Sharyn's Shenanigans
Australia
Приєднався 2 лип 2021
Total newbies at towing, touring and four wheel driving we bought a Signature Hybrid van and a Prado to travel Australia. We are documenting our journey, particularly for our adult children, from learning to connect car and caravan, how to free camp, and a new hobby, watching Australia's wildlife.
Ideally travelling with my husband, John (and his jokes), after a year towing I now feel confident enough to travel solo with the car and van. So when John's at work, I'm out having the time of my life in the lesser known towns, National Parks and scrub.
I must be clear - THERE IS NO PLAN!

Is this Australia's Best River Float Camp? Gregory Downs, QLD
Переглядів 56612 годин тому
Entering Burketown we stop to have a look at their amazing bore. This bore has created a mini wetland with kangaroos and birds everywhere. Driving through we look for somewhere to stop for a Father's Day breakfast but can't find anything open. Moving on we come to Gregory Downs, a small town with three streets, a pub and what we think may be the best river floating in Australia. What is river f...
Savannah Way, Leichhardt Falls

We leave Normanton and literally follow the road. We come to a pass which just yells at us to stop, camp and explore - it is Leichhardt Falls. What an amazingly beautiful space! We choose to camp in the less popular space upstream from the Falls and are not disappointed. So many birds, predictors, roos and sadly crocs. The temperature is rising and we keep ourselves cools. This locations is bea...

Leaving Cobbold Gorge we turn left on the Savannah Way and stop to explore along the way. And why wouldn't we stop at a single chimney in the middle of nowhere. This single chimney is from past gold mining and next to one of the most interesting dams I've ever visited - there is wildlife everywhere. Continuing to drive along we spot at Croydon for lunch, cross the Gilbert River and have an enco...

Once proclaimed that these Lava Caves should be the 8th wonder of the world, we take a tour and learn exactly w...
Cape York Damage & Repairs in Mareeba

Finishing our trip to Cape York, we leave Weipa and head straight to Mareeba hoping to get a replacement windscreen. Shockingly, we discover the windscreen is not the only damage we sustained on the Peninsular Development Road (PDR) and we are very lucky that we get repairs done quickly by reputable dealers. Really, we get off lightly considering what had happened to the Iridium's suspension. O...

On the way into Weipa we see a budget camping ground with safe swimming in a beautiful dam. Staying here two days it's not only us who enjoy the water but an abundance of wildlife, mainly birds. After a few days we head into Weipa and stay at the Caravan Park. Here we ge...

Excitingly we visit the Northern most point of mainland Australia, "The Tip", and have it all to ourselves for nearly an hour. Love your stuff , we love our birds as well , you can see in our shorts , we have a beautiful male King Parrot we call Elvis but this afternoon four more identical ones turned up, pretty sure its to late for the Elvis festival and its in Parkes LOL
Excellent, love watching what you guys are up too.
Beautiful content Sharyn, love the wildlife photography & video footage. What an awesome campsite by the river, it must of been so refreshing and a thumbs up to john’s haircut - suits him, looks great. Finally, CONGRATULATIONS on 1k subscribers, so well deserved. Cheers Marg 😊
@@gibbosroadtripadventures thanks Marg. Would definitely go back to Gregory Downs.
@@sharyns.shenanigans it’s on my bucket list now. Hope it remains open.
Good morning guys another enjoyable episode . I really enjoyed all the shots of the beautiful wildlife and horses and the river that you were floating down looked fantastic so pristine cool and relaxing a great way to spend your day. Let’s hope people don’t muck up everyone by not keeping the place clean or doing the wrong thing with their grey water. But to be honest, I’m not that confident that the majority of people will do the right thing. When I was watching the shots of John floating down the river in front of you Sharyn, with his cap on he did remind me a bit of dickie knee from hey hey hey it’s Saturday.😂 Continued safe travels guys and congratulations on hitting 1000 subscribers 🎉🎉🎉. Well deserved and about time. 😊
Hi Darren, John just cracked up about your comment re dickie knee. Really put a smile on our faces, I'll never look at that footage the same again. I've just been collecting all the bird pics from Leichhardt Falls to put into a short clip, maybe I'll do the same for Gregory Downs. While making the videos is really a fun hobby, it's hard not to watch the numbers. While I don't think I'll be making much money, it will be fun to have a little monetary reward now and then. Hopefully it will be enough to buy a music subscription, I'm sick of the free music. Have a great week, Cheers Sharyn
Great photography and interesting comments. Keep the joke coming John...
Thanks Harry. Been watching your adventures in Canada. Looks like a great catch up with family. Sharyn
@@sharyns.shenanigans Thanks Sharyn, Yes it was great. Three daughters, two grandkids, a great sister and three of my best friends. Like I said planning for my nest adventure to the east coast. Dealing with a water leak at the moment and a toilet not flushing. Water leaks coming from the canvas togals that tie up the window flaps. Any advice?
@@harrybergeest6790 Sounds like you're planning an amazing trip. Maybe we'll meet you on the road sometime. Sorry Harry we haven't had to deal with any water through there. John thinks you can get spray stuff from Tent World that might help on canvas (sorry we don't have a name). I remember a friend waxing the zippers in her tent to stop water leaks. As for the toilet I'd contact Signature for advice. I've seen posts on the Signature FB page re people changing fuses for the toilet so maybe search there. Not much help I'm sorry but we just haven't had any of those issues with our Iridium. Any issues or breakages have come from wear and tear on the rough roads we've dragged the Iridium through like the PDR. Definitely send an email to Signature, I'm sure they'll get back to you, Sharyn @signaturecampertrailers #signaturecampertrailers
Nice, very picturesque with lots of wild life.
Amazing place, totally recommend visiting when you're on this side of the country.
Hi Sharyn, It's been a while since I followed you. Hi hope everything is going well. Its good to see you travels again. We are planning on doing the Savannah Way from west to east as we have relatives in Mossman. It's just in the planning stage so very interested on your travels
Hi Harry, been watching your travels on Insta, looks like you've been having a great time. Wish we had more time to do the Savannah Way but only managed a small section. Hope we meet on the road sometime. Cheers Sharyn
Another great video
Thank you so much, Leichhardt Falls is truely a lovely place to camp. Cheers Sharyn
Raining and on the cool side today.
Total opposite here today, 35 degree, humid and at 7.30pm still uncomfortable.
We are neighbours 😁 yassites
There you go, not very far down the road when we are home. Currently visiting family in northern NSW coast. I believe it has been raining down south?
Great episode guys, you always show us something special and your photography is excellent and really helps to tell the story of each location. I like John’s joke you never really know what he is going to say 🤣 You are so close to reaching 1000 subscribers, to be honest I can’t believe, that you have not already reached that milestone your content is great. Take care and continued safe travels.
Thanks for your positive feedback. To be honest I never know when John's going to say a joke or what he is going to say. Sometimes it takes me a bit to realise that it is a joke. John keeps telling me to wear a bikini and then I'll make 1,000 subscribers - there is no way that is going to happen, lol. Cheers Sharyn
Oh wow what a spot!!!!. Hope things have settled a bit for you both. I would love to sit with a coffee to chat with you about your stunning photography
It was a great spot. I hope we get to go back earlier in the season one year and swim in the "pools" when they have more water in them. I always love a good chat, perhaps we'll meet travelling sometime. Cheers Sharyn
Great video once again, how awesome to see the Morning Glory cloud. Love the look of Leichhardt Falls, hope we can visit one day. Funny joke John, made me laugh. Cheers Marg
Thanks Marg. Looking forward to catching up with you guys too. Cheers Sharyn
Loving the content, and the jokes are getting better :)
Thanks so much. John is very serious about the jokes. Cheers Sharyn
Hi Sharyn and John, thank you for another enjoyable and interesting episode of your amazing adventures. Take care and John l hope you get a good pair of thongs along your trip somewhere 😀🩴🩴
Thanks Darren, we are having a great time and love the freedom of not knowing where we are going next. I'm planning to order John a new pair of Archies when we have a delivery address. Obviously I don't have much faith in John's fixi-it ability (not sure it ever works with any pair of thongs). Have a great week, Sharyn
That big bird that crossed the road is an Australian Bustard. Spectacular birds! We saw them on our recent trip up in FNQ on our way to Mount Carbine (can be seen in our video "Birds of the Dry Tropics"). You were right on the Sarus Crane photo but you also saw Brolgas. You can tell the difference as the red on the Sarus Cranes heads goes further down their neck. Brolgas just have the red on the top part of the head. Enjoy your travels & love those birds! 😀 ~ K
Thanks so much for the heads up. I'll need to watch your video when we have regular coverage. Safe travels, Sharyn
@@sharyns.shenanigans no worries! 😀 It was just something I thought you'd like to know 😊
@@naturephotographychallenge looking forward to watching it.
i believe that bird is a bustard
Thanks so much for the heads up. Are they unusual to spot like the campers at Normanton told us? It certainly didn't care that we were in the car and could have run it over, just took its time crossing the road. Sharyn
@@sharyns.shenanigans i think they were also referred to as the plains turkey - they were considered a very good food source - they're a pretty large bird - once found all over - now mostly in the north and not that common
@@pabrizzer That fits perfectly with what we saw - it did kind of strut like a turkey and would have lots of meat on it. Thanks
Hi Sharyn & John, Could be worth contacting Archies, we got a replacement pair. Take a photo of the broken thong & email it to them. Love the kookaburra - beautiful !🩵 Thanks for uploading another video on your travels, feels like we are watching old friends now. Cheers Marg & Steve 😊
Hi guys, can't really complain about the Archies. They are about two years old and John wears them everywhere. The only complaint is you can't buy them in remote areas (not really a valid complaint). Funnily enough, we are visiting family at the moment and the local Archie retailers is out of size 13, so the saga continues! Look forward to catching up one day and trying your cooking. Cheers Sharyn
@@sharyns.shenanigans hey Sharyn, you could order some online to be delivered to a Post Office ahead of where you are travelling. While our son was doing the lap, we’d send things to them via Post Offices and Archies were pretty quick. PS I think next year might be the year to meet up. 😊
Oh nooo. Broken thong and broken sleep. Looks like you were blessed with Bird sightings though to make up for it.
Yes, we were lucky enough to see so many birds. I'd love to go back to that area and visit the wetlands. Another location to put on my list to revisit. Cheers Sharyn
I gave this a thumbs up but laRva! You saw some great wildlife.
Bugger, totally missed that. I'll change it on the Cover and in the Comments. Thanks so much for the heads up, Sharyn
@@sharyns.shenanigans A silly pedantic point, sorry. I have done this trip myself but I did not see anywhere near as much as you did.
@@peterg1978 no truely, thanks for the heads up. I had goggled larva and the page came up but on reflection, they probably put both spellings in their search criteria. When on the official page it changes. I look forward to going back one day and doing some 4wd tracks.

Thanks so much. Cheers Sharyn
So glad you showed us these two great places both look amazing
@@Lainiefj they are amazing. I hope to visit again and look around the area further next season.
Wow how cool are those Lava Tubes they are really impressive. I would like to see them. The variety of different locations in today’s episode have been great to see, floating down the gorge was a real highlight. The glass bridge gave a unique perspective being able to look directly below. Have you given yourself a set time for your travels around Australia or are you just taking as long as you want or need. l appreciate that the weather, seasons and the need to prebook are a factor. I like the idea you can take as long as you want. Due to work commitments my travels like most people have had set time limits. I am looking forward to travelling without as many time limits and the freedom of taking as much as possible as long as I want. Continued safe travels 😀
Totally agree with you, the Larva Caves are amazing. John has taken four months long service leave at the moment. He is close to retirement and this is our test to see if we are happy living in a tight space together travelling. So far, so good. Next year we hope to do the west of Australia, taking our time like we are doing at the moment. Think all our planning will pay off and we'll be able to do it. Thanks for watching, Sharyn
As always a really enjoyable and interesting episode. I look forward to seeing what you both have been up to each week. Continued safe travels and John your Sharks played well and had a good year. The Panthers are a very strong team and very hard to beat. I will be supporting the Panthers over the Storm l still have not forgotten or given them for there massive years of cheating the salary cap. Take care and keep on enjoying each day. 😀
More stunning locations shared, thank you. Surely a water python would be no match for a ninja? 🐍🥷🤣When is the joke book coming out?
haha, you just made me laugh. Encouraging John and his jokes - you are a brave man!
that was a great look around the place . We might have to check it out for some kayak camping away from the crowds and speed boats
@@BushKayakersCampingAustralia it is a lovely place, only very busy on long weekends. I plan to return and paddle around in the future. Sharyn
What an adventure seeing the foot prints, devestated you lost your go pro batteries. We were debating if we risk going to the tip with the old ambulance as its two wheel drive. I think you answered our question if its worth the risk. What a spendy section of your trip
Even though we had damage, I am still glad we went to Cape York and had all the experiences. Perhaps next time we would go earlier in the season so the road wasn't as bad as we experienced (just guessing). Plenty of people were paying day trips and flying to the Tip from Cooktown and Cairns. I hope to do a "chat" with John in a few weeks about what we learned and what we'd do differently next time. Sharyn
So nice to see you posting we really enjoy your stuff Cheers Jonno and Jez
Thanks so much for your support. I tried editing in the car as we drove from Adelaide to Queensland border in two and a half days but it just wasn't possible. Hopefully, next week will be easier. Cheers Sharyn
As usual we come for the scenery & wildlife...and stay for the joke! The Merlin app is good for bird identification - not so great with sound here (US based) but works well from photos - we've had success with screenshots from a video too. Thanks for another great video, looking forward to the next one. Cheers, John & Liz
Thanks for the heads up about the app John & Liz. I'm finding it so busy editing while being on the road, it might take me a few weeks before getting the app. I think I definitely need one. Hope you have a great week and thanks for watching and supporting with your comment. Cheers Sharyn
Beautiful photography once again Sharyn and I would have joined you floating in that dam. Your content is so good, I hope UA-cam share your channel to the world. This area is so foreign to me, so I appreciate you taking us with you. Cheers Marg
Thank you so much Marg and especially for your support. I was talking about stopping with the videos before you contacted me. I really enjoy putting them together but find it hard when I meet someone who has put up four videos and has over a thousand subscribers. It had gotten in my head but your comments have set me straight. Thank you once again. Sharyn
Another really good episode Sharyn and John, you always show us a different and interesting view of every location you go to. I am glad you kept your distance from those big Lizards 😮 I will be supporting Panthers and Sharks to win the GF . I am not a fan of either the Storm or Manly. I would be happy to see the Sharks or the Panthers win. I was like John last night worried that the Cowboys were coming back to get the win. I am happy that the Sharks held on to win.
You seem to have similar views of teams to John. He would like to see Sharks win obviously but otherwise anyone except Storm. I think he thinks Panthers have won too many lately and it would be good for another team to have a shot (eg, Sharkys). Thanks for watching, and your continued support, currently sitting outside of Port Augusta tonight busily editing the next vid. Cheers Sharyn
I am sure John is happy good win by the Sharks tonight
Very happy but said they gave him heart failure being up by 24-0 and then letting Cowboy score 18 points. Who are you going to follow through the finals now your team is "resting"?
Hi Sharyn love your travelogues, I think the green Multi coloured birds at York Downs waterholes are Rainbow bee eaters
Oh, thank you. I think they are Rainbow bee eaters too, just wasn't sure with our old bird book. Thank you so much for identifying. Cheers Sharyn
As per usual great stuff, have a question as a novice , how often are you using your GO PRO , I struggle with mine and the zoom feature and was thinking of just using my Nikon Safe travels Jonno and Jez
Hi Jonno, I use my old Go Pro all the time for regular recording, ie talking with John and about camp, but do have a Nikon that I use for those nature recordings and bird sightings. Sadly the Nikon doesn't stay still so sometimes it doesn't work. Hoping one day I can upgrade but at the moment I'm below the subscription for payment and doing everything on a budget.
