    If your big box store has a panel cutter I would get them to cut the sheet in half or thirds to make the job easier. I wouldn't have them cut it up into strips....because they'll start charging you for each cut. Which kinda defeats the purpose. I.e. saving us money.

    I need a brutally honest answer....if I use MDF for my baseboards and I prime and paint both sides of the boards will I have to worry about it swelling down the line?? I only ask because I'd love to use MDF as it's very affordable compared to wood or fingerjoint stock. I'm just really worried about it swelling. Thanks 😊

      Keep liquid water away from it and it won't swell. I had Mdf baseboard for decades in my house and they never swelled.

    • @number1pappy
      @number1pappy Рік тому

      @Weekend Warrior thanks for the response, but after thinking about it for a while, we chose to go with the more expensive wood trim. Considering we were ordering enough trim to do the whole house going with MDF would have saved us hundreds of dollars, but we just didn't want to take the risk.

    • @weekendwarrior3420
      @weekendwarrior3420 Рік тому

      @@number1pappy Yes MDF is cheaper but works fine as long as you don't wet or damage it - you have to know your situation.

    This guy is correct on the shellac primer it does make the difference’ It’s $50 a gal but use cheap paint and cheap primer and u get shit results 100% of the time! I used to say nah $20 a gallon for paint is good enough’ Yah…. It not at all! Not only does it usually take 2x the paint for coverage cheap paint all around is trash! I’m a cheapo and was like no way I’m spending $50 a gal on paint! World of difference night and day! Just wait until there’s a coupon at sherwin Williams’ everyone has an opinion but real world experience a menards / Home Depot paint sucks compared to Williams’ I’ve used all and hands down Williams! At $50-60 a gal on paint spend the extra $4-5 and get a paint sample paint looks different in your house than it does at the store! Yes it might cost $200-300 on paint but think of it this way…. It’s something u will look at everyday for the next 5+ years so spend the money do it right! Use cheap shit and u will spend the next 5 years looking at it hating it! These are all tips I wish someone would have told me when I stared learning’ I wasted a lot ALOT of time and money “finding out the hard way” He said it 2x primer makes a difference yea it does! Also DO NOT USE water based primer! I made that mistake water based makes mdf swell like a sponge! It HAS TO BE OIL BASED PRIMER! I made my own and if I can give anyone advice just buy it! By the time u waste 20 hours making them and make the biggest mess possible mdf is nasty nasty dust! U won’t save money once u buy the primer’ U did a great job man But wow it’s so much bigger than ppl think!

      Thanks for your ideas! Could you recommend a specific type of primer (exact name)? After so many attempts to find contractors and failing I decided to remodel my house myself. I used to be a carpenter while paying my way through college but I discovered a whole new world of tools and techniques that didn’t exist before. So I bought a lot of power tools and equipment so I can do almost everything to my house. After the first project I more than paid for the dozen tools and equipment! So the equipment is paid for and I can use them on all the remaining projects. When I finish remodeling I can always resell a lot of the tools and recoup a lot of that expense. Thanks again for your detailed tips. If you could provide a great lacquer based primer I really would appreciate it! All the best on the projects you’re working on.

This by far has been the BEST video I've seen...that slide is simple...Yet brilliant!! Thank You SO much. I'm 5'6" not weak by any means, 🤓 though pushing that type of wood thru the table saw is something I haven't even thought of!?!? Thanks Again! God Bless!

      Coming from someone that bought a house 2 years ago and thought it was a good idea to tear every room baseboard / door trim and trim and kitchen apart’ Let me give u advice! It’s not like on tv there’s 100 of them and 1 of u’ Do 1 room at a time’ I promise u u will thank me’ Also coming from me thinking it would be a good idea to “save money” I made all my door casing and base boards’ I bought many many sheets of 1/2”osb’ Listen to me! JUST BUY IT! making it is so much more than u ever think’ The saw dust alone and mess it makes from ripping 10 plus sheets is a mess! Took 3 hours to clean that up and it goes everywhere like dust! 2nd u have to sand the cut sides so there’s no lines’ Add 4 hours for that’ Priming! #1 mistake made with mdf YOU CAN NOT REPEAT CAN NOT use water based primer! It will make your boards swell like a sponge’ U have to use oil based primer! That will take 2-3 coats trust me it sucks up so much and took me about 4 gallons total’ for oil based Killz primer it was $50 a gallon! Add about 6 hours total for all coats also roller no matter how “smooth” it claims will leave orange peel texture spray gun is key if u do it! Water based is 20 a gal don’t fn do it! Has to be oil based! Now after u prime u have to sand again smooth then wipe off’ Now all in you’re looking at a good 20 hours and I only had to do 1500 sq foot’ Trust me bro’ trying to help! Yes primed trim is expensive and while it seems like u will save money I promise u won’t’ by the time u buy that primer u won’t save’ Cheapest oil primer is like $30 a gal and cheap primer/ cheap paint = shit results every time! Just buy it! U go from the store go home cut it and install and be done! Cut other costs like painting bedroom doors instead of replacing’ I give u my word u will thank me for said advice if u fail to listen to me and do it’ LoL hands down I would have bought it if I could do it again’ I’ve leaned from all my mistakes I’ve remodeled my entire house and it took 2 years and guess what I’m still not done! 🤣 1 room at a time my friend! Hoping my advice helps at least 1 person! Also think of the area u r in’ If average / med income area don’t put 100k in “upgrades” it will not increase your homes value’ U would be making it nicer than the other houses’ but at the end of the day “hypothetically” said person is still in a med income neighborhood and that’s where prices stay’ I learned that the hard way! Some things increase value yes but don’t “over update things” Take care bro hope that helps But trust me trust me trust me! Go buy that trim don’t do it!

    Thank you for your review. I would have liked to see a close up of your finished product to see how the paint flowed. I am currently replacing all the builder grade baseboard and door casings in my home to a wide flat faced trim. I want a show room finish. I am using BM Advance paint which is a self leveling but very finicky paint. I had some decent luck using a mohair mini roller but lately something just isn't working and I am beyond frustrated. I am just a homeowner and not a professional. I've decided to give spraying a try for the 2nd time (first time I tried I had a hot mess on my hands). I think I am leaning towards this Wagner because they claim that smaller cup/spray nozzle is for fine finishes. That's why I would have liked to see how your project turned out. You said you got a light orange peel and that is not acceptable for me. But you said you used the larger cup which if I am understanding correctly is just for all general painting purposes. I am wondering if the smaller cup/fine nozzle sprayer will truly give this amateur a factory smooth finish.

    Can you complete prime and top coat before installing? Then caulk + touch up nail holes? This way there’s no cutting in or masking

    • @joshymcdaniel9233
      @joshymcdaniel9233 2 роки тому

      Yes u can Jarrod and I advise u to do just that! Especially if u have carpet now trying to tape / paint when they r installed is a nightmare! Also use a brad nailer 2” brad nails mark stud locations b4 u install makes it so much easier! Don’t over do it on nails 1-2 nails max at each stud Once u caulk it isn’t going anywhere! Most guys shoot 5k nails in it and by the time u fill the holes u ruined your pretty paint job! Bonus tip! Put painters tape on baseboard BEFORE u nail it! Leave the tape after u brad nail now u can fill holes then remove tape and not ruin your paint job’ By putting tape on b4 u nail you are left with a tiny hole in the tape so when u fill hole it makes it so much easier! Then peel tape off and all that extra filler comes off with the tape’

In researching today it seems that’s for stain? I’m gonna throw some paint in it tomorrow and see what happens!? Just curious your thoughts? And experience with the bigger one. I’m a TOTAL newbie 😂
