Downdraft #1 - draft quality Mandelbrot heightfield zoom
I did not get around to go exploring much. Here is a draft quality zoom; it looks blocky like Minecraft in places, and generally lower resolution. But it is animated at 60 frames per second, just to see what that looks like.
The crosshairs are a leftover from a 2D mode I am normally using for my explorations.

Braided Cloverphant - a brief mandelbrot heightfield zoom
Переглядів 19014 днів тому
I experimented with a higher resolution of some internal intermediate data. This is only a short, shallow, zoom computed on a laptop. The experiment basically failed, and turned out very noisy. I don't think UA-cam compression will like this. Still, I have to upload it and see what kind of video quality remains. The locations and vistas are somewhat interesting. I will return to this stairstep ...
Buglich - more fractal heightfield zooming

So ... let's try and reap some rewards from the new program version. This is a deeper zoom and higher detail than what I could do before. Still far from perfect, and still slow to compute (more than two weeks in this instance). The amount of variety is nice; and the journey as a whole is long enough to get lost a little along the way. I like it. As with anything I make, more artistic control wo...
Rough Descent - Mandelbrot Heightfield Zoom

Ah yes, the pieces are coming together nicely. This is a fairly low quality test case, with little to no art direction. It looks like the new program parts are mostly working. In theory I have much more control now over the journey. But in practice I still don't know what looks good and what doesn't. But things render quite a bit faster now, so I have more opportunity to explore and learn.

Just a small gem found on the wayside. I am still rewriting much of my program code with the goal to enable more heightfield zooms in the future. It's looking good so far: new multiprecision arithmetic using "double double" and "quad double" techniques. Took quite a while to wrap my mind around those, but that was necessary to implement them using AVX / AVX2 / AVX-512 for best performance. Ther...
Horse Coast Approach - fractal heightfield zoom

Here is another Mandelbrot fractal zoom, presented as elevation map. So the knowledgeable commenters of the previous video got this exactly right. For the most part this is a conventional fractal zoom animation piped through a heightfield renderer. This one is noisier than the first one. I don't really have the computational resources to produce these quickly and in high quality. I should proba...

Zooming into fractal heightfields has its pitfalls. The first few attempts were very bumpy rides. I eventually arrived at a two phase method, where some important animation parameters are determined only after the whole collection of elevation maps has been computed first. With that it was smooth sailing. It is still only a short trip, due to the large amount of computation required. Turned out...
Juggle a while ... juggle FOREVER!

Once upon a time, 38 or so years ago, the original "Juggler Demo" was released for the Commodore Amiga home computer. I re-animated the classic, with a lot of inspiration from the internet, where people have created their hommages long before I did. This is raytraced, and all surfaces (except the ground) are spheres, not triangle meshes. Originally the camera and sun were static; the demo used ...

No textured look this time. Instead, a larger, more sprawling structure. I am still undecided if I like this very different feel. There is no resemblance to plants or rocks. So maybe this is a bit of a "Bland Canyon" overall? Well, it seemed to be an experiment worth trying.

Tiled Tiles - Mandelbrot Heightfield Fractal

An experiment with a tiled appearance. I didn't find quite what I had in mind, so this is just a lower detail, lower resolution quick rendering. I had hoped for a puzzled together terrace, where the individual pieces were themselves tiled terraces. But the size difference of the two combined tilings is too much. Anyway, Happy Easter!

We have a reticule now 😃 And we've landed on another butterfly. I like that we see fewer clippings with the bounding box, especially at the front; a large portion of the time, the surface fills the entire frame.

The final destination is butterfly-like. I noticed that only sometime after I had found the 2D picture, because the "construction" isn't quite the same. (Where "construction" means influencing/tweaking the structures by using known side-effects of zooming into places adjacent to a structure to be tweaked.)

Hmm, actually ... UA-cam compression successfully managed to get rid of most of the noise, but still kept fractal detail intact. Impressive.

Am I seeing things, or is there some non-linear mapping going on?

    • @procedupixel213

The heights need to be bent heavily, dynamically for each location and magnification. Otherwise ramps and slopes would not look good. In fact, at the very start and at the very end, the landscape tends to become too flat. Near the beginning is all mesas and steep cliffs, and near the end things devolve towards a flat plain with a few mountain needles. I am still experimenting to improve this aspect. In any case, the heights are always a lie. The horizontal magnification factor and the vertical magnification factor are independent, regardless of the non-linear height shaping.

Sorry, no. I feel that my code is ugly and barely usable, even after the recent rewrites. Nevertheless I am honored that people find it intersting enough to ask. There certainly are some fragments that would be useful right away; and I could surely benefit from other people's contributions. So opening the code up is an option I have been considering again and again when requested. Everything is just so ... unfinished. And I keep rewriting parts from scratch. It's messy and not something to be proud of. 🙂

The core of it all is a boring straight line zoom to a destination point. To make it a bit more dramatic, I oscillate the center of this zoom movie around the center of the view (alternatively one could say the zoom movie is scrolling to and fro horizontally and vertically). Likewise I can slowly (or sometimes not so slowly) rotate the 2D view around the center. And finally this 2D zoom ride is rendered as elevation map, turning the smooth sailing into an exhilarating skydive straight out of an action flick. There is a slight bump at the end. I don't think it should be there, so I probably have a bug in the code that is meant to smooth out the whole path.

How many steps before escaping to infinity. Usually it go3s ibto a spiral and into one point, but sometimes it gets out of the spiral, and the less steps it takes, the higher it is. If it takes 0 steps, its at the highest point, and if it stays in, it is empty.

When i was a child, i was thinking what would come beyond smallest, and what comes beyond biggest. It was then i realised. Infinite has always been a circle, a cycle of infinite causality. After the biggest, comes the smallest and before the smallest comes the biggest. Before birth, comes death and after death comes birth. Finity originates from the limited perception of mortality, so only time creates limits. This was when i started to ask me a question for years. The time before my birth, is it the time after my death? Unexistence. Absence. Unperceivable. *it will never end, it has never begun*
