Episode 237 - Young Elizabeth with Dr Nicola Tallis
I’m under the impression that Henry had every representation of Anne destroyed. Considering there was no film or photography then, it wasn’t that hard of a task.
Great episode! Amy is amazing!
I'd join you and Dr Owen for a discussion on anything 😂❤
This is very interesting! My note on the fan fiction would be that, Anne is subject to so much fanfic it’s a self perpetuating machine. Anne has always been a popular figure which means there’s a multitude of media about her to consume. It’s always the most popular characters who have the most written, the most pairings because with broader consumption more readers are likely to project themselves onto the character. It’s a choose your own adventure (and author insert if you will)- Anne has been portrayed a myriad of ways. Thus, she can be anyone, anything, hold any views. Which is very similar to what The Creation of Anne Boleyn postulates. In fandom terms, Anne and Henry are the fandom bikes. You can pair em with anyone and watch the wheels spin!
Thanks for this very interesting glimpse into a fantastic 16th Century Ottoman woman.
Wonderful. Such interesting details about this woman’s life with these three husbands. What a queen bee Elizabeth was so well done to Frances for not wanting the claustrophobic court life. I have never heard of Tony Riches so I shall be searching out his work. I usually read fact not fiction but he is a good storyteller. I don’t know how to access someone’s blogs though - can anyone help please? Natalie can you add links to your guests’ blogs for the electronically challenged listeners? Thank you so much.
What's the name of the music at the intro?
Many thanks, this was such an interesting episode.
So glad you enjoyed it!
What a wonderful episode, thank you so much. The peacock 🦚 sounds just marvellous, surely it’s not original is it? If it is, wow - what an object to actually have. I think I’d just look at it with tears in my eyes, just for the sheer age of it and what it meant to people. Love the bit about the snails 🐌🙏🙏🙏👵🇦🇺
Yes, the snails anecdote was great!
Great episode 👏 competition and collaboration among the stars of the entertainment world...some things never change 😉 The jibe "Shake-scene" made me smile.
Good job!
Really brings the subject alive, thanks
I had to pause to order the book then came back on to listen more--I love how your love for the Tudors is so organic, Tony, and I look forward to reading more about Francis!
Exceptionally interesting episode. Many thanks.
Tony Riches is a knowledgeable man and always informs me of things that I never knew before. Interesting man
You really brought forward the complexities of her life and of her personality. She’s usually painted black (great job of that by Jessica Raines in Wolf Hall by the way) so it’s great to explore all that gray area.
I loved your book on Jane.
Katherine of Aragon was in France also
Love hearing how artist interpret subjects. Thank you
Dr Kat… always a treat!
Excellent! Thank you! ❤
This was a brilliant interview. I'm a black American, and recently learned I'm a descendant of Mary Boleyn through her daughter, Catherine Carey. Mary's my 14th great-grandmother on my mother's side. It was fascinating to learn of Catherine Carey possibly being the daughter of King Henry VIII this morning (1 September 2024), and very ironic - I'm descended from Mary Tudor-Brandon and Charles Brandon on my father's side, via a line of Seymours who left England and emigrated to Bermuda (my father's Bermudian). Genealogy itself - along with my love of the English royals - is a godsend.
Estelle is so hard to listen to! She does not have a voice that does well in voice media, also she makes a lot out of Anne's time in France, was it educatinal sure, but the impact is hard to estimate and traslate into real life. Most of her relations could not relate to her experience, I would say it made her as many enemies as friends. I think she is by far more attractive to men, due to her accent, manerisms and looks, and less to women at the court. That follows her all her short life and to some degree seen in her downfall.
Excellent! Thank you! ❤❤
Her laugh is crazy and infectious!
Gareth Russell is a fantastic historian. I could listen to him all day. ❤️
Happy to be introduced to his work. Looking forward to reading his books.
Thank you, once again, really interesting 🙏🙏👵🇦🇺
Thank you. This is on my reading list!❤
Excellent show! Thank you
Blackwork! Lovely! If you like using your hands you might want to learn tatting - a very old form of lace making 😉
Terrific episode. The guest speaker Linda Porter was brilliant
Anytime you can connect 80's icon Bonnie Tyler with the Tudors - I'M IN!!!! 👑🎤📼💜
Nathen is a brilliant researcher and also a brilliant raconteur (if that's not too trite-sounding, which it's not meant to be!) Nathan's beginnings as a journalist have shaped his scholarship and writing. A gripping interview. I am always fascinated by the "beginnings of things". G Ire
Thank you. This was very interesting.
What an amazing collection, Natalie! ❤
Thank you for this exceptionally interesting interview. Brett Dolman's vivid descriptions of the exhibits and his enthusiasm for the Tudor world really made this a very special episode.
So glad you enjoyed it!
Great podcast! Thank you 🙏 Margaret has always been one of my favourite Tudor figures, quite underrated. A rollercoaster life, one that saw much disappointment and sadness. But as mentioned here, it's Margaret's line that grew, prospered and still exists to this day 👑 🌹 👑
Glad you enjoyed it!
Terrific interview. Many thanks Natalie and Nathan.
"Napkins with lace borders.. "😮
Nathen is brilliant and makes me feel proud to be Welsh 🏴🏴🏴
He's awesome!
Hi Natalie! I just ordered Nathens new book. Can't wait.❤
Enjoy!!
Loved this! Fascinating!
Delighted to hear this!
I always love Nathan's enthusiasm and knowledge. He really awakens a desire to learn more about Henry VII and the earlier Tudors. That was so interesting. Thank you.
He sure does! You've very welcome.
The book is great, Nathan is great, thank you 😊
He sure is!
Love the enthusiasm of Nathan ❤❤❤
Me too!
Thank you Natalie and Nathen. I'll by buying every book Nathen writes. Can't wait.
Wonderful!
Can I get a social media account to contact you?
Fantastic! Cheers Natalie and Nathen! ⭐️👑
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you Natalie and Nathan, thoroughly enjoyed the episode. I find Henry V11 far more interesting than any of the other Tudors. I’m glad you have a bit of credence to Elizabeth of York, so many just sort of pass her off as ‘The Wife’. Apologies, no more due to 🐈⬛🐈⬛🙏🙏👵🇦🇺
So glad you enjoyed it!
