2024 Red Rose CX - Cat 3/4 - 7th/31
My team 717Cycling put on in its first cyclocross race, the Red Rose Cyclocross at Ship Rock Disc Golf Course in Willow Street, PA! It was a great event and I hope everyone else had as much fun as we did!
I accidentally didn't start the video until about 3mins into the race, so I don't have video evidence of me taking the holeshot and holding it for only about 30 seconds before about 13 people passed me on the start/finish hill haha. This course has a lot of climbing in it, with a long pretty flowy downhill recovery section after Pit 1. I was happy to work my way up to 7th with a group of 4 right in front of me on the last lap. Very fun and challenging race that we hope to be able to continue to put on in the coming years!

I always enjoy this course, fairly flat but fast with a bunch of 180-degree turns. I didn't have any PACX series points yet for this race, so instead of being front row callup I was back on the 3rd row, which I knew would make it quite a challenge to have a chance to battle with the leaders. I tried to really leave it all out there today and throw in some really big surges on the hill sections ...

Very tough and fun true mud cyclocross conditions, which are usually some of my best. I almost died during the starting spring when someone broke a chain and the field pushed to the right. I got pinched off and pushed into the yellow metal fencing. I suppose I was "lucky" I was able to push into the fencing with my forearm and keep my bars from catching the fence, but my right is definitely pre...

Check out 717Cycling's cyclocross race in Willow Street, PA (near Lancaster) on October 12, 2024! Registration at BikeReg Link: www.bikereg.com/67244 Another very warm day near 80F today. I really like the reversed (day 2) direction of this course, as the tight wooded section after the run-up flows a lot better for me. The first time through "double-trouble" at 4:55 made the mistake of trying t...

Fun day today at Falkorburg in Stevenson, MD. Finished 3rd out of 15 starters. Conditions were super dry in the late morning and much of the grass was worn away so there was a lot of hard-packed dirt. I really enjoy this course because it's fast and more technical than it looks because of the number of high-speed turns, pushing the limits of traction. Shout out to the Baltimore Bicycle Works Ra...

Overall went pretty well overall. I was running 6th until the start of the last lap and I hit some lapped traffic and made a few mistakes, so I got passed by a group of 3 guys. Couldn’t get back into the rhythm to stick with them then. ALSO - Check out 717Cycling's Red Rose Cyclocross upcoming race on October 12, 2024 in Willow Street PA! - www.bikereg.com/67244

Started out great near the front, but a few big attacks pushed me back quite a bit and ended up bringing up the very back of the remaining 32 riders (started with approximately 52). Happy to stay in the race more or less, since I usually have struggled to hang on at all in the Cat 3/4 fields compared to the Cat 4/5 races. HOT day but still a fun course with a lot of corners.

Fun race today, was thrilled that I was able to hang on and not get dropped with the surges out of turn 4. Some scary close calls with some squirrelly riding out there, so pardon my french a few times 😬. Shout out to my teammate for a 3rd place in the sprint!

First time at the Smoketown Airport Criterium near Lancaster, PA. I was happy to hang in and not get dropped on the first crit of the year. I was feeling a little bit of cyclocross in me (#crossiscoming), so I spent some time riding the grass on the exit of the last turn haha. This race is the first of a two day race weekend in the Lancaster area with Race Avenue Criterium to follow tomorrow.

Super wet and muddy day today at Capital Cross in Reston, VA. These kind of conditions are usually my best, so I was looking forward to a good race. This course is also usually very technical and fun. I slowly worked my way up through the field to 4th and then battled back and forth with 3rd for the last lap and a half or so. It came down to a sprint finish and unfortunately for me sprints are ...

Really fun and challenging course in Bel Air, MD. I made a bad choice to try to hop the concrete step near the end of the lap with no speed and failed epically, causing a rim-strike and putting a small cut into my rear tire. About 30 seconds later I felt the tire get bouncy and flat, so I had to ride gingerly back to the pits to switch bikes! Unfortunately I also don't have any video from the r...

Super tough technically and physically today at Frosty Cross in Cockeysville, MD. I think this is probably the most difficult course I've ever done haha. Lots of climbing early in the lap, lots many surface changes from grass to gravel and asphalt, very challenging an a lot of ways to make mistakes and lose time. Most of the turns at the bottom of the hills you have to slow nearly to a stop to ...

Great work - Still very dry here in Seattle... race 6 and still on file treads. Are you using a older Garmin? Just curious on your recording setup. Check out my races on my page.... Way to go you get hr and rpms just right!
@@ShawnPeerson Yeah man, so far Charm has been the only race that hasn’t been completely bone dry and even dusty so far this year! Crazy. I’m actually using a Wahoo Elemnt Bolt and a GoPro Hero 9, but with the old Garmin Virb Edit software. I have to do a few tweaks to get 4k/60fps out of it and use ShutterEncoder for merging the video file pieces first, so I don’t have to re-encode the videos and lose quality.
I raced day one on cat 5 and I died the entire time 😂. I was dead set on skipping it right up until pre ride.
Damn I thought 4/5 was a shit show cat 3 is even worse
@@gavin7035 Yeahhh, there’s a lot of fast kids in Cat 3 but sometimes I think they miss their pedals and things can get messy up front. In this case though it was apparently a broken chain, but man it was not a fun experience! I think Charm start is often worse than most because of the turn, and the mud on the asphalt wasn’t helping either!
@JSlade11 but also you kinda ran into the back of a bunch or riders?
@@myoung14I don’t really think so, I didn’t hit anybody. The whole field suddenly moved hard to the right and we were suddenly braking very hard once the guy broke his chain. It’s difficult to go from a full sprint start to slowing suddenly when you don’t know what happening in front. I hit the barrier with my arm in order to avoid getting into and taking out any riders.
Wow thank you for posting this and further reaffirming my decision to skip both days. See you later this season I'm sure!
@@BadTanLines Aww man, but you’re missing out on the fun true cyclocross Belgian mud conditions (except not that cold yet)! 😜🇧🇪
Great video. Quality is A+. You’re so fast. You were flying. Wow.
Thanks man, glad you enjoyed it! It was a fun and fast day there for sure.
Nice riding. The young Jr that crashed on double trouble that you avoided took a good fall. Way to avoid him.
@@paulkonifka Thanks man! Yeah, I was still on my bike on that downhill so kind of got stuck on it and couldn't get off the bike in the traffic. I felt pretty bad for him, when I passed him I could tell he was hurting but fortunately Kerry Werner was there helping him then. Hopefully he's back up and racing quickly.
I was there. I was the dead last year in Cat 5 lol
Hey, you gotta start somewhere! Not on the couch is a place lol
@@JSlade11 for sure, doing Hyattsville tomorrow and Charm City next weekend
Nice lines man! You made me and a lot of the other guys look foolish out there!
Haha thanks man, this was definitely my ideal conditions!
Great racing out there yesterday brotha hell of a fight I placed 14th so not to far behind ya
Thanks man, you too! Was a great day for the season opener.
Nice!! I I missed this race
@@cyclingronniehedges823 I missed the race too! It went up the road on me on the last lap! 😅
Thank you for sharing! I was the photographer in the blue shirt towards the top of the hill in the cemetery early in the race!
Oh nice, no problem! Hope you got some good shots!
"Alpha" mismatched socks looks like he's never encountered a turn before...
When everyone takes a breather -- add a few more watts and move up.
Way to show em how to ride it!!!! Awesome work!
Thanks! I love it when it's these conditions to put the skills to the test!
Great racing. Looks like a fun course
Thanks! This has been a really fun course the last two years, and muddy CX conditions made it a great ending to the season.
Nicely done. Pulling out 4th with a bike switch is no easy task. What's your setup for recording/posting? What do you use for the map, gauges, power, etc? Keep posting man - I subscribed. Looking forward to the next one.
Thanks man! What you also don't see is how badly the swap in the pit went! The bike rack was full and I didn't have anyone pitting for me, so I must have spent 25 seconds getting my pit bike and racking my main bike. I rarely have to pit so I was woefully unpracticed at it lol. It was fun trying to move back up. Sadly CX season around me has ended for the year though =(. I've been using a GoPro Hero9 and processing my videos with the old Garmin VirbEdit program with the .fit data file for the gauges/map. Garmin stopped supporting the software and Google now changed something with the maps data, so you get an error message and can't as easily line up the start of the data file and the video. It can still be used, but you have to trial and error adjusting the start time of the data with a slider until the data timing matches up.
Took till the last race of the year but I finally got you in one!! Great season and great race!! See ya next year. Keep up the great content
Haha yeah, nice job out there you got me good. Definitely a good and fun race. Thanks!
Course looks so sick. Nice ride 🤘
damn, this was cool to watch :) didnt expect to stay here that long^^
I was there. I live in bmore. Next time would love to meet and greet. I run Do The Bike Thing bike org.
Jeff, with your permission, I would like to use a lap of this footage and add my own narration to it as a way to show cyclocross to those who might be interested in it. In the description I would give you credit for the footage and list your channel for those who want to see the entire race.
Sure, that would be fine with me. Thanks for asking. It would be great to get more people interested and to grow the sport!
I love cross. Where else are you going to get a spectator revving a chainsaw (or some other motor) has motivation?
Heck yeah, Cross is boss, hoss!
Great race!
Thanks! I have fun on that course!
Thank you Jeff, I can relive this great course! I rode at 10:15, looks like the mud really improved 😅
Sure thing! Yeah, I didn't see the mud at 10:15am but later on it started getting thicker and sketchy with the bumps in it! I slowed down in the mud a lot after almost crashing in it half way through the race lol.
Great vid, as always!
were you using gopro's image stabilization for this? looks great!
Yeah, I think I had it on Hypersmooth 3.0 - High level and it is amazing what it can do. On Boost mode it's almost too smooth, makes it look like you're on smooth road lol
@@JSlade11 pretty awesome, i need to turn that on next time.
Pretty epic start to the season
Yeah man, that was pretty wild with the thunderstorm lol. Good racing though!
Great Race!!
Thanks, you too!
Good race. Try to draft more it will save you energy. It is also hard to draft specially if you come from MTB first like me.
Thanks for the tip. Yes, I'm much less comfortable riding very close on asphalt than I am off-road in CX or MTB. It's definitely a major weakness for me. I also don't deal really well with the big surges out of the corners unfortunately!
@@JSlade11 same here. I just started getting comfortable drafting this year. I go to GV30 crit training and it is free
@@XavenMonsalud Nice, GV30 is definitely excellent training and seems to be working out for you!
@@JSlade11 The surges are due to being in the back of the pack -- the front group just rolls through at a constant speed -- those in the back often have to slow, then sprint. That 40-60 hard sprints in one race. Much better to be ready to blast off at the start and make it to the front group!
@@cbtpro Yeah, I'm going to really try to get to the start line earlier, start closer to the front and fight to avoid falling back to begin with.
Nice video. What video editing program you use? It's very hot day.
Thanks. I'm using Shutter Encoder to merge multiple GoPro10 files without compressing or re-encoding. Then using the old Garmin Virb Edit 3.6 to overlay the .fit file telemetry onto the video. Congrats on the W out there, you guys were keeping the pace hammered all day long up there.
Good job in reflection.
Wish we had some snow like this for the 2023 winter. What a depressing winter it has been so far. Looks like a great time.
Yep it was a pretty great event, was looking forward to again this year but with this weather who knows?? Definitely the worst winter sport weather so far this year!
@@JSlade11 I really feel sorry for the snowmobiles also this season seeing as I was once having a machine for 10 seasons. I'd have to had my head examined this season if I still owned it.
@@paulmazzola398 Ahh jeez yeah, that's crazy. I know when I was driving around up there those snowmobiles were all over the place. I'm hoping it'll at least get good enough for a few days of skiing this season!
Thanks for recording , GoPro. Really enjoyed it
Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed it!
tee hee, u can hear me
That had to have been a fun time though.
Yeah it was fun racing and watching the Pros on Sunday. It was snowing for the Elite Men and the conditions were super slick!
15 hand ups? That's impressive 😄 Getting gearing right is crucial. I have 38T x 42T rear and still struggled on those climbs. I saw Nats is mudfest today so who needs gears?
Haha, yeah I was not really feeling up to the handups during this race due to how much I was struggling already! I'm not that great at singlespeed yet so I'm a bit nervous about the mud I see at Nationals so far this week. I'm hoping it dries up by the time I get there Saturday!
what a fun day. thanks for sharing!
Great video
Thanks, glad you liked it!

You put two data files together from the two bikes to make this?
I actually have a powermeter on both bikes and I swapped my computer when I switched bikes, so it picked up the other powermeter right away (to my surprise) and kept recording. The GPS data was really messed when it was on my main bike because the GoPro causes interference with the Wahoo.
Good race. Funny see me run through the bottle neck section on starting lap😅
Haha thanks! Yeah it was a pretty crazy starting lap this year, lots of trying to pass and getting passed right back in the twisties!
I also raced last year. Out of curiosity, what tire pressure did you run and are you running tubeless?
I'm pretty lightweight at about 140lb, and I don't seem to run as "super low pressure" as some others I hear mention, but I use tubeless 35mm wide (measured) mud tires all-season. I typically run between 25-26psi rear and 23-24psi front, depending how rocky/rooty the course is. I absolutely recommend tubeless for CX, because otherwise I would probably have to run 6+ psi higher to avoid pinch flats and have much worse traction as well as a much bumpier ride.
Do you remember if they enforce tire width limits at this event?
Nope, they only enforce tire width limits at UCI C1 or C2 races and only in the UCI categories. Some people have definitely raced on MTBs.
what a cool setup
Thanks, it was a really fun track layout for pit bikes! It's not my property, but oh do I wish it was lol
Never done cyclocross, only some gravel No mud or anything like that but i like this event...thinking on doing it .
Nice, cross is boss! It’s definitely different than gravel, but I find it to be much more fun and exciting! I enjoy gravel riding for training but love technical mountain biking and cyclocross is like a cross between the two.
You had 2nd step in your cross hairs. Nice work!
Thanks Brandon! It was a close one, I just needed another half lap!
Nice job dude 🤘 Such a fun course
I was there watching when the tape came off. Ayeee... Nice ride though!
These are all great videos. Keep it up!
Thanks man, glad you enjoyed!
Love the video, thanks for posting! Looks like you may have gotten screwed on the official rankings after the review...
Thanks man, glad you liked it! Yes, there were definitely some issues with timing because the lead peloton lapped a group of riders right at the end, so timing lost track of who was on the lead lap and who wasn’t after the lead 10 riders or so. I was told there were 14 in the lead peloton so I am pretty sure I ended up 15th. Tough race with getting stuck behind some crashes right off the bat.
@@JSlade11 Yeah definitely a technical course which lead to some crashes. At least it wasn't raining. I was the guy in the blue neopro kit at the beginning. Great racing with you, hope to see you at another one!
Appreciate this post very much! Superb riding you did! Great for my mag trainer! 👌
Awesome, thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
