Portable Modular Railroads
United States
Приєднався 23 гру 2024
For model railroad hobbyists who want to make their model railroads portable for whatever reason. I'm Dave and I've been working for a few years on refining a modular system to make your model railroads portable, and economical. My system has three layers: 1. A set of lightweight wood modules that serve as a baseboard, they can be bolted together. 2. The second layer is a sub-roadbed of pink extruded polystyrene layered in levels that serve as elevations. 3. A scenery layer of white expanded polystyrene detailed to your liking. I am building on a baseboard size of 100x200 centimeters, about 3'2'' by 6'5". I like N-scale but you can make these modules any size and for any scale you want. I like 50x50 centimeter modules because they fit great inside standard packing boxes. My entire model railroad fits inside 3 packing boxes with room to spare. Watch the videos on how I build portable modular railroads.
How to Make Realistic Foam Tunnel Portals for Model Railroads #09
Make model railroad tunnel portals yourself economically. You can remove them to work on your scenery base or to move your modules without damaging them. This requires a lot of time, it probably takes about 6 hours. DYI Train Tunnel Portals that look like real stone.
In this video, I'll show you how to create realistic pink foam board portals for model railroad tunnels. Follow along as I guide you through the step-by-step process, from cutting and shaping the foam to painting and detailing the final look. Here's a quick breakdown of what you'll learn:
Cutting foam board for the tunnel shape using a box cutter and hot knife.
Adding details like brick lines with an X-Acto knife and pencil.
Painting techniques, including gray washes and shading for a realistic finish.
Creating and attaching foam board pillars for added realism.
This project took about 4 hours to complete, but the results are worth it! Whether you're building a portable modular railroad or working on your home layout, this tutorial will help you craft stunning tunnel portals.

A lot of effort but the result is great 👍
Muchas gracias por compartir, quedó muy lindo!
De nada, me da gusto servirle!
I like your method for making the portals
Super appreciate it. I takes about six hours but I think it was worth it.
Yes it took about 6 hours. Thats a lot probably but i wanted something different. Thanks?
Now that's a tree I'd totally climb!
If you were 1.2 mm high! Thanks
Now that's totally Awesome! Thanks for sharing.
Hey I super appreciate it. There are still a few tricks left in this old dog. Take care!
You can use plain toilet roll too it comes up nicely
Thanks for the tip I will try that, probably makes it more detailed!
Yes 👍
Nicely done!
I appreciate the comment! Enjoy.
Watched whole series, nice idea.
Glad you got something out of it!
I like the idea of the wood dowel as a plug
Thanks! It took me a while to get clarity on that, now I have to build 120 trees.
Excellent tutorial
I appreciate the comment! Thank you.
Cool ideas! Thanks for sharing!
Glad they are useful. Take care.
Excellent series so far! Love the cool graphics and the clear, easy to understand directions! Keep it up good sir!
I apreciate very much the encouragement. New video soon.
Check out my new video on modular trees. Thanks!
I like this system. But alot of rail joints. If I am seeing into the future.
Yes, but i will not glue the track to rhe sub roadbed. Trying to come up with a detachable roadbed for normal track. Ant suggestions?
@PortableModularRailroads I've thought about something like this for awhile. Though you have put it in to practice. One suggestion though, would be to put some wax paper between separation breaks when adding scenery, or you want something removable. Two; for the track. It needs it's own platform. Perhaps styrene sheet topped by cork roadbed. Cut to conform. There is also very thin plywood (though it may bow. Still if used sparingly. Maybe), There are track spikes, which are removable.
why are you wearing a mask?
First videos filmed in 2020
One thing i would do is paint the areas under the track to tie the scene together
I plan to cover the pink sub roadbed with a detachable roadbed for normal track but yes it needs paint. What color? Thanks!
I would do dark earth tone in the hills to give the feeling of shadows, and a medium to light brown in the open areas
Excellent rock face carvings and scenery work in general!
Thank you for the compliment! I plan to do way more detail on those little mountains.
Check out my new video on modular trees. Thanks!
@PortableModularRailroads Will do!
Really enjoying this series, finding the "how toos" very helpful. Keep them coming.
I'm really glad they are helping! I have a new one coming soon. Thanks!!
Check out my new video on modular trees. Thanks!
What thickness foams are you using
Hi. One inch on both.
@ awesome thanks for getting back with me
If you have access to 2 inch pink foam you are able to do a river in that first layer. Happy modeling!
Maybe cut layers 2 and 3 at the same time. I haven't tried this so it may sound easier than it is to actually do it. Nice work, nonetheless.
Thanks, I think with clamps holding unglued peices together will work, did not have enough clamps. I appreciate it!
nvere thought of sawdust before. Smart. Thanks for sharing your ideas.
Your welcome! Thanks for commenting. Take care.
Check out my new video on modular trees. Thanks!
Just watched all 6 videos. Very good explanations. This layout is starting to look great. Looking forward to the next segments.
Wait until you see the detail come in. Thanks for the comment! I really appreciate it.
Check out my new video on modular trees. Thanks!
Interesting ideas and great reults. Subscribed!
Thank you! I appreciate the encouragement. PMR

Why are you switching to white foam board for the scenery?
Good question, it is a little thinner in height and it's "cheaper". But you can use the pink. Thanks for the comment!! PMR
You can get the pink as thin as 1/2" for a good price
My suggestion would be to use the first layer as a template for the one.
Yes I get it, you just clamp the unglued pieces to the next layer right?
Yep, that will leave you with larger pieces of foam to use for inclines or low level hills
