I loved this show and I agree that Toby Stephens absolutely should have received an award!
The picture of the green eyed afgan girl is so over used for videos and books lol
great, great movie.
I would never put any LGBT characters in a story I wrote because there's no way to do them right, or at least not right enough to please the majority of people
I just started watching reviews after watching the movie just a few days ago . . . That ending speech about hope sprouting up was really mind opening, didn't think of it before.
It's a good show. I did notice a decline in S3-S4 though. They killed off too many important characters to make room for new storylines after S2. Randall should have lived until the fuking end.
Black Sails was an epic show until the woke crowd got involved and vomited rainbows all over it. The sick depravity they turned it into was the poster child of how to wreck an IP, and it became utterly impossible to finish watching. I haven't seen such a nasty, out-of-character, show since.
What was "woke" about it?
What a great presentation! I love this movie, was interested in your notes about the stage play original, and the analogy of Hollywood and the NYC stage. I take a small issue about your view of Jean's purpose in the movie. I feel she serves more than comic relief: here, she is the foil to Terry. She is almost fully aware of this, too, and makes the most of any ability to poke holes in Terry's attitude, background, and self-assuredness. Terry's character is revealed and evolves through her reaction to this, and her slowly developing concern for Jean. Jean is also the one who informs Terry about Kay; accuses her; and basically unleashes the flood of empathy that Terry's been either ignoring in herself, or toying with. The brittle wall breaks and the actress is freed, impressing Jean. It's Jean and Terry together who go Kay. In the movie, Jean is essential to Terry's story, and Terry, ironically, is essential for unveiling Jean's own sense of values, including to herself.
Coo duh grasssssssss 13:58 means « blow of mercy » is a blow to end the suffering of a severely injured person or animal. A coup de graw (as pronounced) mean striking someone with a slab of fat.
Good analysis, so I was confused by the unnecessarily rushed delivery. Agree with everything except the film's lack of flaws. In addition to Gloria's full makeup while sleeping her lips are grossly over drawn with lipstick even for black and white. That said, Grahame was notoriously self-conscious about her looks and may have had the make up artist of her choice written into her contract with her soon to be ex husband and director. Additionally, even for the atomically designed and padded wonder bras of the fifties, Grahame's breasts in her entrance scene seem like they're both uplifted and reaching for the sky. These flaws are distracting and inconsistent, given the fact the director had her sleeping in the nude; realistic but an unusual thing to pass censorship when married couples were still in twin beds. Jeff O'Donnell does much as the psych major detective's much smarter wife who has to swallow her gut instincts and pride, in deference to her husband. Unfortunately, the scene where she's entertaining Grahame on her patio has a water view backdrop that's as fake as their starter home is too affluent. Finally, the cleaning lady who comes almost daily with both apartments is something neither character could afford or would need. Using the milkman for that device would have been more realistic.
I hated Elenoir so much
All looks no substance
It does seem really underrated! I think I found out about it by accident on Wikipedia lol. I might pitch it to people as "Irish Ghibli." Nice video!
❤❤❤❤❤❤
excelent video!! Congratulations. thanks for the contribution. Really
The final scene of Rackham bringing “Mark” Mary Reed on board was foreshadowing his known fate. Historically he didn’t live much longer after that.
stupid movie..very poor
I recommend this show as thee best management training program. It has so many lessons on being a leader.
thank you!
Tobey was to Flint was Travis was for Ragnar. Both totally charismatic and conflicting leaders.
Anyone else feel like this show WOULD NOT EXIST were it not for Assassin's Creed Black Flag? Seriously, I think the only reason the how was called "Black Sails" was because "Black Flag" was already taken.
Show woulda been a 9/10 if it wasnt for Max the worst actress ever.
So dissappointed that the whole series about two gay guys' unrequited love. Enjoyed the female nudity and fight scenes. Why do the gays have to insert themselves in to everything. Pun intended.
I understand that in movies there is often artistic license, but in general I dislike it when movies give credit for "major" discoverers to historical figures, where there is zero evidence said figures ever made said discoveries. Kepler discovered planets travel in ellipses not Hypatia.
Only me sense the analysis is boring ?
I just finished binge watching after 2 weeks. It was excellent to say the least. The passion and emotions in each character was certainly deep. The writers had stunning scripts. Costumes were very true to form. Great series, one of the best I've seen in years!
Anyone who loves this film NEEDS to see “Out of the Past.” The perfect Robert Mitchum movie, and prototype film noir.
I saw the movie when I was a kid in the 80s. Read the book in high school in the 90s. Saw the film again a few years later. Loved the book; the film is such a departure it shouldn’t even have the same title. It’s a completely different story, maybe that’s why I never completely enjoyed the film.
The only two things I disagree with in this video is that 1. We only see the REUNION of thomas and flint not necessarily the aftermath of the two catching back up so to say that we never really know if its happily ever after for them only that they were allowed to meet up again. its likely to say that the two would have a feud over flints larger actions but I don't imagine thomas would mind much that flint executed his father given what his father did to thomas, to thomas's wife and flint, as well as to their dream. 2. I feel as though the ending with flint reuniting with thomas is more about what flint would give up to see him again. certainly he did fight a war to free men from slavery under the crown as well as to literally free slaves but I feel as though the story in its entirety is centered around how flint does any and everything he can to inconvenience and bring down england for PURELY personal motives against the crown and how it wronged him. in that sense I see his desire to liberate the pirates from under english rule and his assistance to the slave colonies as nothing more than a means to an end in his revenge and that they are not true virtues that he prioritizes in his life which would explain why he would so easily capitulate to silvers demand that he surrender in exchange for being reunited with thomas because above and everything else thats all he really wanted was to see thomas again and feel his soulmates embrace. this explanation of his motives definitely clashes with his original motives prior to becoming flint but throughout the entire show its not so subtly implied that flint hates who he has become and whats hes been led to do but is hopeless to quell his anger until he sees everything burnt to the ground as a true slave to his own rage which makes it more reasonable to interpret the ending that way IMO. great analysis otherwise though I love this show so much I'm considering another rewatch with friends its just truly peak.
Black Sails, as any fan will acquiesce to, is mid. The end of season 2 through the first half of season 4 are great. Season 1 starts slow and is directionless. Season 2 introduces the Flint/Silver dynamic as more than superior/servant, and is when it starts picking up. It's lacking action, which comes off as a funding issue as the battles are important and oft referenced, but scarsely shown and without much fanfare. You feel the struggle as the try to discover what the show will be about. Season 3 starts harshly, with the abrpt assertion that all the characters have been talking about a 'free Nassau' for 2 seasons... they were not. S03 opens to unestablished and unearned character changes. While I applaud them beginning to wrap up lingering open questions and unfinished stories as soon as season 3, season 4's ending still seems rushed. They do my least favorite mcguffin in movies - pretend someone was working on a sceme behind the scenes the whole time. SPOILERS: I appreciate that they killed off Flint, and the spinning of a fairytale story out of it to Madi as a fantasy to make it meld into Treasure Island's story and fiction about hunting for Flint's treasure is a nice touch too. But, I felt they did yet another disservice to Flint's character in resolving the fantasy with Thomas. I feel like they made him gay just to be gay, not addressing any of the interesting situations a closeted gay man would surely face in the 1700's as a 'widower', a criminal, a captain, a leader, a masculine male - so many elements which they gloss over or present him as straight as if they forget about it (his relationship with Thomas' wife as an example, and WHY was she ok with her husband cheating with Flint, so much so that she too loves Flint?). Billy was a let down, he was so strong of a character through season 3. Guthrie's death was a bit abrupt - necessary to drive the Governor's story. All-in-all, it's a good show, but it has it's issues. Just glad they never went too 'Pirates of the Carribean' hokey with it.
I fell in love with it for everything it has to offer from music to storyline but keep re-watching it just for the artstyle! Man! It's magic!!! T.T
I really hate the way most people say that this film is like "based on mulan" especially from a young naive audience. When the novel itself wasn't even based upon that story.
It's an excuse for people who don't like the truth to ignore it and discourage people from watching it.
The movie doesn't even happen around those areas
So we didn’t get Flints death because fans of that garbage ass show “The 100” started a campaign? lol that’s nuts
this movie is about how the muslims are horrible and that they eat sand
best friggin show ever made , the writting is sublime
That one death scene in season 4, yea, that was probably the most gruesome thing I've ever seen on television. It was fucking amazing. The whole way that scene played out, at first I was like "oh, that doesn't look so bad.." then he comes up and I wonder "why is he all shredded?".. then they show you. My favorite thing about it though is that, while not how that man saw is end historically, it was a way that many men did, and I don't think I've ever seen it portrayed before, and if I have, it certainly wasn't done that well. This show was such a 10 out of 10, I'm upset it took me so long to find it. Rare to see a show start this good, and literally get better every season until it has an almost perfect ending, and then you can read a 150 y.o. book to hear what happens next lol. EDIT: I had no idea people didn't like the first season, I was hooked from the start. The quality of writing, and elevation of narrative above all else was so refreshing to me. I think it may be due to the tv shows we've had in recent years, and their tendency to fall apart shortly after starting. It definitely left me craving something better, and that had depth, and Black Sails has that in spades.
you speak too fast, please slow down. We are not all english natives.
I just seen this movie. I absolutely loved it. So many awesome woman in their prime was in this movie. I love watching Lucille Ball and Eve Arden. My 2 favorite woman.
Eleanor Guthrie was my least favorite character on the show by far. The way she always made the worst possible decision.
She was brutal
Many reviewer's say that hypatia is described as an atheist.personally I don't think so.What is your opinion? And I know it is not about romance but just wished she once kissed Orestes.

Islamophobia? I think you’re using modern left-wing liberal presumptions at critics who watched this movie. As it can clearly be seen throughout the film, it is the teachings of Islam that have led the Arab people to the brink. The Taliban, Isis, Hamas, etc. are the groups that eviscerate their own people in order to suppress their individualism. Islam is oppression and chaos. These innocent people need to be liberated from Islam.
The taliban was funded by usa back when Afghanistan was communist to overthrow the government. And isis would've no existed if usa didn't invade iraq and leaving it with no military to defend itself for 10 years
It's not on their part, the general professional community outside of asia and africa are afraid to tackle these topics even if they are giving genuine insights into the people potrayed as villanous and barbaric at some point, the islamophobia is really just the refusal to pay ear into these topics on a wide-scale, honestly I can't actually give a proper opinion on how it feels to be from islamic or middle-eastern communities, since I'm neither, I'm catholic, But obviously whatever these people have been going trough for the past 40 years or so is to be aware of, if we let them continually destroy themselves it'll be more violent.
@@seedad117 taliban made up former mujehideen that includes former soldiers from Afghan Armed Forces.
Is the author of this video a historian? Seems that way.. explanation was very detailed and accurate. Fascinating analysis.
Silver didnt kill flint. In the book Billy says flint dies in Savannah. Only time flint is in Savannah in the whole show is at the end with Thomas. Don’t overthink it.
I've been a lifelong James Bond afficionado and for the longest time my only contact with Toby Stephen's was as the main antagonist in "Die Another Day". I'm sure Toby did his best but it is a very lackluster and forgettable performance. I just recently finished Black Sails and was absolutely mesmerized by Toby. It honestly took me a few episodes to place where I knew him from. He has a certain tendency to clench his jaw and show his lower teeth when he conveys anger that I had seen somewhere before. Now his performance on Black Sails and his portrayal of Gustav Graves is so starkly different it should be studied. I understand one is a movie and one is a series but even if any one episode is held against his portrayal in the movie it is glaringly different. Toby Stephen's absolutely blew me away as Capt Flint. Bravo!
I introduced my oldest daughter Black Sails. The next night, she called me at midnight and said, "Mom, you're not gonna believe this. I was watching Black Sails and they showed this flashback and there was this guy and Captain Flint just KISSED him." Lol.
You condensed 4 seasons in less than 25 minutes, BRAVA!!! Love it, I was devastated by the ending, he was sold to a plantation as a SLAVE!! WTAF?
