Welcome to my channel! I'm a 4-time breast cancer survivor whose love of the outdoors was rekindled during my healing journey. I began hiking again to reconnect with nature, breathe in fresh air and nurture my body, mind and spirit. Now I want to hike the Pacific Crest Trail! Follow along as I take this journey. The trail starts working on you the moment you decide you want to hike it. This channel will cover my path as I train physically, acquire gear, consider logistics, and most importantly prepare mentally and emotionally for the journey ahead.

Excellent overview on this tent. Thanks for putting it together. Hooing to see it in trail, and see how it does. New sub here!
@@MylesAway3 Thank you!😁
It's so good to see your smiling face out on trail! And to hear your plans for this year. Plus you sure are sporting a cute shirt! :) That word flexible is central to my philosophy also. I have big plans for this year as I see my 70s closing in and want to keep going strong as long as possible. Maybe we'll be able to meet up at least for a short hike sometime if our PCT plans don't jive. Keep on tuckin!
@mimihikes3702 Yes! I still have the late June, early July PCT Nor-Cal section with you on my radar, depending on how some other travel plans go. I'll keep you posted! P.S. I noticed we have the same Jolly Gear shirt. I get too clammy in it though, so only use it on colder days. I've been enjoying your PCT videos. You're an inspiration to me.🌻💛
@@TheHikingChick1 Thank you very much! That means a lot!
You are an amazing woman. I have been praying for you almost every morning (and Jim and Evan too) since your post about the cancer recurrence. So glad to see this update. Pulling for you to have the best experience ever on the PCT. ❤ Merry Christmas and the best of all in 2025.
@@itsmebd1 Thank you so much! I so appreciate your prayers. Merry Christmas to your whole family.🎄❤️
You go girl! I think we are all here behind you.
@@jackiehorn3724 Thank you! So sweet. 🌻💛
I’m doing a thru hike starting on April 13. I’d love to meet you, but I’m starting a southbound flip flop starting at Kennedy meadows south. We may pass each other, that would be fun!
@@lindadietsche1533 Awesome! Depending on snow levels this season, my plan B would be to start at Walker Pass or Tehachapi and go SOBO, so you never know. 😁
Way to go. Looking forward to your adventure.
@@austinbertelson4525 Thank you!
I am super super excited for you because I know you got robbed from getting on trail last year. The next section is tough but some of the most beautiful scenery in the entire desert section so definitely worth the effort. As always I love your positive attitude. I feel for you, in a way that the PCT gives you something to work for and strive for every year and to finally beat this cancer thing. I will be following along The way. All the best Marmalade!
@MarmaladeOutdoors Thank you always for the encouragement. The PCT definitely gives me something to work toward and look forward to. I know section B isn't easy, so I'll be planning accordingly. Thanks again for the encouragement. Your PCT videos have always been a great resource and help keep me motivated. 😁
All my best to you, as a fellow survivor. I don't think people know how much the surgery and treatment take it out of you. It is so impressive that you are back at it and hiking again. Happy Solstice, and Happy Trails to you.
@@GC-Hiker Thank you so much! It's been a lot harder this time around, but I'm gradually getting it back. 🥾🥾😁
I think I'm starting at big bear in mid April. Maybe I'll see you out there.
@@lisasdayoff503 Sounds great Lisa!🌻💛
Hey Monica, Happy Holidays to you. So happy you are still focused on the trail and the magic it provides to offset the challenges you face. You are a rock star and watching your adventures makes me smile and warms my soul. I did a lot of backpacking when I was in high school and then in Oregon a few years ago. I have stuff going on in 2025, but in 2026, I am now planning on hiking the entire PCT with my cardiac service and adventure dog Trak’r! I just had both knees replaced, a neck fusion and in one month I’ll have a new shoulder. In 2025 I plan to hike around here in Asheville, NC. Then in 2026, I will be moving into an adventure RV and heading to Campo. Not sure where I’m parking my rig yet, but that’s the plan. Happy Trails and know that everyone, I’m sure, are all sending you positive karma love to help you make it down the trail!!! 💕
@@hounddoghiker9021 Thank you for the encouragement and thank you for sharing your Awesome future plans! So exciting. You are also an over-comer! More power to you!💪 🐾🥾

Im looking to get this shelter too. It looks great! do you still like it? Thanks!
@MylesAway3 I wasn't able to get on trail and try it out in 2024 due to health issues. Planning on using it next Spring on the PCT. It's a very nice tent.
I use the SWD 50 L Long Haul and 70L Big Wild for most of my Backpacking trips and love them both. Would recommend them to anyone: Well worth the price and wait - they know what they are doing making the most robust, comfortable and modular UL backpacks out there IMO.
Glad to hear you've had great luck with SWD packs. I can't wait to get out on trail with my Long Haul!
The Cuban fiber bags they make to stack inside the backpacks are also amazing. Very convenient dry storage for your fall hikes.
I have the Rugged Long Haul 50. I love it. SWD is great company and make a great product. You will love your pack. Great choice!
Looks like a great pack. What’s your opinion about this style vs. trampoline style packs?
@chili1593 My Osprey Aura is trampoline style, part of why it's so comfortable as well as less back sweat. The Long Haul style carries closer to the back, which I feel is a bit better for posture. Trampoline style sits away from the back, causing a slight forward lean to compensate (and tight hip flexors). I won't know how I really feel about it until I get the Long Haul on trail more, but on my initial training hikes with it, I like the weight hugged to my back better. I hope that helps.😁
@ very helpful thanks. I have both styles and understand your point. Will be interested to see how your experience is on trail. Did you check out any of the Durston packs? I love my Wapta and other than the warm back I forget I’m carrying it. I’m going to take a look at your pack though it looks awesome. Thanks again and happy hiking.
@chili1593 Never tried the Durston packs. The Long Haul has a better max carry (40lbs) than most packs in the 2lb range.
@ I know from experience fit is very individual. I use the Wapta as a day pack as I fish. I also have a couple of others for day hiking both larger and smaller heavier and lighter depending on the weather and what I’m carrying for contingencies rods etc. The 55L Kakwa is stated as being able to carry 45 lb max which is far more than I would want to burden myself for with as a weekend warrior for overnights and not a thru hiker so I was curious. I go where bear cans are required so I need the space. Keep us posted and again happy hiking!
Very informative, thank you! I’m 1 month into the 4 month wait for my Long Haul 40, and this video makes me even happier about my purchase decision.
You're welcome! It's worth the wait!😁 Thx for watching. 🌻
Yea, it feels like forever but completely worth the wait!
Great job on this review! I’m so happy you’ve found a pack that works for you. Do you know the value of getting a pack that fits you right especially when you’re long distance Hiking. You also showed how difficult it can be sometimes with how many packs you’ve gone through to find one that works for you. Again great job I really enjoy this. I am excited for you to get back on trail the spring and hopefully I’ll see you out there somewhere. Cheers
@MarmaladeOutdoors Thank you Marmalade! 😁 The true test will be getting the pack on trail, but so far it seems like a great choice. Hopefully I've found that balance between weight and comfort. Can't wait to get back out there!
@ have you use your packed day hiking at all to see how it feels?
@MarmaladeOutdoors Yes, I loaded it up and did a couple of training hikes after I got it at the end of last year. I had bought it for 2024 season before my health setback. I'll be getting it out on more training hikes when I'm strong enough. Still working my way back. 💪
@@TheHikingChick1 great I’m so proud and happy for you!

Hi I was wondering why I had not seen any videos from section b. I made it to I 10 (209 miles )this year. I got a new pack too. 30 l fastpack, running vest.
@lisasdayoff503 Wow! Congrats. Way to go on Section B. I was so disappointed to not get back out there this year. My dream is still alive.😁
Dang ur a star from the git !!!! I think it is a great choice !! I have the SS1p by Tarptent. Im looking for a 2p now and that's one that is on my serious list !! I don't know if I will go ULTRA material or Li. ATB 😊
Looks like a pain to set up. Curious if it got easier and how the condensation was ? I have a notch for about 4 yrs and around 150+ nights and while it’s small, it never had any condensation, got wet and goes up in literally a minute with 4 pegs. Trying to decide if I should upgrade to the dipole for more space
It's not a difficult setup. I wasn't able to get out in it this year due to health issues, so I don't have any field experience to report on. I chose it for the increased ventilation and roominess inside. It's my first 1p and single wall tent and hoping for an easier transition from my Nemo Hornet 2p. Sorry for the delayed response.🌻
My first time to backpacking there, where do l’m park my car? Thank you
@prisilaperez7101 There are two spots you can park. We used the trailhead at the back of Bridal Veil Creek Campground but there is another trailhead a little further up Glacier Point Road. You'll have to specify on your wilderness permit application which one if you plan to stay overnight. Have fun!
Hope you feel better soon!❤
Wow, this was just amazing my friend 👏
Thank you!
Good morning What a great video. I really appreciate that there was no music. I really enjoy just the sounds of you hiking down/up the trail. Really nice of the bicyclist to have bells to warn you he was coming Look forward to more of your videos.
Thank you! Yes, the mtn bikers are generally very courteous here. The local mtb association does great outreach and trail maintenance and offers bell loan locations at trailheads and before common downhill sections (you can see them on some of the posts in the video). As a hiker it's very appreciated. 👍
Nice area to hike in. Beautiful
Thank you!
Looking fit, PCT, PCT

Hi😁 just watched your video. Sorry to hear about your cancer reaccurance 🙏 praying for speedy recovery. My daughter in law recently had a double mastectomy because she has a very rare cancer😢 also went thru chemotherapy. So far has not returned 🙏 but has to get checked yearly and praying for the best. She also loves the outdoors. We are determined to go on her first hike. Not sure when/ where either but I’d love to take her to do Barrel Springs to Warner Springs. That was a moderate beautiful hike. Plus she has a knee replacement so something not to strenuous. I did section A, still gotta do 24 miles of it to complete 🥲 but also aiming for March 2025 to do Warner Springs to PVC👏👏 I’ll be going probably in November to finish my in between 24 miles I need to complete scissors crossing to Barrel springs. Work gets in the way and now too hot. Well wishing you the best and look forward to your videos on Section B. I like you show the good, the bad and the ugly. Showing the true trail and especially sketchy parts, thank you.
Thank you! It may be 2025 before I get back out there. Treatment and recovery going to be longer than I originally thought. 😪

God Speed!
Used the Dipole 1LI for the last 1700mi of my 2023 AT thruhike (one of the wettest years). Absolutely loved it. I always used 6 stakes. Setup can be a little bit more fiddely on uneven ground, but you get used to it. Greetings from Germany, Tobi-Wan
Glad to hear that! I figured it could be a little tricky on uneven ground. I can't wait to get back out on the PCT and see how it goes. 😀 Thx for commenting!
@@TheHikingChick1 Happy trails!
A colleague of mine was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. They did chemo and after lots of treatments he went into remission. His doctor said he wanted to try something else. He suggested a couple courses of interferon because lung cancer is so aggressive and always comes back. They went through the treatment and he has been cancer free for over 15 years. I’ll be looking forward to your next videos, especially section B.
Wonderful story about your colleague. Thanks for sharing.🌻
Thanks to folks like you I am inspired to do the PCT in sections. Appreciate your update. Will be sending up positive thoughts for your smooth treatment and complete recovery! Wherever and whenever the trail of life is leading -- Be safe; keep at it!

That was just a smidge of a peek but look forward to hearing more about it. (I think I know what it is haha). I am so sorry to hear about the cancer coming back but absolutely love your attitude in taking it on and defeating it. This strikes a cord with me having lost my single to breast cancer at the age of only 28. You are a strong woman and can do anything you put your mind too wether it be cancer or hiking this wonderful trail. I am the same as you in terms of this trail giving me something to look forward too every year... I truly hope you get to hike this spring and not have to wait. Cheers Marmalade

Thanks for subscribing! The map and compass are my backup for nav. On the PCT I use the FarOut app and also use my Garmin inReach... but tech can always fail so... old school map and compass. Sometimes redundancy is the smart thing. 😁
Thank you very much for the interesting review of the tent.🌹
Having dealt with tents collapsing in the middle of the night because of damp, sandy soils or just windy it is much easier to add stakes as needed. Another words add your tie outs now instead of in the middle of the night cause that is nearly impossible when Wendy.
Great tip for sure!
I have a Protrail in silnylon - almost 8 years old! It's been on a bunch of scouts camp outs and dozens of solo overnights at Lake Pleasant north of Phoenix, AZ. With the burros trotting through my campground at 5am, I was concerned they might trample me and my tent, but they don't seem to ever step on anything accidentally. That Dipole is one deluxe solo tent. I don't know it specifically, but I've got a feel for their designs. It does need to be quite a bit tighter and crisper and I suspect it needs at least 4 more guy lines to be storm ready. You're right to be cautious and go slowly on tuning up an ultralight tent until you know it well. I don't think the cuben fiber builds last as long as silnylon or silpoly, so avoiding over-tensioning to get longevity is the game. I haven't had much trouble with condensation, but Arizona is pretty low humidity. Until the monsoons. Mine has a lot of venting - 2 long, low horizontal netting strips along the sides. So it mostly over ventilates, which is excellent for summer camping. I put more effort into deciding how much to block the vents by tossing on stuff sacks, wind jackets and spare clothes to get the venting down to a reasonable amount in cold weather. On cold car camps I bring a wool blanket to insulate the whole floor and then toss an edge onto the vents to cover them. Not as warm as a double wall tent, but it gets by. Arizona is usually mild, but when there are storms, they really go for it. I've had a few auxiliary tarps get the corners torn out. The tent has done great, but I do use all the tie outs when I see a storm coming. Mine has about 8 optional wind tie outs. Staking out the door just makes the basic shape cleaner and more well behaved. The ground here is either loose sand or very hard with lots of rocks, so I replaced all the stakes with MSR Ground Hog hardened aluminum Y stakes. They make some extra long ones with a helical twist for wet ground and mini ones if you have nice solid clay soil. The Easton round stakes are good, but they just slide through the sand and aren't quite hard enough to drive through the hard/rocky soil without bending.
Awesome tips thank you! I've got 4 MSR groundhogs to bring for the two door guyouts as well as extra guylines for the tent ends where the struts are. I'm getting a great pitch!
Nice. Good luck on the PCT!
Thank you! Your tent was my other choice, but I opted for the extra ventilation. Your tents look awesome too! It was such a difficult choice! 😁
