Baseball Card Lore: Phantom Cards and the Curious Case of Cal
The Phillies rotation is basically a first gen Porsche Panamera. Deceptively amazing looking from the front, powerful, sounds nasty when it is running full throttle, and OH MY GOD, THE BACK END...MY EYES! THE GOGGLES, THEY DO NOTHING!
My kingdom for a 5th starter
Kolby Allard is the answer. Right? RIGHT!?
@@gooddoctor500 no 5th starter, only khlav kalash.
That did...not...go well
No, no it didn't. 8 earned runs in less than 3 innings. YIKES.
Nelson walked a bunch of guys and hit a batter with his new knuckleball. So, yeah. DFA.
It was ugly. Velocity was good, but no command against a bunch of schmuck Marlins.
"Utility man" Cal Stevens? That is what we are going with?
That was the most complimentary term I could think of?
My grandmother used to give me 5 bucks in a card on my birthday every year. When I found out what she passed away with, I realized that was a lot of money to her. We really failed our WW2 veterans.
Great finds and some gems to look at and recall your grandmother! And as others have said your card videos are the best on UA-cam
Appreciate the feedback. I'll continue to try and meet that high bar!
Been a collector/dealer for over 40 years, and never once in that amount of time has a story ever made me tear up until i heard yours about your grandma, it took me back to being a kid with my grandparents. You have single handedly changed my mind about my collections. I am now working to move out of modern/ultra-modern and get into Vintage. Your videos are criminally underrated.
Thanks for that. I appreciate your view and sub to help move my channel from criminally underrated to simply underrated. 🤣
Just found your channel and love your stories and narration
Welcome! Have a look around and enjoy. I'm glad you're here.
Glad Alvarado is back and ok
Agreed. He's mum on why he needed the time, but that's not our business.
Man, that is so cool that you came across a dealer who had just bought out a Phillies Super collector! What a score. Great story about your Grandmother too. Just curious. Do you collect Philadelphia A's cards? I am in Minneapolis. I collect Twins and the original Senators. I am Also slowly collecting the T-206 Minneapolis Millers and St Paul Saints.
I never got into the A's, no. Since the Phils go back to 1883, there is more than enough with just the one team, plus I'll always think of the A's as Oakland.
Wiggum: Once a person is on the IL, anything you do to a minor leaguer is nice and covered by the collective bargaining agreement. Phillies: Is that sooooo? Oh Marte, won't you join us on our 26 man roster? Marte: Hi-didly hey! Wiggum: it doesn't work if you want to win the division. Phillies: Go back to Lehigh Valley. Marte: Too-doodly doo!
Perfect. No notes.
love to hear that you continually upgrade your cards. Tell me, do you then sell the lower grade card on ebay? Good way to recoup some money to further collect!
No, ebay fees kinda kill the fun. Usually I take the doubles and low grade stuff to shows and trade them for newer stuff.
But I usually have a full 2 row box of doubles at any one time.
Another great episode really fun listen thanks.
Appreciate that
My gosh the Covaleski dealer may as well have stuck you up with a gun. Sounds like he admitted to the attempted robbery too? I’m glad you hit pay dirt after that - well done!
Ive discovered your channel, and love the content. the most recent one Ive watched (this one) showed your prospect collection. I've got tons of newer bowman, and as a thanks for your content I would like to send you some Phillies. I'm a Phillies collector too, (also now collect Rays since moving to Clearwater) but have too many to enjoy. Wondering how I could share some with you as a thanks for your videos.
Thanks for your generosity and support. Shoot me an email, PhilliesBaseballCards@gmail.com to connect!
Awesome cards. Congrats on the great cards
Thanks for the continued support!
You need to call the person who bought that Phillies collection and take everything off her hands. You bought some great cards there. Love the Cracker Jack card!
I have their business card, and we've connected via email. Hope to be able to browse the rest of the collection!
Amazing, man! Loved it
Appreciate the support +
I too hope he washed his hands. Hahahahaha. I was thinking just that as you mentioned it. Great content once again. Your videos are a must watch for me. Don’t hold this against me, but I’ve been an Astros fan since 1986. I’m jealous of the long history of the Phillies and that you can collect back to the 19th century. May the 4 cards you picked up from your grandmothers estate continue to bring you joy. Much the best.
We've all got our team, but they're all great cards!
That was a nice haul to end the "boys of summer".
The end of summer...sigh.
You have the best card show videos. Thx. Love the pickups. You spent your grandmother’s money well. It’ll be a good memory for ever.
Thanks. Cracker Jacks are always worth it!
Fantastic video and narrative…
Thanksnfor the support!
Thanks Grandma! Great haul, congratulations!
Excited for this one
Wild stuff, those are great pickups. Another fantastic video
Thanks for the support
Marte is getting real familiar with the American Airlines bus from ABE to PHL.
Hahahaha, my parents were recently forced on that bus.
You make great videos, thank you. I very much enjoyed this one.
Glad you like them!
Marte again?
Again
Just give the guy a baseball card already!
Please, and then DfA him for good
Incredible. Just incredible story telling.
Thanks for the continued support!
The greatest card show video I’ve seen yet.
High praise, thanks!
Big time score there! Congrats and thanks for sharing your experience.
Cracker Jacks are my favorite, and that 1887 is so cool!
@@PhilliesBaseballCards no doubt. That one was my favorite.
Grandmother's are very special people.
This one was a tough bird, but I'm glad to remember her.
This might be your best video ever, and that's saying a lot. The grandma part literally gave me goosebumps. Thanks for your wonderful channel and its superb content.
Thanks for the continued support!
Relatable, funny, heart warming. You could be writing scripts in Hollywood!
Instead I have to go to faculty meetings...
Wow, what a find. Glad you picked out those particular cards. Great story as always.
Thanks, love the Cracker Jack!
Bravo! Your best installment yet. Love the storytelling.
Appreciate that, thanks
Excellent video as usual dude! Sick pick ups!
Appreciate it!
So happy I've found your channel. To be totally honest, I'm getting quite tired of the cringe typical card content. All these people sucking up to whoever it is who has spent the most at a show.. Sorry, it takes more than that to keep my attention. We all are glad you got something extra special to enjoy your relatives gift by also. I'm quite sure that dealer family will set you up even moreso later on! Guys like yourself makes me think this wild west of a hobby still has a future.
Well, then there is hope for us all
Great video again! I have been meaning to ask you if you would be at the Dallas show in a few weeks, but I see that the show season is over for you. Have a good semester!
No Dallas for me. I usually get to Dallas in May, just after school ends, but it's a bit too far for mid semester.
Amazing that you came across another super Phillies collection stash and able to pick up so many rarities in Broken Arrow Oklahoma. Years ago I was in North Little Rock where there was an incredible card shop with Babe Ruth traveling satchel and other incredible items. The owner later owned the Large PSA 5 T206 Honus Wagner. So you never know what comes out of Little Rock Arkansas and ends up at a show in Broken Arrow Oklahoma. I guess the same way a teacher from Philladelphia ends up in Oklahoma. I bet it was tempting to pull out the old mastercard and buy the whole collection. Thanks for taking me to the show.
Yeah def wanted it all, but it was not a prudent financial decision.
No sidekick this time, eh?
Nope, had to fly solo
Nice pickups, hopefully the Little Rock collection yields some more collecting gold.
I hope so, too! I wish I could have known the guy who had it.
I loved the sly hilarity. The comment about the dealer washing his hand reminded me of the classic Seinfeld episode with the unhygienic restaurant owner. And "coo-coo for cereal cards"? I had to laugh remembering the ads for "Coo-coo for Cocoa Puffs" from my childhood. I used to tell my students that I was "Cocoa for Coo-Coo Puffs." I'd forgotten that those old Phils did not have red logos. I also had no idea any strip cards were as ornate as that Meadows. I was ready to believe it was Neilson's till you explained. There is nothing in this world like grandmothers who beckon to us spiritually.
Ha, thanks. Subtle humor is the best humor, methinks.
can't wait to see what else that collection in Little Rock has in store for you
Little by little, my own, my precious.
Wow some amazing pick ups. 1887 Phillies can't imagining owning them beauties. Great video as usual.
1887! It's so cool!
Fantastic tribute to one of the lone bright spots for that era of Phillies baseball. Although often overlooked, I think one of the biggest odes to his greatness was splitting the “says” portion of ‘34 Goudey with Gehrig. I know it’s not for many cards and who knows if they all actually exist( damn you Dolph!) but pretty cool all the same
Now that you mention it, I should have pointed out the "Chuck Klein says" Goudey cards. That kinda huge.
Well said..... enjoy the journey. This is my second go around and I don't see myself getting off the ride anytime soon.
Glad you're back in the hobby
I have this card but not graded
You have the Magie error??? Amazing
Nepo baby 😂
Thought the same thing 😂
Totally, he and Kody Clemens both
I rolled in Friday at 11 didn’t even have a line and got parked in 5 minutes. Not enough bathrooms but didn’t even wait 10 minutes. And I don’t care about food . Overall a great show.
Great show. I heard that the weekend was less crazy than the Wed/Thur. Just lucky I guess!
