I've been searching for this for years. At 35:47 minutes in, my dear Grandad Jimmy Harrison. I've not heard his voice for a very long time. He sadly passed away in October 1998. He told me the very same story. I miss you grandad ❤❤

Martin's Bank is in WATER Street - the Grasshopper - NOT 'locust' - was the symbol of the London based Martin's which was taken over by The Bank of Liverpool in 1918. It was the only national bank based outside of London.

Frank started off well crushing some of the myths. Then he created some of his own. 1) King john did NOT invent the name 'Liverpool' but the derivation of Lava/Lyver + Pool is correct. 2) The Pool was not situated in Old Haymarket, the creek of the pool did stretch along Paradise Street and Whitechapel but the pool was where we find 'Liverpool One' / Chavasse Park and the remains of the 'Salthouse Dock' under this development is the 'enclosed' pool. The Liverpool Castle overlooked the Pool the position being Derby Square. 3) There is no 'Roman Street Plan' in Liverpool - I have no idea what he thinks he means by this - the Seven Streets are a perfect example of medieaval street vernacular, they arose from the practical connection to the river led to the higher ground and then extended into the Moores properties from - Bank-Water Street to Dale Street and Chapel Streer extended to Tithebarn Street with a lane off the junction of these to their hall, as Old Hall Street. Castle Street led from this group to the pool and castle. 4) The wind through the 'wide Roman streets' blowing the plague away is nonsense, the plague was caused by rat fleas biting people and stopped at the level of the natural immunity of the reduced population. 5) Huskisson was not run over at Edge Hill Station , but a third of the way down the line at the then Parkside station near Newton le Willows, there is in fact a large monument on the embankment at that point to him. He was on the same train as Wellington and the trains on both tracks were heading to Manchester when there was a halt for boiler water. Huskisson, got off his carriage and ran forward to greet Wellington and was run over by the Rocket which was on the other track.

Very well done documentary. Today in society people complain too much. Look what people went through in the war for years not knowing if you were going to live each day or night, which one of your neighbours were going to get bombed or injured. This doc serves as a reminder to stay humble count your blessings even if they are few help thy neighbour too. RIP to all who perished 🙏

Grew up on Brookvale and went to “Brookvale comprehensive” school in the 70’s. Moved to Runcorn in 1975 and I remember it was all pretty new and clean and well looked after. Went back last week (September 2024) after having moved away for 40yrs and so so different. All the trees massively overgrown as back in the day they were mere small saplings. Many of the houses look rundown and a very different feel. I was saddened but grateful I was there when it was all new. I think things started changing in the early 80’s during the thatcher years and especially Shopping city, can’t believe what it’s like now. 🙁

I was born in Liverpool at the start of the war, my father had been called up quickly, because he had a driving licence, my mother had gone back to her mothers, ( nearer the docks ) because she was about to have me, how all mothers in Liverpool, not only survived, but fed us on very meagre rations, WITHOUT any social security or National health service. They were all wonderwomen

The Shopping City is a hell hole. Shops all long gone nothing worth going there fore. Buckets all over the floors as ceiling leaks. You are stranded here as the escalaters are always bust. One was bust foe 2 years fixes & bust again. A hell of a staiway 3 layers of em to get to shopping level. Lifts always bust. Why dont they renew the filthy dirty escalaters that are permanently bust with new ones that dont bust every 2 minutes, The good bit is the library the staff are fantastic. Shopping City should be buldozed down its the worst hell hole I have ever seen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! or have to pass through. Bus services all axed on our South Side of the town just got the one bus now it arrives when it feels like. I am ashamed of the dreadful state of our shopping city/

Most of us in the US only know Liverpool as the hometown of the Beatles. John Lennon got evacuated to Scotland to avoid the blitz, but Ringo Starr spent some time in bomb shelters as a baby. Paul McCartney and George Harrison were born after the blitz.

I knew Dr. George Seymour Swan, ex Liverpool England. He was serving in Liverpool during World War Two, and received the King's commendation for his part in the rescue of Annie Done and Florence Bithell after the Well Lane bombing of 1941. He gave me an account of the event. He said that when Winston Churchhill visited Liverpool, he asked to see the two girls. His reply was "I'm sorry Sir, you can't see them". He said he got an autograph from him. Dr. Swan died at Sydney Australia in 1988 aged 92

Places like this can only thrive with a socialist government; unfortunately we've had decades of neoliberalism which puts the short term interests of large businesses first and sees public services as a way of corruptly transfer wealth from the public to the coffers of company directors and their pet politicians.
