Generator found in the trash. Will it run again?
I found this generator at the dump. This video covers what is wrong with it and what it will take to get it running again. The hour meter said it has 885 hours on it.

What rebuild kit did you use
Is ti worth it? Nope. Go buy a 15 horse and buy a 9.9 hood for it, and call it a day.
Good job
Awesome man, just picked up one of these off FB marketplace for $125. It's definitely not as bad off as the one at the start of your video, but I think I will do a similar tear-down just to give it the TLC it deserves. They definitely don't make them like they used to, this thing is a beast! Great video.
Would this work with an old 9.5?
Easy to the point. Only question on the sun gear you did not line up oil hole feed to shaft does it really matter if they line up?
Fastest my 9.9 has done is 22mph, with no wind. Debating if it’s worth it or not. The 15hp also seems to have a larger throttle valve. Still debating wether to look for a parts motor or if I should just have it machined
That sounds great out there on the water.
You can put all your to make it smooth
dont ever let that old girl go!
That was awesome to see that clutch pack heat welded together.
Are the props on the 9.9 and 15 the same? Could you run a steeper pitch with the 15 for more speed now with the added power?
Nice but dam it needs to be in a V-Drive. 😳😬 just say n.
You should get some kind of award for not putting 2 minutes of information in a 15-minute video! Really excellent information, audio, and video. I can't believe this doesn't have a million views, likes, and comments. Thanks a bunch!
Check parts diagrams for both. Reeds and exhaust may differ.
If this just worked on all johnsons.
Very informative video. Keep up the good work!
what fuel mixture for this engine is 1:100 or 1:50
1:50
I had a late 70's 9.9 that I changed to a 15 and in addition to a different carb, there was also a spacer that allowed the reed valves to open more. It was a great running motor until I let a friend drive the boat. He made a sharp turn at high speed and the motor tore off of the transom and went to the bottom of the creek. It's still there if anybody wants it!
bet
If it was mounted correctly it would not fall off not your friends fault yours
What does the knob on the handle , I try to play with mine but don't see waht it does?? Thanks, and good video
This is really relaxing to watch. Looking forward to the next video ❤
Really like the pace of the video, great description of the issues too
Enjoyed this 1st episode of the Generator revival and looking to next episode when you rebuild the motor.
I have the same but slilghty smaller gen set 7500 starting and 6500 running eleectric start great little unit 👊
Great video. I have subbed to the Giant Crescent Wrench channel :P
i have a 1998 johnson 9.9 and 15hp models. Both vary low hour motors. they both will idle down to almost nothing. the 15 screams top end but seems to stumble mid range were the 9.9 remains smooth. i think the cylinder porting are different between the two. maybe thats why i only see 9.9's on sailboats
Porting is identical. Differences between the 9.9 and 15 vary depending on year but in most cases it’s the carb, the exhaust tube, and the reed block spacers added to the 15. Low end torque is identical between the two so that’s why the 9.9 was more common on sailboats. There was also a dedicated long shaft sail version of the 9.9.
Did you swap out the prop as well to account for the extra horsepower? I’m thinking that a 33% increase in horsepower would require more pitch at the same RPM.
Huhhh?
You have also change to the turned exhaust tube that 15hp has. If you put more gas in you have to gas more exhaust out also to be 15hp
👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
That's about right. My Evenrude went from 9.9 hp 30 kph 15 hp 35 kph. My 15hp Nissan goes 40 kph
Easiest way to take off the carb is to take off the fuel tank and covers. Easiest way I've found. I had the same trouble with my 2005 vinson. It wouldn't idle and mine turned out to be the o-ring on the air fuel screw. It had dried out and wasn't sealing. Be careful not to lose the washer behind it as the screw will tear the hell out of the o-ring. For my vinson the magic number for the air fuel screw is about 2.5 turns out from bottom. Pretty simple little carb, but can make you mad as hell too.
Where did you find a carb I have same year motor I’d love to do the swap but can’t find a carb
Yea where can we get the carb from?
what type alternator bracket and alternator did you ues
Best tear down video I've seen...thanks...slow and methodical and named every part.
i was told you can do the same with a mercury .
It aint got no gas in it ?
Is the river deep enough at any spot for a 16' aluminum bass boat?
My 2008 90 does the same thing. Checked everything. Going to try to fit this in. Great idea. Thanks for the video.
Shame you didn't show the rebuild. Ie float adjustment. Idle. Etc.
Well done sir. Seriously
Kinda surprised me how well that thing moves for such a small motor
Ill it troll as nice with the larger carburetor?
no definitely not!
That's one way to make your johnson bigger😊
What's next? Cut the cylinder to set squish and some porting? 😂
Stroker
I would love to have this motor. These gems are tough to come by.
same
I have this motor and can confirm it’s a fuggin work horse and I dk if I’ll ever sell it 🤙🏼
I have a 2005 9.9 Johnson that I bought new, and it’s still in the box, never run!
@ScreamAndFly Want to sell it to me?
I have a 94 15 hp and love it.
Thanks so much. This video inspired me to pull the carb. Took it to a friend who has a carb bath. Runs like new!
Please help /. Where does the long hose go. About min 3:04. You can see it clearly.
Yeah!! A build video
That bottom screw you turned out 1 or 1 & half. Is that the fuel mixture ?
I got a sonic cleaner & boy do they work good
