Nowakowski - Fantasy on the opera 'Halka' [Op. 51]
Performed by: Cyprien Katsaris.
This piece is a fantasy which more or less follows the second Act from Moniuszko's opera "Halka".
Józef Nowakowski (1800-1865) was a renowned Polish pianist and composer. He studied at the Warsaw Conservatory from 1821 to 1826 under the guidance of Józef Elsner and Wilhelm Würfel. It was during these formative years that he forged a significant friendship with Fryderyk Chopin. This connection was highlighted when Chopin’s second public concert in Warsaw, held on March 22, 1830, included Nowakowski's Second Symphony, a work he composed under Elsner’s tutelage. In 1833, Nowakowski embarked on a tour through Germany, Italy, and France. He subsequently settled in Paris during the years 1838, 1841, and 1846-47. During his stays in Paris, he published the 12 Etudes op.25, which he dedicated to Chopin.
Halka is considered one of Moniuszko's greatest operas. Musicologist Carl Dahlhaus describes Halka as "the Polish national opera". The music in Halka is highly melodic, deeply lyrical and Polish in character. It includes moving poetic arias like "Gdybym rannym słonkiem" (If by the Morning Sun) and Szumią jodły (Sighing Firs), scenes depicting the life of the Polish nobility (szlachta) and highlanders (Gorals), as well as spectacular dance sequences. The story is that of the tragic love of the title character, the highlander girl Halka, for the noble Janusz, who abandons her to wed the daughter of the Esquire. It is a tale of jealousy and sacrifice.
Hans von Bülow described Halka's G minor aria at the beginning of act 2 as, "Full of originality and lively passion, to which its strongly native folk element adds a special flavor...The entire gamut of erotic emotions, from the tender to the most vehement note of despair finds appropriate expression in this aria and one must genuinely congratulate the composer"

This is the Liszt arrangement, "Cotta Edition". Performed by: Leslie Howard. This serenade is a classic example of Schubert's outstanding lyrical facility, as well as his penchant for long melodic lines. There is little interruption in the fluttering harp-like broken triad accompaniment, creating a tense contrast with the spacious and languid melody-an anticipation of Felix Mendelssohn's Songs ...

Interesting fact - Eric Xi Xin Liang (Musicforever60) said that this sonata was more chalenging fro him than the Minnacioasa! You can never estimate the real difficulty of Medtner's piece, that's what is imo the most tricky thing for the Medtner interpretets.

If I did not know better I would have thought Rachmaninoff composed this Yes, there are differences but there is something about this romantic style that comes through strong
It's just a shame that almost no one knows about beautiful classical pieces like this.
I love that orchestra moment❤ 20:40
Most lovely of all his works
Is it possible for you to upload the piano without the orchestration?
Turangalila when
In his day Reinecke was very famous, but musical history has a habit of burying all but a few composers. This is an absolutely wonderful work.
