This Might Be the Strangest Place to Catch a Trout in Tennessee

      @yakfishin4912 we have quite a few anglers make the drive up to Tellico Plains from ATL. It's a little under 3hrs. The Hiwassee is another good option at about 2 1/2hrs. Other than license sales which I know generates $$, why put stockers over viable trout populations? Doesn’t that hurt the wild fish numbers, and dilute their genetics?

    • @tellicooutfitters8989
      @tellicooutfitters8989 29 днів тому

      That's a great question and one that we think about often. Stocking on the Tellico River began many decades ago after the logging industry left the area when the river was not what it is now, and wasn't able to support the wild trout numbers that is does today. The Tellico River still has a robust stocking program and is probably the most popular stocked river in the state, so it's highly unlikely that the stocking program will ever be cut because of its popularity and the revenue it produces for the area. All of the wild trout populations in the Tellico are descendants of these stocked fish, so it's not likely that genetics are being diluted by the stocked fish which share the same lineage. Most likely the stocked fish do compete with the existing wild fish for food, but the impact of this competition isn't clear, since the Tellico seems to have the same population densities and size profiles of wild trout as other streams in the area that do not receive stocking.

    • @tellicooutfitters8989
