    So does this "bearding" phenomenon help to cool the bees down in some way?

    • @missedmyself
      @missedmyself Місяць тому

      it gets too hot inside so they come outside to cool off. the hotter it is the bigger the beard gets. my dad used to be a bee keeper

    • @rockridgebees1417
      @rockridgebees1417 Місяць тому

      they need to control the temperature inside the hive, so if it gets too hot some of them come outside.

    Great Set Up! I've been writing my current hive info on blue painters tape stuck to the back of hives, with red sharpie. That way I can keep longer continuous records and even carry over to the next year if necessary. Cover space will either get used up or confusing after awhile. Keep Beeing!

    i have done the same thing with a queen less hive, but i put news paper between the queen less hive and the swarm, they will accept the new queen better.

  • @jefferyhammond1421
    @jefferyhammond1421 2 місяці тому

    Did you do like a news paper introduction or literally just popped them on top? This year I'm using snellgrove boards to join swarms to my middling hives so they'll be 2 colonies filling one super like a demaree. What your doing looks like the same thing with less steps and you get a bonus queen if you need her elsewhere.

    • @rockridgebees1417
      @rockridgebees1417 2 місяці тому

      I installed the swarm (established 5F nuc w/ laying queen) directly into the existing colony's brood section. I felt comfortable doing it that way knowing the size of the nuc vs the amount of bees in the existing colony, which I believed was queenless. They accepted the nuc's queen. If the existing colony had killed the nuc's queen and they were truly queenless, they would just raise another one from the nuc's eggs.

    I've had to cut down some beautiful Privet recently building a shed for solar equipment. Nice big bushes I really hated to cut. More to go before I'm done.... Can't really call myself a beek anymore. Got one big hive that I haven't harvested in about 6 years. Diabetic and can't have it but love having the girls around. They swarmed twice within a couple of weeks. Both about 4 lbs worth. The first I didn't bother with the second I grabbed and put in a box and they are off to the races. Guess I needed to replace the one that I had in front of the house. Keeps the salesmen and doo gooders away.

    They pads last longer in the damper/cooler months. I noticed in Winter mine seemed to last around 3 months. I noticed in summer I'd replace them about once every month or so. I'd just watch for when they started drying out and add new ones. I used Pig-mat brand absorbent pads to make mine they seemed to work real well.

    Third comment on your channel so you are catching emails I am sure. We are now drilling “up hill” wine cork size holes above the handles of supers or double deeps for ventilation. It seems to keep moisture down. It gives them another entrance to supers for easier honey placement and you can stick a cork in it when you don’t need them flying from the extra entrance. In winter we are able to plug them as well.

    How long do you soak the pads before getting it out on the colonies, thanks

    • @rockridgebees1417
      @rockridgebees1417 6 місяців тому

      These types of industrial pads are made to absorb things, so they soak up the solution really quickly. I usually install the pads within a few days, but I don't see a reason why you couldn't do it after the solution cools and within a few hours.

    • @rockridgebees1417
      @rockridgebees1417 6 місяців тому

      Also, be sure when you make your pads that you use a recipe that your pads will fully absorb. My recipe is fully absorbed by the amount of pads that I use. There is a reason for the preciseness so that each pad holds a certain amount of solution and each colony receives the same treatment. Thanks

    I always have trouble with robbing when i put feed on boardman feeders. Your hives must all be strong

    • @rockridgebees1417
      @rockridgebees1417 7 місяців тому

      Yes, keeping strong hives across the board and entrances reduced year-round are important. Robbing can be an issue for some beekeepers, but I do not see boardman feeders causing a problem with the hives that I manage. I will probably do a video soon about the different options that I use for feeders and why I like certain feeders at certain times. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    You're Queen aint double lying. One of the worker bees has morphed Following the queen around laying bad eggs gotta take that hive about a 1/2. A mile away get all the bees out of the box real Queen and healthy Bees can make it back to the hi've. The bee it morphed will be too full of eggs to fly that far back.

    • @rockridgebees1417
      @rockridgebees1417 4 місяці тому

      This is a classic example of a queen that was failing and laying more than one egg in a cell. This colony is superceding the old queen. One of these queens is the mother and the other is the daughter. They will eventually kill or kick out the old queen. It is regular thing that happens.
