This channel is all about the work (that doesn't actually feel like work) needed to keep up with our home and property. Last year was all about interior renovations with this year allowing time to concentrate on the great outdoors. Follow along and watch our journey and maybe learn a few tricks, or maybe you will teach us a few :-)
Predator 3500 Review after 4 years of use...
I have had this Predator 3500 generator inverter from Harbor Freight for going on 5 years and have used it for multiple purposes. In this video I talk about some of the things I learned over the years specific to this unit and also share my process for a quick oil change.

One side of auger is DEAD. Broken Shear Bolt?
Переглядів 1,1 тис.Місяць тому
The right side of the snowblower auger stopped spinning during use. I found one of the shear-bolts was broken so overall it was an easy fix. In this video I talk about what I find, how I fixed it and also give some basic info on shear bolts.

This is a quick video on the install, removal, use and my personal opinion of the Ratchet Rake Snow Edge. This is not a sponsored video and at the time of recording, I have no affiliation with the company. I bought this 4-5 years ago to use on my 2025R removing snow from a paved driveway.
Snowblower dead, again. I would have NEVER thought THIS could happen. What I found and how I fixed!

I was originally going to make a quick basic video about the 47" Deere snowblower but quickly ran into an issue that stopped me dead in my tracks. In this video I will diagnose and repair the issue. I never would have guessed this would happen. Very strange for sure.
John Deere X590 with 47" Snowblower and a problem...

This was supposed to be a basic snowblower video but I ran into a snag. I talk a little bit about the problem here but created another video where I diagnose and repair the root cause since it was fairly in-depth. If interested, a link to that video is posted in the comments. Otherwise this video is an example of running the John Deere X590 with a 47" two-stage snowblower attached.
Deere X590 Snow Blower Belt Install & Removal
Переглядів 576Місяць тому
I have been struggling to install and remove the snow blower drive belt on my Deere X590. I initially thought it was because the belt was new but after doing some reading, found out that its not an uncommon issue. This video shows my method and is for entertainment purposes only. Always follow the manufacturer instructions when working on your equipment.
Using the tractor to plow leaves?

I have been moving piles of leaves like this for a few years with good success. I started ith the plow on my Deere X530. I have since started strapping plywood to the forks on the 2025R with good results.
X530 200 Hour Service - Oil - Oil Filter - Spark Plugs - Air Filter - Fuel Filter
Переглядів 2962 місяці тому
A family member asked me to complete the 200 hour service on their 2012 Deere X530 so I thought that would be a good opportunity to make a video. Pretty straight forward with no major issues but I do share several tips and tricks throughout. I still need to complete the transaxle fluid and filter change but that will be a later date and separate video.
Log Splitter Repair. Replacing Coupling Insert. Easy...
Переглядів 2892 місяці тому
A couple weeks ago I was splitting firewood with my Cub Cadet 27-ton log splitter manufactured by MTD when it stopped. The motor was running fine but I had no hydraulic power. I found that there was an issue with the coupling between the motor and hydraulic pump which is what I look at in this video.

This was supposed to be a basic video, just splitting some wood. About a third of the way through the load of logs, the splitter stopped. The engine was still running fine but the hydraulics just stopped. I did end up figuring out the issue later in the video which will require a part I don't have. That will be another video...
Box Blade Lower Driveway Repair
Переглядів 3133 місяці тому
The lower part of my driveway is on a slight hill which has resulted in some washout and erosion over the past couple years. I am going to make some quick repairs using the box blade on my Deere 2025R. At some point I will need to improve the drainage but for now, I just want to do a quick-fix before winter sets in.
X590 Deere Snow Blower Removal

This is a quick video showing my process for removing the 47" snowblower from a Deere X590 garden tractor. This process is the same for the X580, X584 and X590. The X570 is a little different since it does not have the hydraulic lift function.

This video follows along as I install the 47" snow blower on a X590 for the first time. I ran into an issue (my fault) that took some extra time that I show in this video. I previously ran this blower on my X530 but that tractor has been retired. This 2012 snow blower isn't directly compatible with this 2024 model year X590 so I had to install a conversion kit. That video is available on my cha...

I’ve watched 3 (I think - maybe 4?) of your videos now, and you’ve definitely earned my sub! I usually eschew longer videos like yours, but yours don’t really have any “fluff” or (what is prevalent with SO many other UA-camrs) incessant jabbering. Just really great descriptions, directions, and explanations - the way instructional and/or review videos ought to be! I’m really looking forward to checking out more of your vids. And BTW, you’ve made me want the whole BXpanded line for my JD 3038e! My wife MAY not end up being very happy with you - lol! Thanks for what you do, and be blessed!
Thank you so much for taking the time to comment, I really do appreciate it. I try not to drone on too long, but honestly, I can get long-winded sometimes and try to edit all that fluff out. Still learning all this video stuff and will continue to improve over time. Thank you for subscribing. 🙂
@HobbyUniverseOutdoors now that you mention editing, that's another comment I was going to make, but didn't want to make my initial comment too long. You do a very fine job of editing, creating a smooth and esthetically pleasing product. Really nice job.
I have one it is a very good machine and it will become another JD icon legend I live in the country and don't mow golf courses if you know what I mean so far it has lived up to expectations!
Thank you for taking time to comment. I really am happy with mine, no regrets. 🙂
Thanks for this. The review and clarity of information was helpful in making my decision to go and buy one last evening. I need to unbox and first start it this weekend. You explained exactly the type of situations when I would need to use it. I think its an all around great unit for the price and recommended uses.
Glad it was helpful, you made the right decision! I have no regrets on mine.
What's crazy is that hardware stores sell locktite and bolts. You could go there and buy them to solve your problem.
Local hardware store was closed the day I was working on it. I did end up ordering some Loctite from Amazon and have it on hand for next time. 👍
JD is making the newer ones cheaper now. Plastic impellers, plastic discharge chute, cheaper gearboxes and more.
I agree, plastic in more places than I would like to see. Sometimes it makes sense, but not on everything. Especially the chute.
If you get in position were the pull cord breaks you will hate not having that electric start
Somebody else commented something similar. I really hadn’t thought of that but I do agree. I’ll likely just replace the battery. 👍
Great video as I was thinking about buying a used snow blower from a X540 for an X590. Do you know what the difference was between the two gear boxes or is it a mounting or pulley size difference? In other words, why was the conversation needed?
It was a combination of things. The gearbox geometry was different due to how the new connection bracket mounted. There was no way to get it lined up with the existing.

Thanks for taking the time to watch the video. 🙂
I Love my Predator..wouldn't have wanted any other ! I do have to. Thank you for showing this oil change process
I agree, no regrets on my purchase either. 🙂
I had the same problem, fighting with the new belt to get it on, ended up lifting the front of blower up 4 or 5 inches, struck 2x4s under it, boom got it on. I’m going out this morning and measure how high the snowblower lifts when I use the hydraulic left button, it’s not 5".
Someone else replied that they used a clamp for the pulley. He sent me a quick video and it’s actually fairly slick. I haven’t tried it yet, but I’m going to. Once I do that if it’s a better option, I may do a real quick video on that as well.
@ yes I tried that too, still no joy, but after I lifted the front of the blower, I got it on.
I might give your method a try. If I’m able to do it without busting out any tools, that’s always a good thing.
Ditto. had mine for about 4 years also. Just replaced 1 battery. and changed oil. Love it.
Absolutely, no regrets. Looks like the batteries pretty inexpensive and not a surprising piece of maintenance. Thanks for taking the time to comment. 👍
Does the Predator 3500 Inverter run your RV air conditioner? Thank you!
I haven’t used it for the air conditioning yet but I have to believe that it would handle it. Our camper is not very big so the AC units also not very big. When I run something that’s power hungry I try not to fire up things like the microwave or anything else at the same time.
Nice, informative video. Thanks very much, and happy new year!
Thanks Jay, happy new year to you as well.
Thanks - I fell for the be environmentally friendly and get a solar generator. Decided to get a Bluetti power station. Biggest mistake I ever made because have had nothing but headaches. Totally useless customer service, got and gave people the sh!TS a few times because the food went bad courtesy of the Bluetti powering my fridge. My @$& is still raw from that. I think I destroyed a small lake trying to wash my @$& after the numerous sh:ts.
Friend of ours had a solar generator but a different brand. They were also not impressed. And while I feel bad that you got sick from food that spoiled, dude that’s hilarious the way you tell it. Nothing fun about a serious case of swamp butt. 😂😂
Thank you. You are an articulate guy and the video is well done. Thanks for explaining the oil change procedure. I’ve been thinking of purchasing one of these for months. Think I will buy one before we have another blackout.
Thank you, I appreciate the feedback. While I will never say someone should buy something, I will share my experience, good or bad and mine with this unit so far has been excellent.
You should probably get used to electric start if that recoil breaks you gona see how difficult it is to change the rope. I use it as backup not my preferred starting way
That’s a good point, I hadn’t thought of that. Might be a good idea to replace the battery after all. 👍
Wouldn't piss on a kawasaki engine but would use as a boat anchor next door property bought one and boy what an unreliable crud
I’ve had a few over the years and this is the first time I’ve had a problem. I believe the previous owner didn’t take good care of the unit based on some other things I noticed.
Good to see you like it. Looks like a nice unit. No regerts 😂
lol, “no regerts”. I see what you did there. 😆
Well done video!
I appreciate you watching!
Can you sow the plow on the x590
I believe I can still use the plow after the conversion. Most of the changes happened on the blower itself. I wont know for sure until I try which probably will be this spring. I will provide a quick update once I do that.
Amazon link for the item I purchased. I have no affiliation. a.co/d/27gMtXR
Looks like your missing a grease zerk in that hole to the right of your shear pin.
I did see the extra hole and wasn't sure what its for. I will need to look at it closer.
Great video! How many hours are on your 530?
Hours on the x530 in this video has a little over 300 on it. Much too low for a catastrophic failure. I purchased used and after having it for a while I saw signs that it was neglected. I’m hoping to take the motor out and see if I can fix it. If not, I may replace it if I can find a good deal on a new motor.
Len, as promised here is a link to a video showing how I use a Quick-Grip clamp to remove the tension of the idler pulley on the 47" snowblower. ua-cam.com/video/LuayqiPj69A/v-deo.html
@@dwayneshrader9065 What a great idea! I have similar clamps that I can try. I might not even wait until spring. 🙂
I wish I would have bought the Hla forks for my Massey. My forks were clearance at rural king and weight 320 pounds so really limits what I can do with them.
I understand. It was actually another UA-camr that said something about the weight that made me think consider that before buying. Otherwise I would have got the heavy duty since in most cases HD is stronger.
The issue is that Deere wants 10k plus for the x590, and another 3-4k for the blower.... it is criminal
Years ago, I bought a cub cadet that I thought was similar to the Deere , but was cheaper. Turned out that cheaper meant exactly that. While I do agree that the John Deere stuff is higher priced and I’m sure there’s an up-charge for the green paint, I still feel it as a good value compared to other options. Just my opinion and your results might vary. 🙂
Reach around. Bwahahahahahaha!
Lol, I was wondering if anyone would catch that…
I'll be taking ownership of an x590 with blower next month and appreciate the tips and techniques I've picked up from your channel. Small thing hardly worth mentioning, I personally like using a nut with a self-locking feature in applications like this. On another note, I'm sure you've looked into replacing your broken shoot with the JD metal equivalent, may be a good option if it's compatible. 👍
@@jcknwmn916 I haven’t looked at a metal option yet, but if it exists, that would be awesome! Definitely will look into it. You should be very happy with your new set up. I’m pleased with mine. I do run four suitcase weights, as well as chains. For me, they make a huge difference. Probably going to put together a video specifically on that subject in the next week or so.
The John Deere sheer bolt is actual metric grade ten bolt
If that’s the case, a metric grade 10.9 bolt is equivalent to a standard grade 8 bolt. I’ve looked and looked, but can’t seem to find any information specific to the John Deere shear bolts for the snowblower. Do you know where I can get this information? Would love to have it to reference.
@@HobbyUniverseOutdoors Part Number19M7834 Remarks M6 X 45 bolt Part Number14M7397 Remarks M6 lock nut John Deere Parts used to show it was a grade 10 but doesn't now. I don't know the price now, they were $1.50 each
Can't believe the shaft and pully isn't keyed, even more unbelievable is you found the bolt.
I agree at 100% on both! Especially finding the bolt. When I was taking the snowblower apart, it actually fell out and I wasn’t even sure what it was for. Thought it might’ve been from something else. Once I realized I needed it to hold that pulley on. It blew me away. Super lucky.
You really shouldn’t operate that tiller or any PTO Implement at or near idle. Lugging a diesel is bad. I have the same tractor and a king cutter professional 60in I got back in 2020. Many people told me it was too big for my tractor, but I’ve had no problems.
I appreciate the comment. I dont remember where rpms were at when I made the video but I usually shoot for 2100. I watched the video again and it does sound low. Could be the weird noise cancellation on my old mic or possibly (and likely) I was more worried about making the video and was distracted. 🙂 Either way, I agree and appreciate you taking the time to comment.
I'm glad I didn't invest in that pile of junk. Better off getting the snow blade or a walk behind snow blower for under half the price.
Actually, it’s been a solid performer over the past 10 years. I only started having problems when I installed the conversion kit. That’s when things started to get goofy. Might be a coincidence or it’s just getting old. Either way, I’ve used the heck out of it.
Does it have more power and mow faster?...I agree with you on the battery. Can you fit the 51R in the 590?
I haven’t noticed any difference in power but it does seem to run smoother. That could be because it’s new though. The battery tray looks to be the same size but the connections are different. The older x530 has heavier terminals and connectors compared to the newer x590. Could change the connectors but I’m not too worried about it. Maybe when it comes time to replace the battery.
I bought a X590 in April 2024 and it's a great mower. I replaced a 16 yr old X500. Power steering on the 590 is great.
I’m definitely a big fan of the power steering. I mowed a lawn for someone else over the summer as a favor using their tractor that did not have power steering. Made me realize how much I really liked it.
When I worked for my church, I had bought a John Deere X530 with a 47 inch snowblower. A couple of suggestions, the first being the two augurs, I would phase them 180° apart to divide the amount of snow coming to the center at one time. I had found in the John Deere parts catalog, Heavy Duty Snowblower Shoes (Left side Part Number AM128337, Right Side Part Number AM128336) The skid portion is a half inch piece of steel, these also are mounted on the inside of the blower housing. For the Snowblower Blade, I would install the mounting bolts with the carriage heads on the bottom side of the blade and the nuts on the top side. In this position, the nuts wouldn’t be ground down.
These are good tips. I looked up the shoes online and see there are actually multiple options from different manufacturers. I might get a set that’s a little wider to help travel over the gravel driveways. I’ll also check out my augers to see how they are spaced. Thanks again for the tips.
The shoes will also last longer because they’re thicker than the stamped metal shoes that come with blowers.
Its a John Deere! Garbage is more likely a better moniker
Over the years, I’ve had a few different brands and unfortunately have had issues with all of them. Things definitely aren’t built like they used to be. Everything now is made for the lowest cost possible which results in a cheap product.
I’ll be surprised if you don’t take the bottom gearbox seal out. You should’ve put some cool water on it
It was about 30° in my barn and the snowblower was previously outside in the snow so I’m thinking I’ll be OK. Hope so anyway. I’ve used it a couple times since and no issues as of yet.
Put snow on the shaft, heat the pulley Works
I’ve actually done similar at work using a halon fire extinguisher to cool the shaft and heat a drum. Much bigger parts than anything found on my tractor but same concept. The snow would’ve been a good idea.
I've given up onJD, I have an X540 and the 47" snowblower, the belt kept coming off. I have a sloping gravel driveway, would ice up at times. The snow blower is too heavy and too far in front of the rear wheel tractor, this tends to lift the rear wheels, so I would get stuck in the snow bank. I would end up very frustrated and have to ask the neighbor to plow me out. Snow banks would be left in inappropriate locations. I went back to my Ariens 624E 24" snowblower vintage 2007, to do the job. I plan on buying the ECO 24" Cordless snowblower for next winter 2025/26. The ECO 28" snowblower looks super for heavy snow. No oil, no gas, just recharge the batteries. That's my cup of tea.
I used to get stuck with my X530 which is almost the same as the X590. With 4 suitcase weights on the back and chains it really wasn’t an issue anymore. I agree, though, that snowblower upfront is crazy heavy. I did try it this year real quick without the chains and got stuck three times. Gave up and had to put the chains on while stuck which sucked. I might do a video on the tire chains and try to figure out a way to compare with and without. I’m getting a lot of comments from people on this and other videos regarding getting stuck and if the chains are a good option. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
Thanks. Glad is was an easy fix.
Compared to a full gearbox replacement, definitely an easier and cheaper fix. 👍
They're not painted green for no rea$on
Ha! Yes, that John Deere paint is definitely expensive. 😂
Please Give Me The Link To Purchase ❤ Sir
You got it! I’ll add the link to the comments.
JD product; that says it all! As a JD owner myself, I am very disillusioned with the quality of the unit. Very surprized they didn't put a Woodruff key in the shaft as well.
I agree. A simple key really would’ve made a big difference.
The last product I purchased of theirs didn't last 3 years of light duty chores around the house. Just garbage- disposable
Fortunately, I haven’t had anything like that happen. Of course, now that I say that I probably just jinxed myself…
you can wrap nylon fishing line on the threads and will act like a nyloc nut when tightened down
That is a crazy good idea! And not just for this application. I’ve never thought of that and I’m definitely going to give it a try. One of my goals with this channel is to show people stuff, but I’m amazed with the things like this I’m learning in return. Didn’t expect it. 🙂
The taper should be clean with no oil when assembled. Locktight should be used on the retaining bolt.
@ I agree. That’s what I was hoping to do but never did find my loctite. I’ll check the bolt again after a few weeks to make sure it’s still snug.
Len, I found that I can get a 'Quik-Clamp' (with removable/reversable head) through the side opening between the hitch and the mounting bracket and easily pull the idler pulley to the left. I'll try to get a photo or video to share. This is the first year with the 47-inch blower on my X590. I noticed you have chains on yours and your drive looks rather flat. A part of my driveway has about a 10-15% grade. Do you think chains will be necessary with HDAP tires and 168 lbs of weight?
I would love to see how you use the clamp to do that. The ratchet strap works, but it’s still not easy. And yes, I would definitely recommend chains. I started this winter without the chains on mine and got stuck three different times in the heavy snow. Had them, but was trying to get away without putting them on because that can also be a bit of a pain. The chains really do make a huge difference. And of course, the weight is a must have to counter balance the heavy snowblower up front.
Just a little fyi , you can take the adjusting nuts off and put a 1 inch spacer on it and replace the adjusting nuts. You will , be able to get all the lift you need.
That’s a good idea, I might try that. I think I saw some spacers at tractor supply that would work.
Nice video man! Just discovered your channel. Great troubleshooting, explainations and audio quality!
I’m still learning this video stuff and I’m actually trying to improve my audio. I center the mic on my chest, but I turn my head a lot because I’m hyper. So sometimes it’s loud and sometimes it’s not lol. I’ll get it figured out soon enough. Thanks for taking the time comment.
Jhon deere ingenier. That shaft and pulley should have a Woodruff key and keyway. I'm am not buying JD products anymore. The quality versus price is not worth it.
I agree 100% about the key. I was really surprised not to see that shaft and pulley with a keyway. I used to be strictly John Deere. Next time I buy a tractor I’m not saying I won’t buy a John Deere, but I will be comparing it with other brands.
I change my oil in the winter. I have less to do then than in the Spring or Fall. That's also when I take my blades to be sharpened. I find that that is when shops are not as busy and often looking for things to keep them busy.
My thinking exactly. Get it done and out of the way in the fall so when I’m trying to keep up with everything happening outside in the spring, I won’t have to worry about the oil blades, etc. thanks for taking the time to comment.
It seems like the green paint on the deck is harder ...tougher. the grass stains do not show and clean up easier
It’s funny, but I noticed that too. Wasn’t sure if it was just me. I guess time will tell if it holds up better than the yellow did.
