    In theory you shouldn't pay for a bullpen, but in a big market like Chicago you need proven guys. Trades would be better or shorter term guys, which allows Brown, Hodge others to develop underneath to take the 8th and 9th by end of year. I cant find a season when the cubs were competitive when prospects were 8th/9th inning guys. Its different with the crowds, media, etc. A lot of good pitchers with great stuff wilt under the Chicago spotlight. Carlos Marmol was a failed SP that turned into a great late inning RP. Hector Rondon did the job in 2015 but that was a unique year, where they were .500 until July. The cubs will NOT have a dominant offense going into opening day next year, so they have to create an edge with SP and late inning RPs to sequence out games. There are a lot of ways to skin a good-great team, so Jed will have to adjust strategy or have to find a new job.

    Yes, extend Steele to age 35 with a good hometown deal, not a top deal. Like the Braves locking their young talents. He doesn’t have a lot of mileage in MLB. So he will be relatively under used at the same age.

    39:44 if these two carrying water for Ricketts and Jed. The Cubs are a top 4 revenue team, if you believe Forbes it is top 3. They charge the fans Yankees/Red Sox/Dodger prices, and these two act as though the fans are wrong to expect them to spend in a similar fashion. They don't. AJ Preller has had the Padres in the playoffs for three of the past five years. Jed hasn't. You don't assess the job of a baseball exec on whether they get some inheritor owner pockets more money than his daddy gave him. They run a baseball team. One exec has had his team in the mix in October. The other has not. That is how professional sports are judged.

    • @sni6941
      @sni6941 3 дні тому

      Yeah if you ONLY judge the Cubs for the last three years. They are terrible organization. Padres after they signed Machado and has Tatis, means it is their window. If Bryant and Baez did not fall off a cliff, Cubs will be in playoff for sure. Situations are different, I would not like what AJ did over the years if I am Padres fan. With that payroll and farm, they should be a lot better than what they were.

    • @benoitwaffle5439

      @@sni6941 The Padres had a CBT tax 40-man of $231 million. The Cubs had one of $237 million. What is this window to win-now? A window isn't created when an exec decides he can't fail and tells the media "it is time." Hoyer has been in a job with one of the highest revenue teams in baseball for a long time. Just because the Cubs have the capacity to far outspend the Padres, it doesn't mean they have actually spent differently. The Cubs haven't made the playoffs when they have the greatest relative resource advantage any team has over its division rivals in the league. Preller has three other teams in his division spending more than the Cardinals and far more than the other three in the NL Central. It is indefensible for someone to think Hoyer has operated a better franchise than Preller. If you don't want to judge them on wins and losses, then when has Hoyer maneuvered the way Preller did to turn Soto into Cease and Michael King while elevating Jackson Merrill to get comparable bat in the lineup from June on? Has he ever come close to that?

    Trade for Alcantara and sign Bieber to create the potentially best rotation in the MLB. Trade for Langeliers to produce more runs from the catcher position from the A's. Trade for Vladdy to put a legit star in the lineup. This will take this team over the top to beat the Brew Crew.

Several players underperformed this year. Jes is so calm because he knows this and a few tweaks here and there will get the job done. • @Gnar_Dogg
    @Gnar_Dogg 17 днів тому

    Hoyer made it clear this team would need to overperform this season to reach the postseason with some of his comments early on. An it's looking like 2025 will be another year of "well if Seiya has a .900+ OPS and hits 30 HRs, if Imanaga, Steele and Taillon to repeat or improve, if PCA can manage close to an .800 OPS all year etc etc". Relying on the best outcome for every single player on the roster in order to win 85+ games is an absolutely terrible strategy. While sure it may be a valid point that you need indeed need players to outperform projections to have good years my point is that it seems he is heavily relying on good but not great players to basically have career years in order to compete. If they simply added 1 or 2 great or elite players then it would be much easier to compete because even in a down year an elite player will still have the same or better year than someone like Ian Happ has in a career year.

    People have to come to terms that "sustainable success" is a marketing ploy to explain away spending less. Farhan Zaidi tried to sell that nonsense in San Francisco. Chaim Bloom did it in Boston. The only difference is that the fans and media in those cities didn't carry their water when all they built was mediocrity, and those two actually had a playoff appearance in their tenures. The Cubs are not a small market. They do not charge small market prices or generate small market tv money. Hold Hoyer to a big city standard! Him announcing that the Cubs aren't ready to be great does not mean he shouldn't be assessed for the job he is doing.

    Well you have to look at the landscape we are in now a days. Most of the teams are in contention or on the upswing due to the expanded playoffs and will never trade away good players. We also have richer owners to battle like Cohen and Rubenstein. You all know Tom ain't out spending them so, we can only trade for game changers now and that costs a lot of player capital. We should only try for guys like Vladdy if he's willing to sign an extension with us but, there's more of a chance that happens then Tom out spending Cohen and Rubenstein. I'd also love for them to take a chance at Sandy Alcantara since we need a clear cut ace and also trade for Jesús Tinoco to bringing in more guys with stuff to the bullpen. I think Jed needs to listen to those that have had winning seasons on the team and add. We need to win at least 95 games. Listen to counsell

    What team going to be/still in the hunt for the postseason doesn't have at least 1 superstar type of player or someone at least playing like one? Philly - Schwarber, Harper, Turner, Wheeler Dodgers- Freeman, Betts, Ohtani Padres - Bogarts, Machado, Tatis, Cease, Darvish, Merrill AZ - Marte, Walker, Carroll Mets - Lindor, Alonso, Vientos Braves - Ozuna, Olson, Sale Brewers - Adames, Contreras, Chourio, That's just the NL can apply the same pattern to the AL teams as well. All of these players are producing superstar like numbers either throughout the entire season or started surging in the 2nd half.

    I hope they make more moves. I don’t trust the leaders entrusted in making moves, based on their philosophy and performance. How to reconcile.

    When is Tom Ricketts getting on board? It’s hard to tell if the problem is Tom or Jed buts it’s one or the other. Worst case, it’s both. We’ll be watching. Just missing the playoffs is getting old.

    There's a handful of players that have been doing their jobs for the most part these past 2 years. 2 most obvious hitters are Happ & Seiya. Starting Pitching wise its Steele & Assad. Relief Pitching there is absolutely nobody. This team needs to bring in more consistent players that produce in clutch moments. A.K.A a superstar. But they do have some good pieces in that regard that can be relied upon to produce. Shota/Busch/PCA only have this year to back them up but look VERY promising. Parades/Hoerner/Swanson/Amaya/Taillon/Bellinger/Wicks/Brown all have something to prove or reinforce next year.

      Jed needs to go get an Eovaldi/Martinez/Manea/Severino teir SP AND a big bat like Santander at a minimum. The bullpen just needs the 1 right guy at the back end, Jansen/Holmes/Finnegan etc. Jed can pick up or call up reinforcements as the season goes on, he's actually better at that than picking free agents.

      @@mr.bohner6819With the bullpen: Correct. Jed would be better to build the bullpen by finding projects than signing veteran arms. Boxberger, Fulmer, and Neris were the right signings at the time but we're terrible. The mid season projects are what made the bullpen good. The pitcher teir you're talking about is Tallion. They have that. Get Fried or Burnes. There's not a big bat available that fits on this team right now though. Hopefully it's Caissie!

      @@michaelthiel3161 ehh Fried & Burnes will require 5+ years & a very high AAV. I dont see Jed going after them. Maybe he does a trade for Logan Gilbert or one of the Mariners studs but he aint signing either of those 2. But they'll also need to trade for the bat they need too cuz like you said the Free Agent market doesnt have a big bat that fits well on this team. Or if they go the Catcher route it'll take a trade too.. Jed has a VERY TRICKY offseason ahead of him. He has to improve the Rotation depth & lineup 7 men deep while getting the bullpen more leverage production

      Craig’s message wasn’t that the current players are the problem. Although there was a lot of issues, there was also a talent gap in the bullpen from the start. His message is the organization process. That’s front office and ownership alignment with coaching and players. Jed saying he needs to get better is getting old. What does Tom say, does he have to do better?

      Getting a superstar doesn’t mean success in baseball. Large contracts usually don’t work out too well in the first place. Cubs need to develop players better and get guys that are hungry to win

    The Brewers essentially play with 3 center fielders and 3 shortstops every game so they are really athletic and the defense has been really good. They killed it in trades for Adames, Yelich, and Contrares, Burnes deal got them 5 years of control of Ortiz and Hall. Brewers find above average guys that have been Dfa'd- Myers, Koenig and others. And developed some- Chourio, Turang, Peralta and more so they find talent all over pretty well. The pitching lab has been ridiculous, and pitching coach Chris Hook is the best in the business imo.

      And the most important thing that can't be measured in any stat category is the clubhouse culture. The team rallies around Adames the most, he has been the clubhouse MVP and on the field. He's going to be a huge loss next year. Murphy has these guys cooking, and the Cubs play like the boring and lame manager that they have, seen it all to many times from Counsel, he has no fire.

  • @mr.bohner6819
    @mr.bohner6819 29 днів тому

    Jed Hoyer getting beat this bad by the team they set out to beat this season is a drastic screw up & fire worthy... He's lost the division by 10+ games, (specific goal set by Tom Rickettes himself) not getting into the WC, going over the tax limit of 237 million when they clearly didn't want to & in a lost season, didn't build a good bullpen over offseason for the 2nd straight year & cost us a playoff spot because of it for the 2nd straight year.

    So basically what you said in the first half, summed up, is Tom doesn't spend enough, despite huge profits, so it's not Jed's fault. Gotcha. Solution? SELL THE TEAM RICKETTS!
