This is how bad it is, some people do not have multiple cell phones in a household. Instead, they share one phone.

The hurricane insurance rates are outrageous now. Think through your decision to buy a condo right now unless you are okay with wasting several thousand dollars a year for nothing. Also, some of these newer condos have issues. Do your due diligence: review HOA reserves, meet with the building manager, and speak with both new and long-term owners. The "Landmark" is probably one of the best built condominiums on the island.

I live in Kailua on windward side but I know and love the are in this video. If you rent a room anywhere within a few miles you can bike in and enjoy it. People sometimes ask about “island fever” and I reply “ I got rest of the world fever”.

The only people who make money are the builders, especially Howard Huges. Ninety percent of those who bought these condos in the area you are referring to after 2018 are losing money, not to mention the time and 30% downpayment that these builders require to lock you in. Look up zillows to these new condos pricing in 2018 and compare to now and you will see the real #.

I’ve been living in Kailua condo for 10 years and I think it’s great. I hardly ever go to the South side but I must say some of these new buildings look great. I think loads of mainlanders will be looking hard at Hawaii very soon. Don’t forget Kailua, it’s fantastic place. My condo doesn’t need aircon and I don’t need a car.

The increased insurance rates also apply to buildings which are not at all at risk for hurricanes. In essence its a stealth tax. For now they use the catastrophy in Lahaina and force us to pay for that indirectly by more than doubling rates. Is there any backstop or can the insurance companies just raise the rates at will? There is no alternative in Hawaii as we have an insurance monopoly and we are forced to have this terrible condo insurance. This makes ppl homeless.
