Astrid Kirchherr and Klaus Voormann, and how their experiences on Hamburg’s wild Reeperbahn molded them into the polished performers who would later conquer the world.
Finally, I’ll explore the legacy of this transformative period, from the moment they stepped back onto British soil-forever changed.

Drawing from the BBC 1995 adaptation, I explore how her actions refl...

When you showed the clip with Darcy and Wickhams portraits that made me wonder where those paintings are now and who painted them. Someone had to have been paid to actually paint those portraits, since you couldn't just CGI it then. I wonder which Pride & Prejudice super fan has that huge portrait of Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy in their living room lol.
Yeah it’s interesting to wonder where those little cameo paintings might be. The national trust person at Sudbury Hall informed me that the large portrait of Darcy was given to Colin Firth’s mother 👍
I've always thought he'd have been more suited in character and interests to Mary.
Loving these P&P deep dives! Benjamin Whitrow is so wonderfully understated, but so perfect in his portrayal; like Alison Steadman as Mrs. Bennet. I think both actors really understood the complexity of their characters, which one appreciates more with each viewing (and with every re-read of the novel.) My father has read and enjoyed Austen, but it was interesting to the women in our house how much more...severe? I guess...his estimation of Mr. Bennet was. As a husband and father he found Mr. Bennet more frustrating than we did (while loving the novel as a whole.)
2005 pride & prejudice heyy. Best adaptation, I said it.
🤣
What fun this video was. You're an entertaining host.
Thanks very much 🙏
I never noticed 1995 Mary was sweet on Collins until you showed it. In 2005 it's obvious.
Not only the family of a country squire faced these kinds of social and financial pressures. There were titled families whose estates were in financial straits due to mismanagement, gambling, and the like. The mothers in those families were desperate for their sons to marry wealthy debutantes or heiresses, or for their daughters to marry wealthy gentlemen. I think Darcy eventually made that comparison himself when coming to terms with Mrs. Bennet's behavior.
I completely agree with your opinions 😃 I've always felt Colin Firth was ideal to portray Mr Darcy... he says so much with his eyes. He almost starts off with quite a stern look in his eyes that makes the viewer think that he is prejudice but as the series goes on, we see more depth and a gentler and funny side to him. Towards the end, his eyes glow as he's looking at Lizzy. He's in love ❤ He doesn't even need to smile... you can see from his eyes what he's thinking 😊 Thank you for your wonderful videos.
Thank you, loved it👏❣️
You’re welcome 😊
I always felt the scene where Mr Darcy is walking down the hall after his conversation with Caroline was a reaction of finally speaking the truth out loud of his affection for lizzy and not being embarrassed about it anymore. Like a sense of relief that he is being honest with himself about his feelings. 💜
The kids have a word for Mr. Collins, that word is "cringe". David Bamber is one of the best character actors of his generation.
He portrays Mr Collins perfectly.
These explications are so enjoyable and appreciated. I’ve long held that Mrs. Bennett is the most overlooked character in P&P for all the reasons you state. It takes an ability to empathize, or, in a literary perspective, reading between the lines. What caught my mind when first studying this book, was what I felt the disagreeableness of Mr. Bennett’s using logic and sarcasm against his wife’s efforts, to keep himself out of the fray. . .and allow himself the isolation to brood about his failings. Mrs Bennett never had such luxury, particularly with the awareness she had about the financial situation. She might flail but by golly she confronted the problem, and after didn’t let her husband’s coldness freeze her into depression or worse. Brilliant mind that wrote all those characters, for sure! Thank you again for this episode and series. Am enjoying it.
Thank you for watching and adding a comment. I'll be honest that I make these videos based on my own perceptions/observations of the characters - especially as they are portrayed, but some commentators do provide alternative understandings but that's all part of the fun I guess 👍
If Mr. Wickham knew he was a half sibling to Mr. Darcy (outright opposed by the text which says he is the son of the late Mr. Darcy’s steward) then the attempted elopement with Georgiana would have been beyond a breech of trust but also incestuous. I don’t think suspecting Mr. Darcy’s father of also being the father of Mr. Wickham is supported by the text. It is clear that Mr. Darcy”s father, an excellent father by Mr. Darcy’s account and “the best master” by the housekeeper’s account, was a separate person from the well described steward who fathered Mr. Wickham.
Yeah it’s definitely a stretch to even imagine the scenario and I’m sure if Jane Austen omitted it from the story then it’s even more likely to not be the case.
I've watched it dozens of times as it helps me go to sleep by watching few minutes at the time, whenever my mind is too busy. I also have watched the other 5 versions, going back to 1956, pus sone excerpts from the Duch, Italian, and German versions! Of course, I also listened to the book. I noticed the mistake of not telling her father about Darcy's intervention. It only takes one extra minute! It was best done in the 2005 movie. Of my odd observations, no touching hands without gloves, or kissing, but it does happen once when he comes upon her while she was crying, and held her hand. Thank you for the post.
You forgot Wickham’s engagement to Miss King in pursuit of her 12 thousand.
Ah yes that happened didn’t it!
I disagree with the Darcy walking around his house with the candle. It has nothing to do with Bingley. Listen to the background music. It’s what Lizzy played. He’s reliving her reactions and his own realization that she’s good and kind, and is the one he wants. The music gives it away.
So basically Mrs. Bennett is the only "adult" in the room regarding the situation her family is in.
It's one of the best period movies ever
Great Video Tudor… really enjoy the way you present Beatle facts … Look forward to your next one …. 👍
Many thanks!
You should watch Pride and Prejudice: A Latter-Day Comedy (2003). The sisters are updated to college roommates. Mary has a prominent role and gets a love story of her own.
I’ve not heard of that. Is it a modern interpretation or is it also a costume drama?
Austen shows us with Wickham that indulging a child all his life without holding him accountable for his actions or behavior leads to the spoiling of his character. Reading the book, or watching the '95 production, I can never understand how Elizabeth got duped. Jane, however, withheld judgement till she heard more of the story.
I’ve realised recently that my husband is Mr Darcy. Aloof, socially awkward but excelling in integrity and overall goodness. His fortune may be somewhat lacking, but after 27 years he’s still the love of my life. ❤
Another great video Tudor, the Hamburg years were the hardcore years. The Hamburg tapes were rough and ready. But they sounded fantastic. Shame you ran out of time, fingers crossed you get back. Looking forward to the next video. All the best..kev.
Thanks Kev. I’d love to get back there one day 👍
Hi!! Do you know anyone in London who does this same tour to turists or some othrr complete tour like this? (Without being Richard Porter). Thanks!!!
Unfortunately I don’t know of any London tours. From memory Richard Porter is a bit of an authority on the Beatles in London.
@@TudorSmith thanks Tudor!. Can I ask you how long did it take to visit all the places you showed in the 3 videos of Beatles Tour?.
Thankfully with the Beatles videos, I planned and then filmed each one on the same day. In other words, I didn't need to go back to London to do additional filming for the specific videos. So, each video shot in a single day. 😉
without getting too deep about the nuances, Darcy has the pride (snooty) and Lizzie has the prejudice (against snooty people that think they're better than her.) That's why Lizzie tells her dad Darcy has no IMPROPER pride. Yeah, he's a proud guy, and it turns out it's well deserved (in contrast to Caroline for example).
Lizzie is confused yet flattered when he asks her to meet Georgiana
Stuart Sutcliffe was the first member of the Beatles that Ringo met in Hamburg.
Another wonderful video on The Fabs!!! I love the little details, like the drop T you used in the titles. Thank you again for putting together and sharing another fab video.
A Beatles video has been a long time coming I must admit but it was enjoyable researching and putting it together 👍 I’m glad you enjoyed it. 😊
Very nicely done Tudor, with a few photos I've never seen before, which is always a bit of a thrill. One of these, the picture of Brian at The Cavern (09:49) shows, I'm pretty sure, Lionel Bart (writer/composer of Oliver!, Fings Ain't What They Used to Be etc.) left front.
Lionel Bart eh? Brian did mix with the best of them - he seemed to have the contacts.
@TudorSmith I've since additionally learned that the thick set man with curlyish hair is the writer of A Hard Day's Night, Alun Owen.
Just to add Billy Preston was a key musician on George's Dark Horse and 33 1/3 album-- you can hear him on tracks like Maya Love and This Song. He was also an important part of George's Dark Horse tour and helped support George onstage and he would play at George's memorial concert (and of course he appeared at the Concert for Bangladesh). George would also co produce two albums on Apple for Billy (That's the way God Planned it and Encouraging Words)
Excellent overview of the life of my favourite Beatle and one of my favourite humans ever!
I had a new found admiration for him after making that video 👍
Terrific vlog. Thank you for pointing out the importance of Astrid Kirchherr in forming the band's image and Klaus Voormann
Those chance meetings with Astrid & Klaus were so important. I saw a video on YT about Klaus making an album with collaborations from Paul & Ringo and it was lovely to see the love they had for one another. Truely a long lasting friendship formed in Hamburg 👍
🇬🇧 Why is Caroline Bingley kindly disposed to Elizabeth Bennett in the early stages, when, surely she would have seen Lizzy as a rival for Darcy's attention early on ?
Caroline never thought that someone who was so much lower than she considered herself to be could be a rival... at first...
Elizabeth had those fine eyes. Caroline possibly couldn't compete with that! 😉
@@purcascade Yes, I understand . Excellent reply
Great video mate. There was a VHS I had in the mid 80s called The Complete Beatles. And on it, was an interview with Gerry Marsden, from Gerry & The Pacemakers. Who said that "Hamburg made you, if you had what it took to be good, otherwise you just packed in and went home." I don't think there's any doubt of the apprenticeship that they and lots of Merseybeat groups served in the nightclubs of Hamburg. Sadly, that kind of experience is missing from today's wanna be stars. Playing long gruelling hours perfecting your craft, enlarging your repertoire can only be a positive thing. Hard to think that after them Hamburg days, the longest they'd play together live was less than half an hour.
Yeah those future gigs I guess were part of the “package” they’d become (a manufactured band?) but they didn’t loose their artistic flair did they? McCartney sure made up for it in his later years performing 2 hr gigs 👍
@@TudorSmith It might seem a little controversial to say it. But I feel Paul McCartney; certainly over the last 30 years, has become his own tribute band. I mean, some of his latest albums haven't been bad. But don't we all wanna hear him sing Can't Buy Me Love, Hey Jude, Let It Be, Band On The Run
I guess with such a vast catalogue he has so much to offer but I often wonder if people attending the concerts want to relive their old favourite songs with the original artist performing them. I dropped off the McCartney band wagon after Flaming Pie - now that could be considered controversial 🤷♂️
🇬🇧 Lydia trips as she enters the carriage, this is mentioned in the text. So beautifully accurate. An excellent recording of Pride and Prejudice by ' Get Sleepy' on utube. Read at a slower pace. Why are some recordings read at such speed. All nuances lost.
I'm so glad I stumbled on this, or rather this was suggested for me. I try to watch the series as a treat after a busy holiday season in order to unwind and relax. I too noticed the background this time of Lydia and Kitty in town with the soldiers for the first time. Great camera work too. I do think that Mr. Darcy's little smile when meeting Lizzy on her way to see her ill sister, is actually his thinking that she is refreshing and spunky. She would seem to be very different than the two women lined up to marry him. Thank you for this video. How fun!
Always enjoy your "fab" Beatle videos!
Cheers!
A brilliant insight I visited Hamburg and met many fans ,they certainly learnt their craft there ,thanks Tudor enjoyed .👌
Oh I so agree with you about her not telling her father about Darcy’s actions. It was a big disappointment to me at the time. I really wanted to see her father’s reaction.
And Jennifer and Colin we’re falling love in real life. ❤️
I watch this over and over again. The best programme ever, ever. The casting is superb. Every time I see the film version with Kiera Knightly doing her simpering smile I cringe. Colin Firth will never be beaten as Mr Darcy.
💯
Today Wickham would be considered a sociopath and possibly a pedofile. Interesting that Jane Austen understands a charming and manipulative character such as Wickham long before Freud came around. As to Wickham’s elopement with lydia it was a major problem for parents and single girls in the day. An unscrupulous man would charm a girl, then talk her into eloping to get married. Frequently the marriage would be performed by a fake minister. The family would then have to lay out big sums of money to get their daughter back. The daughter, especially if she got pregnant, would end up in some out of the way farmhouse for the rest of her life. (As in Mansfield Park). In this case Wickham just dragged Lydia along to have a sex partner since he still plans to make an advantageous marriage elsewhere.
Yet again, another fab video!!
Yay, thank you!
Thanks for the heads up on the 'Let The Good Times Roll' book. Just ordered it on Amazon.
Let me know what you think about the book. I fancy reading it too 👍
@TudorSmith I will 😉
I managed to visit Tony Sheridan's "grave" on one occasion. I will be there again in July and intend to visit Gibson Kemp's bar.
Despite being from Merseyside, I completely agree that the Beatles as we know them, were forged in Hamburg. I love Hamburg and if I could travel back in time and see the Beatles live, this is the period I would choose.
It would have been interesting to see them at the very start - especially with two different drummers eh? Pete Best obviously had something to be able to run with the Hamburg gigs as well as the period between them too! What a blast they must have had 👍
How do you only have 13K subscribers. I think your videos are brilliant. I watched this one months ago and am rewatching now.
I guess people watch but don’t subscribe! But I’m happy that people at least watch the videos 👍
We went to Hamburg in October specifically to visit those Hamburg Beatles locations ❤
I’m sorry I missed them when I was there back in October. I will make it back one day soon 👍
@ we were on a cruise, my husband got v excited when I mentioned we were stopping hamburg for the day
Mr Bennet ruminates on his failure to save money but if you calculate that he could have saved $100 a year out of 2000 pounds generated from the estate, by the end of 20 years he would only have saved 2000 pounds. Divided between 5 daughters, each girl would only receive an additional 400 pounds. Not much of an improvement.
True. But he could have given it to Jane and hoped she could help out the rest in society. 🤷♀
Darcy’s friendship with Bingley is perhaps the first sign of his true character. If he was really all that proud, he wouldn’t hang around with a guy whose family got their fortune from the dreaded “trade.” 😀. When I first read P&P (50 years ago) I was really miffed when JA revealed that Darcy was actually a good guy.
